WDW in a straight cast

So my MIL fell and broke her kneecap this morning, surgery this afternoon, then leg in a straight cast for the foreseeable future. WDW/cruise trip starts in 11 days. Anyone ever done Disney (or have a family member do Disney) in a straight cast? Or flown 6 hours with one?

I imagine we'd get her a scooter, but not sure there'd be enough room for her leg. And a lot of rides (most?) would be out. But she could still do dinners, parades, fireworks, etc. She and FIL are currently debating whether to come. Thoughts appreciated!

Sorry to hear that! Thankfully Disney is generally very flexible with these kind of issues. Because of her knee injury, she may qualify for a special access card to ride certain rides and attractions, I highly recommend that you stop by Guest Relations as soon as you enter your first park to see if she qualifies for this card and they can also help you determine which attractions she can/cannot ride. This guide may be helpful, hope this helps:

With the surgery, I would be the most concerned about the flight.

At Disney with the scooter (and you should check out the Disabilities board for suggested companies to rent from offsite...they might have suggestions for the cast/scooter combo) they'll work with you and help figure out what she can do.

But the long flight is where she needs to start with the decision-making.

Hope she heals thoroughly and as gently as possible.

it would be very doughtfull that she will qualify for the disability card ( DAS) they most likely will tell her to use a mobility device. but I do agree to stop by guest relation and she what rides they think she can do.

Thank you for your input! The doctor has just told her not to go, so I guess that settles it. What a bummer, to say the least.

Is it a doctors order or doctors recommendation? ;) If it is just a recommendation then I say still go for it! As long as she has an electric scooter then she should be able to get around just fine as many guests do on those scooters. As I stated previously, Disney is very accommodating with these kind of issues as far as making the most attractions as accessible as possible and providing a variety of programs such as DAS and pamphlets with recommendations on how to get around easier, like I said just make sure you stop by Guest Relations at each park. I really hope everything works out for you and your family!

The OP dose not need a DAS card if it was the old GAC then yes they would this is taken form Disney website

Does a Guest whose disability is based on the necessity to use a wheelchair or scooter need DAS?

A Guest whose disability is based on the necessity to use a wheelchair or scooter does not need a DAS. Depending on the attraction, Guests utilizing a wheelchair or scooter will either wait in the standard queue or receive a return time at the attraction comparable to the current wait time. For some attractions at Walt Disney World Resort, these Guests will go directly to an alternate entrance. Guests with additional needs should discuss them with Guest Relations.

The OP wife would need a scooter to get around and would not get a DAS or need one since her needs are meet with a scooter.

OP I am sorry that you are not able to go I think the DR is right and staying home is the best things to do flying and being at disney right after surgery dose not sound like fun at all and then being on pain meds I think ( and I can not imagine how hard this id for you) but staying home at letting your MIL rest and recover is the best thing for her I hope that you will get another chance soon to visit maybe when things open up in a few more months at EPCOT

Too bad. My last knee surgery I was told no flights for 6 weeks. The problem is that during surgery the open knee absorbs air and when you reach altitude in the plane the knee can get "the bends" as all the air exits the tissue in the knee.

I also don't see how she could be comfortable on a plane with the leg straight out. There may not even be enough room in the seat area for a straight leg.

That's so sad and sounds very painful. I wish her a speedy recovery.

I wouldnt attempt a trip with a straight cast. Your mother in law is better off at home unfortunately. Its too bad, its better to be safe than sorry. I'd definitely listen to the doctor on this one.

Thank you for your kind words! We are still going on the trip, just without MIL (we live 2000 miles away, so it's not like we're abandoning her!). She is devastated of course, but we go often, so there will be other trips.

I hope she heals quickly and can get back with you soon.
