WDW-labor day week-NJ families

We are planning a trip the last week of August and planned to stay until 9/8 or 9/9. We live in Bergen County, NJ. My children's 2015-2016 just came out and they go back the Thursday BEFORE labor day. This has never happened. This year they went back the Thursday after labor day. I know labor day is late but I am so surprised at this. We already bought our plane tickets down for 8/26 but now I am going to plan on returning on labor day 9/7 and they will have to miss the first (1/2 day) and 2nd day of school. Anyone else's calendar's changed due to a late labor day?

We are in Ocean County. We've gone back before Labor Day the past few years. Always after the 1st, but if they can get in 2-3 days before the holiday, they will. Especially with all the days we've had off the past few years.

We always go back the wednesday after labor day. So this year that is Sept. 9.

Labor day is a little late, but thats ok.

We will also be heading down on 8/26

and staying until 9/2. Plane tickets bought, Its official.

I have 2 children in private elementary school

I pray they start on the 9th, but if they don't its ok

And it is ok for you too. Its only the first 1 1/2 days. Don't let it ruin your trip. I know its hard, but in the big picture, it won't really matter

I am in PA and our districts started the going back before Labor day a few years ago.It totally stinks ( upside is we get out end of May/beginning of June)..That said, we have missed the first days of school before and it was no big deal..It will likely happen to a lot of families because of the change

I'm in south Jersey and our board won't tell us when the first day is until the middle of April, so we're scheduled for 8/22-29 and aren't changing anything. It would be nice to add a few days, and we're driving so we definitely could, but I'm not sure we will.

I'm in NY, near the NJ border and we always go back after Labor Day as well. Now I am curious as to what will be happening for us also!

Chicago Public Schools did this to us in 2013 -- changed our start date to before Labor Day (and they changed it back the following year because they had such a low attendance rate the first week and many parents complained). We already had a vacation scheduled and we took it as planned. We called each of our 4 kids' schools and let them know that the kids would be out and that the vacation was planned long before CPS changed the schedule. The absences weren't even recorded because the kids were not considered "present" until the first day they actually attended class.

I'm in New Jersey too and I was wondering about what they were going to do with that late Labor Day. Wow, so they are going back the week before, at least in your town. Ugh, I hate that so much! Summer is so precious up here, no early starts lol!

We always start school the day after Labor Day, but since it is so late this year, I am wondering if we will go back early as well.

We were going to plan a long weekend away on Labor day weekend, leaving on Thurs or Fri before Labor Day, but I have been holding off booking anything until the school calendar comes out. I don't want them missing school for vacation, I know it's just the first day or two, but I think those days are important. The kids and teacher get to know each other. I feel like if they miss it, it's kind of like the kid that missed the birthday party and all the kids talk about it on Monday and they are left out. Silly, I know, but it's how I feel. Work wise they won't miss much, just more social wise I guess.

Since you already booked it, I wouldn't sweat it, what's done is done. I know some school districts are strict about missing school for vaca, but in your case I think they would be fine with it since you didn't know when you purchased the tickets.

Oh boy I hope we don't go back prior to Labor Day we are in a catholic school that normaly follows woodbridge. Will try to find out

I agree with this I'm in NY, about 50 minutes from Mahwah. I've been wondering if we're going back before Labor Day also as we'd love to go down the 1st week in Sept. Oldest DS is in 7th grade so I know it's been after Labor Day for the past 8 years and teacher friends are telling me they can't remember ever going back before LD, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed! Calendar generally comes out in March.

Close friend of mine in Mahwah said she doesn't know her kids go back.

We aren't sure when we go back but we are going August 25 or so and coming home sept 8. Talked to the office at the school and they are hoping to start after Labor Day. My daughter is going to be a junior and she said she doesn't care about missing. This is big cause she is on varsity field hockey. We actually had to let her fly down in November cause of playoffs.

I clicked on this thread because a million years ago,, when I went to school, I lived in the Northeast and returning to school the day after Labor Day was a rule. It never wavered.

Then I moved to the Southeast and was extremely surprised to find out kids down here go back to school in August. And early August! And they get out before Memorial Day.

Very interesting to see the different school calendars and the affects on families and plans.

If the towns are really doing this in NJ, they need to announce this stuff soon! People are very protective of their summers around here including Labor Day.
