I think it all depends on what you are using as a comparison. We're a family of 5 (although our youngest won't be 3 until May). Many vacation destinations won't allow us to stay in one room. Either we need to upgrade to suites or get 2 rooms. I've priced other vacation destinations and found them to be FAR more expensive than Disney. That doesn't make Disney affordable for everyone but it is more affordable than some other popular vacation spots (Atlantis, Beaches, etc.). And airfare to these other destinations is often 2-3 times what it would cost us to fly to Disney.

It was our third child that had us start looking into camping instead of hotels. The cost for two rooms plus the airfare was starting to get beyond our reach. However, our travel trailer is larger than many hotel rooms, is packed and ready to go anytime we want, and we can stay in a state park campground for anywhere between $14 and $30 per night.
Stayed in Yellowstone National Park for $17 per night in 2006, and got a week in Fort Wilderness for $46 per night with our trailer in 2008. The cost for gas to tow the trailer to WDW is close to or a little cheaper than air fare and we get to see a lot of the country on the way down and back.
