We've been to WDW about 20 times in the last 15 years or so, but had never been to Disneyland. My husband had wanted to go for a long time, but I kept talking him out of it. From what I read, I thought it would be too small and not worth the cross country trip (I'm not a huge fan of flying). Due to some hard times he's had family- & work-wise lately, he really needed something to cheer him up. So I put my negative feelings aside & booked a 4-day trip to Disneyland. I'm happy to say, he was right and I was wrong - we all had a great time!

We stayed at the Grand Californian - wow! The hotel was fabulous and our room was beautiful. Even though we had a standard view room, we had a great view of California Adventure. The only thing we didn't like was that Whitewater Snacks closed at 7:00 and the hotel store closed at 9:00 (we're used to the food courts & stores at WDW closing at 11:00 pm or midnight). My daughter was thrilled because there was a mommy cat and her two baby kittens hanging around outside of the restaurant.

Even though WDW and DLR share some of the same attractions, most are not the same. Space Mountain was so much better at DLR, as was Pirates. The Haunted Mansion with the Nightmare decorations was amazing. However, we prefer WDW's Tower of Terror and the waiting area for Toy Story Mania.

Other observations:
* Although it seemed odd at first, having the entrances to the two parks right across from each other with Downtown Disney right there as well was so convenient.
* Cueing: Rather than trusting people to form an orderly line on their own, DLR keeps people in cue lines more. There was none of the pushing, shoving, and hanging-on-for-dear-life-to-your-loved-ones that's needed at so many attractions at WDW.
* We ate at Blue Bayou and, even though the restaurant was quite nice, we thought the prices were ridiculously high.
* Direct access to California Adventure from the hotel was a fantastic perk.

All in all, we had a great few days at Disneyland and were sad to have to leave. WDW is still our favorite, but DLR has won our hearts as well. We're looking forward to going back sometime soon! :lovestruc

That is toooo awesome :)

I'm so glad that you had an amazing time at DLR and that you will be making a trip back over to my favorite place on earth !

A lot of your points are verrrry true. There are a lot of great things about DLR that are different from WDW.

I also agree about liking TOT better at WDW. Its MUCH better there.

It sounds like you can really appreciate the differences in each park and what makes each one special, rather than kind of dismissing DLR because it is not as big as WDW, which I think some people do. There are many reasons I want to eventually get myself to WDW - for one thing, I would LOVE to be there during the holidays to roam through every hotel and see all the different edible Christmas displays! And I would love to wander around Epcot and Animal Kingdom. But it all could be a bit overwhelming for me to plan and pull off, so I am happy to deal with the more manageable DLR for right now. Hopefully I will make it to WDW sometime before I am too old to walk!

I am glad you guys had a great time, and I hope it cheered your DH up for a little while!

A big part of the fun is contrasting and comparing the differences between WDW and DLR and how DLR has managed to accumulate nearly as many attractions into two parks. Straight attractions Florida only has a few more believe it or not. They both rock no doubt!

So glad to hear that you had a wonderful time :wizard:

We met some WDW regulars at the Fontana race in September and they were soo negative on Disneyland. They had no magic at all and I felt bad for them because they came into their trip with such low expectations that even being dreamed with FP's didn't help.

It's nice to see that you had a magical vacation :wizard:

Was 4 days in the park needed? We're doing DL next August and I have 3 days scheduled for it now but could do 4 if we needed them.

I haven't been to DL in 20 years and DH has never been there. We're looking forward to it!

This year I was fortunate to have a business trip to France so I spent 3 days at Disneyland Paris. I loved it! Having Disneyland/studios/downtown disney all right there was great- easy to walk between them. I love WDW but I also loved Disneyland Paris. I'm anticipating the same for DL and all the changes that have been made since I was last there.
