I went to the restrooms in the new bakery in France today and did SEVERAL double-takes!:)

There is a restroom on the right and a restroom on the left and both have Unisex signs- figures of both a man and a women.:)

I have never seen a unisex restroom before and it really took me by surprise to see it!:)

I've seen them in lots of places but they are usually single/family occupancy meant for tending to young or special needs family members.

Those are companion restrooms and there are a few in each of the parks.

This, they have been there for several years.

The OP probably was not looking for them, so never noticed them before.

Get out much? ;) I am sure you have been places with them before but didn't notice.

In the U.S. they are one person at a time, typically larger to also be a companion restroom. They are all over the U.S., even rest stops along the highway have them in addition to the ladies and men restrooms. Malls have them too. Overseas they can have multiple stalls and be unisex depending on the country and district you are in.

This is not a new concept at all.

I always call them family restrooms. They come in handy, believe me.

Except they are very limited and priority should be given to people who need assistance using the facilities.

They are not dressing rooms, "I'm scared to let my 10 year old child into the opposite sex bathrooms" bathrooms, or "I got soaked on a water ride room.

I don't know about them being "family restroom". Usually there is signage stating they are such. The bathrooms certainly got me confused when I was there last month. I couldn't figure out which one I was supposed to going in!

When we were there, they were not utilized much at all and not as tidy, and if you have a child who is handicapped or needs to go now and needs assistance, they come in very handy. I never saw anybody using them as dressing rooms, but we only used the ones in Epcot. I did see them being used by single parents with several children who weren't all the same sex. I didn't find them to be as clean as the main restrooms. I actually pointed one out to a dear lady in a wheel chair when the ladies room had quite the line!

We happened upon a family restroom at AK across from Tusker House. It was handy as I have two small children.

That's right people needing assistance including families (while younger members anyway) as far as I know all bathrooms are on a first come first serve basis

Disney calls them Companion Assisted Restrooms. They are nothing like the family restrooms we have at our local malls. Those are made to accommodate small children, and usually have toilets low to the ground. The Companion Assisted Restrooms have toilets that are higher up, and grab bars to help out those who need assistance using the toilet. If someone is looking for lower toilets, they should not look to the Companion Assisted Restrooms.

The CARs are very few and far between. I believe there are only 5 in the whole of the Magic Kingdom. So if at all possible they should be left for those who have no choice but to use them.

Here's a list: http://allears.net/pl/restrooms.htm

They are marked like this:

It's like everything else, one can't necessarily assume as you never know when somebody needs assistance with the restroom or needs extra privacy. A kid could look perfectly "normal" but need help (ie., autism, catheterization) so that would suit. I think most people call them family restrooms because it is likely a family member is entering with the assisted party. I don't think most people pay attention to them or even know they are there, unless you've researched ahead of time because you have that need, like we did, because of a circumstance.

I will say, I saw a couple coming out of one in Epcot - who'd had a few too many from F&W and I'll allege there wasn't a whole lot of going to the bathroom going on not with all the giggling they were doing. Try explaining that to your 8 year old!

The thing I noticed was they weren't as clean and that was a bit bothersome.

Were they private, one user at a time washrooms:confused3 Please say yes ;)

Yes, only have one toilet in each of the 2 restrooms.:):)

There are 2 of them, one on the left and one on the right, and they do not carry the Companion Restroom sign that we are all so used to seeing at WDW for the single Companion Restrooms about WDW(Morocco would have the closest Companion Restroom to France).:)

While they could be used as a Companion Restroom there are 2 of them in the same setup as the normal male/female restrooms and their signs just have the male/female figures on them only and not the normal Companion Restrooms sign.

Everyone was doing double-takes!lol:)

It's Disney's position that children under the age of 10 can use the opposite-sex bathroom with their parent. If you have a child with special needs by all means use the companion restroom, but the fact of the matter there are over 100 bathroom stalls in the parks, and only 5-6 companion restrooms in each park available for the many guests with special needs. For some folks, the CAR is the only toileting facility they can use, and for some of these people, when nature calls it can be an urgent matter that will result in embarrassment if they are not able to access a restroom ASAP.

All I am suggesting is to be considerate of those who don't have the option to duck into just any old restroom. If its just a quick duck in to take care of short business, go for it... but if its going to be like the scene with Boo and Sully in the bathroom or longer, consider using the standard facilities. :goodvibes

A little compassion goes a long long way
