WDW Jan 2011: Who else is doing their first Full then?

Just over 9 weeks to go. I had a bad week last week and missed most of my runs (extra hours at work required and sick family at home). This week is much better and I'm back on track.

I think realizing that the weeks to the race is now in the single digits helped me get focussed again.

Oh Lily, thanks for resurrecting this thread. My training is coming along pretty well. Tomorrow I have my first “first” as I have a 14 miler scheduled. I have to figure out where to go since none of my previous training runs have ever been this long. Guess I’ll just double back or something.

I’m having some ITB issues but nothing that is going to stop me. Actually, nothing short of losing a limb is going to stop me. Even then, if it’s an arm I can keep running. :lmao: I am determined to do this. Can you tell?? LOL!

I did the MCM10K last weekend and took 4 minutes off last year’s time, which made me very happy. I guess I’m doing OK. I’m not going to win the marathon in January but I’ll get the same medal. Yes I will. If I have to crawl across that finish line, darn it! :thumbsup2

HI
this is the first time in years that i've been on the boards..

2011 will be my second marathon and dh's first. training has been difficult in terms of finding the time..but we are on track for a 14 miler this weekend..we aren't looking for time, just to have a good time:). finishing is the goal since training hasnt been perfect.:dance3:

This is a great thread. Just wanted to offer a few words of encouragement. I was over weight and wasn't a runner when I started this so there is hope for all of you.

The Disney marathon was also my first marathon. Actually it was my first race longer than the Tower of Terror. When I signed up all I had ever run was a few 5K's.

There were times when I wondered if I'd get there. When you are only running 5 miles at a time, 26 is pretty intimidating. But you know, adding a mile a week made it a little easier. I can still remember when I was so excited that I actually ran 12 miles. I was pumped! Seriously, I can still remember that moment like yesterday. I remember the time leading up to it, the run, afterward, etc. We all have a special moment like this that we remember and it isn't always the big moments. For some reason that runs still sticks out.

You guys are probably getting into the 16 mile range or even a bit longer now. Just take it a week at a time. Try not to miss any runs and you'll be OK. I too had IT band issues, Took a lot of over the counter anti-inflammatory (Ibuprofen) in training. I did purchase an IT strap and wore it for the last half of the marathon. Saved my race.

Anyway, good luck. I won't be there this year for the first time in a while. My wife refuses to believe it. She has asked me probably 4 times. "Are you sure you are not running Disney?" After the unbearable run last year, brrrrr. Three days of bone chilling cold. But it's time to move on for awhile.

I want to warn you though you don't know what you are getting into. That marathon led to many other marathons. When I finished I swore I would never do another and wondered why I signed up in the first place. Well the next day I signed up for my first Goofy! Couple of Goofy's later I am doing an half Ironman this weekend and have now signed up for a full Ironman for next year.

Don't say I didn't warn you :)

Good luck and above all, have fun!
Duane

I really don't have much to add, but what Duane says here is very true. He and I have the same story except I'm not doing any Ironman's! :lmao:

On those long runs my advice is to try and break them down into smaller distances if you are struggling with the whole distance.

You can do it. Don't let anyone tell you any different. INCLUDING YOURSELF! :thumbsup2

Breaking down the marathon into smaller distances really helps too. You've got your first 10 miles, your second 10 miles, and then a 10-K (or 2 5-Ks if you prefer). Or you can do what many people do and dedicate each mile to something or someone important to you - mile 1 marker (good bye 30 extra pounds), mile 2 marker (kid #1), etc.

Duane,
Thanks so much for the boost. I've been running for a lot of years and done 3 half marathons, but this full still scares me to death. I have a 15 miler scheduled for Monday and it will be the longest I've ever run. I'm going to take your advice and just take it week by week and be sure to get my runs in. I really appreciate the pep talk. Though I really don't think I will ever be doing Ironmans:laughing:

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to let everyone know that this is my first marathon!! My dad's running it with me and it's his first, as well.

We both did the Minnie Marathon 15k back in 2008 and the Princess 1/2 in March, but quite honestly, didn't really train like we should have. But for this race we are both training our butts off....literally! :rotfl:

Anyways, can't wait to race with all of you!!

Ok, Duane - now you are really scaring me!

I have already been thinking - what am I going to do to get that awesome feeling of finishing your first 15 miles, 16 miles, marathon... and I am only in training for my first full!

I blame Judy! :rotfl:

Oh sure, go ahead, blame me. :rolleyes1 I can't think that far ahead. I'm taking things one hour at a time right now. If I don't, I get overwhelmed by the fact that tomorrow I have to do SIXTEEN MILES!!! :scared1: :faint: I've become very good at looking at things in very tiny increments. :thumbsup2

Good luck to all of you! It's exciting to see so many folks doing the full for the first time. Sometimes I miss the thrill of reaching a new distance in the training plan. I'm just going to enjoy it vicariously...no more fulls for me!

We will all definitely be out there cheering you on during the race!

I presume it's because Professor Mel's ankles have convinced her to back off and do more enjoyable distances. Am I right?

Sounds like everyone is doing great with their training. Good job guys!

I'm doing my first full as well (actually going Goofy). I feel pretty prepared. I've already done a 20 miler and have a 22 next Saturday. Since I'm doing the Goofy Challenge, I'm even doing a 24 miler 3 weeks before the races and I've incorporated a lot of back to back runs. The only thing I'm nervous about is the fact that I've never run in races this big. Only a little local half. So, the crowds are intimidating. But, thanks to my qualifying time, I'll at least start up front in the half. I will be taking my full pretty easy.

So, good luck to everyone. It's impressive how many people are running their first! :thumbsup2

No matter where you start, it's going to be crowded. I was in the first few corrals for both the half and the full last time, and there were still lots of people to get stuck behind, weave around, and avoid. The full was a bit better than the half because of the dual courses, but it didn't really thin out until we were done going around Epcot and halfway to Magic Kingdom. And even if you're up front for the half, I highly recommend taking that easy too. It makes recovering for Sunday that much easier. :)

Hi everyone! I don't think I've posted on this thread much, but I just wanted to pop in and say I just ran 16 miles:banana::banana::banana: It's the longest I've ever done and it went well. Obviously super tired, but it gives me confidence that I really can do this thing! Just wanted to tell people that will understand my excitement:goodvibes
