WDW in a plaster cast

DD has broken her wrist - she had a plaster cast fitted today. As she has broken it in the past, when they x-rayed it they said it didnt heal as it should last time and a bone is out of place so she has to go back in 10 days to have it looked at again. My concern is if at that point they have to reset it then we go away 5 weeks tomorrow to Florida.

How long do they keep casts on these days - is it likely to be removed before we go - if not and you have been over there with a cast, how did you get on? Where there any rides you couldnt do? - I presume the pool and waterpark would be out but what about coasters and stuff? - we are going to Universal and Seaworld as well.

sorry to hear your DD has broken her wrist. I am not able to answer most your questions but more to send hugs for a quick recovery. Last time I broke mine it was 6 weeks but I'm an adult so maybe its faster for kids.

Check with the hospital or your GP.

I am sure the thought of visiting mickey will make it all feel better

Hi pigby, I'm becoming an expert on the matter as I broke both wrists last week and we fly out on the 5th.

In some respects surgery to manipulate and plate the bones has better recovery time than a scaphoid fracture ( I have both ) as I had surgery on one wrist on Wednesday and it's just in bandages and already feels a lot better. The scaphoid fracture is between 6 and 12 weeks plus recovery as it's a slow healing bone so I'm going to be travelling with one cast below the elbow.

Virgin were fine and just made a note. I needed to pay an additional insurance premium for what is now a pre-existing condition to have the arms covered. This was an extra £34 with Columbus Direct.

Overall my attitude is I'd rather be there with a broken arm than home with a broken arm.

Apparently US and Seaworld are more strict than Disney about ride restrictions with casts, that's anecdotal from a work colleague and possibly more relevant for a leg cast.

We just got back, and my son went with a cast on one arm. We did get the waterproof version, so I would definitely ask for that if it gets reset. It stopped him from doing absolutely nothing. At Universal studios, they did make him sit on a certain side on the Rip Ride Rocket, but no one so much as blinked at letting him ride any ride in WDW or US. I thought he would be uncomfortable and sweaty with it, but he never whined once. I did way more stressing over the issue than it was worth. I hope you have the same experience.

Our eldest who is 7 broke her wrist at school a month ago. She has a cast on and is having it removed on Monday. She will have had it on for four weeks but they did say that it wasn't a bad break. She has not moaned once about having the cast on and has taken it all in her stride. She took calpol tablets for the first few days but since then, no pain at all.

Can thouroughly recommend a 'protectacast', its like a big rubber glove, 100% waterproof, our DD has only used it in the bath but seems to work really well.

definitely seems to be a trend here for broken wrists! My DD broke hers in May but it was 'only' a buckle fracture. Her cast came off last Saturday and although her wrist is weak and she's been a bit frightened to use it all seems okay. I hope your DD has a happy holiday with or without a cast and that she manages to do everything that she wants to.

I am now paranoid with the children and insist they walk everywhere and not run.

Just a thought but if she does have a cast on you could get the characters to autograph it for her!
