WDW Facts! Did you know...

This is a fun thread.

As far as using Spaceship Earth as an actual golf ball, according to PalMickey, you would have to be one mile tall in order to use it.

When you pass by the piano playing by itself in HM look down at the music sheets on the ground and you can see the ghost thats playing it....creepy :earseek:

The following facts from Disney college intern, Leah, who I met on the DTD bus last Oct. ...

CM's who play face characters are given, at no charge to them, color contact lenses if their eyes need to be a different color to match their characters. All Disney face characters do their own make-up. No make up artists to do it for them. They are trained in make-up application.

All CM's who are characters must be able to sign their character's name the same way as anyone else who plays that character does. They practice until it's perfect. Leah was several characters for WDW inc. Stitch, Lilo, Minnie and Mickey. She was kind enough to sign a post card for DS using Mickey's handwriting. DS was suspicious, thinking I did it, so he checked out his autograph book and it's the same hand writing!

When Ariel is asked about the cost, size, etc. of her seashells or other rude remarks, she is told to reply that "I'm sorry ... this is a family place!" w/a smile on her face (although I'm sure she'd love to pop them one!) and happiness in her voice. I would guess that's what all face characters (esp. female) are told to say if they get harrassed by guests.

Each Disney face character must know their character inside and out and have to study their characters movie for every detail.

Some other things that I just know ...

in the holding area at the Muppet 3-D movie, there is a cargo net full of boxes of jell-o ... or "A net full of jell-o" ... which, is a tribute to Mouseketeer Annette Funicello (say "A net full of jell-o real fast!). Ohhhhhhhhhhh!

If you pull on the rope near the area that looks like a dig sight right outside the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular, you'll get a surprise!

That on the wall mural in the Contemporary, there is a 5 legged goat!

Remembered another tidbit from the tour...........

The CM who "plays" Tinkerbell during WISHES is actually paid more than the other characters because of hazard pay for flying. That is the CM's only duty as well..........to "fly" during the fireworks. It is a very sought after job.

My sister wanted that job growing up. I always thought it was funny...now I think she may have been on to something.

sorry this quote was the one about the birds from HM. It all made sense at the time.

My sister was attacked by birds right as she turned away from the McDonalds at epcot...next to Canada. They took all of her food. My BIL and I were waiting with the kids and we started laughing so hard my DH had to finally help her. I still giggle thinking about it. And yes they gave her new food for free.

Oh here's a fun one - CMs are ABSOLUTELY NOT ALLOWED to answer the "what time is the 3 o'clock parade" question with "3 o'clock"

They must answer in some way that the guest doesn't feel stupid, like, "the 3 o'clock parade passes this point at approximately 3:10"

Oh, and we all know there is no cross-theming allowed in MK, hence the utilidors, however at MGM CMs are freely allowed to wander into other areas of the park in full costume. It's supposed to help with the "real, live, working set theme" as at any movie lot you'd see all sorts of people in all sorts of costumes. So having someone dressed in Star Tours gear walking across Animation Courtyard is all part of the 'magic' in that park.

It's nice to be on vacation and made to feel "smart." CM's are accomodating!

Disney was the first company to combine successfully the notion of entertainment with shopping.

In 1930 Walt’s brother Roy signed the first international licensing contract with Borgfeldt and Co for production and sale of Mickey Mouse merchandise.7
The first Mickey Mouse watch was sold by the Ingersoll Watch Company in June 1933.2
By 1954, 700 companies were making more than 3,000 Disney items from pyjamas and underwear to toys, games and school supplies.
The first official Disney Store opened in Glendale, California in March 1984 and the first store outside the US in London in November 1990.

Facts about Walt Disney (the man):

# Walt Disney only attended one year of high school.

# In 1923, in California, Walt and Roy formed the Disney Brothers Studio. At Roy's insistence, the company soon became the Walt Disney Studio, since he felt that Walt's name should be emphasized. This is officially recognized as the starting date of The Walt Disney Company.

# He grew his famous mustache at age 25.

# He was the voice of Mickey Mouse for two decades.

# He often ate lunch at his desk -- his favorite meal was chili and beans, which he ate with tomato juice and soda crackers.

# He admitted to being "scared to death" when he had to face the camera to introduce episodes of the "Disneyland" television series.

# He won more Oscars than anyone else -- 32.

A young Walt Disney created a character named Oswald who starred in a series of 26 silent cartoons between 1927 and 1928. When Walt lost the rights to Oswald, he came up with the character known as Mickey Mouse.

Even greatness started with failure! :goodvibes

Roy E. Disney is alive and well and has actually filed a law suit with Stanley Gold. Roy O. Disney has been dead for a long time. It was a Disney custom to name the first born male after the father and the middle name was the Madien name of the mother(I believe. I know it had something to do with the mother)

Close - Roy Edward is named for his mother, Edna. Roy Patrick (Roy E's son) is named for his mother, Patricia.

Especially with the popularity of walkie talkies in the parks, it's very possible for guests to be on the same channel as CMs calling for help.

Um, no, it's not. WDW uses 2 communication systems, neither of which are "open to the public"

1. (older system) Commercial-grade two way radios, set up to use a professional repeater system (all units transmit to a central location, which then "repeats" the transmission to all other units, rather than communicating unit-to-unit as is done by consumer-grade units). Disney owns the rights to several radio frequencies in the Orlando area. Although the transmissions could be picked up by someone with a police-scanner type device, it's unlikely that your average guest will have one of these with them.

2. (newer system ... most of WDW has been transitioned to this system) Nextel phones, set up to use a custom talk-group. (actually, different talk-groups depending on where you are, probably several for different business areas in each park)

Sounds like we all should be buying Lou's Trivia book!

I bought the book, and I find it hard to read. I love these threads that I can just read the facts. The trivia book is set up to ask you questions, and then you have to flip to another section of the book to get the answers.

On an illuminations cruise the captain told us that they put the wrong statues on top of the swan and the dolphin. If you look at the swan, there are waves painted on the building. If you look at the dolphin, there is grass painted on the building. The dolphin (fish) should be w/ the waves and the swan should be on the building w/ the grass. They didn't change them to where they are should be b/c they weight too much and it would have cost too mcuh money.
Also, these buildings were designed to have the monorail go through them which would lead to MGM and connect to the other parks but it was too expensive. If you look at the buidlings, there are dark squares in the center of them. The rooms were designed like the Contemporary, where rooms could be taken out individually from the main frame. Which is another interesting tidbit. The rooms at the CR were designed so they could remove each room from the building one at a time so they could update the rooms w/o interupting the rest of the hotel. But then the building settled and they could not move the rooms.

None of this has been confrimed but it's very interesting...

I heard the same thing about the mix-up from the Captain of an Illuminations Cruise. It makes sense.

The thing about the monorail is debatable. The black squares are supposedly a "trademark" of the guy who designed the buildings. I don't know if this is true, but it could explain the black squares just as easily as a place to put a monorail through them.

His name is Michael Graves. A LOT of his design handiwork was for sale at Target. I'm not sure if it still is. His trademark on Target merchandise is a sort of bubble kind of look.

Wouldn't surprise me if the black areas are just a Michael Graves thing.

Please do not let this discourage you! Lou's Disney World Trivia Book is wonderful! I like not having the answers posted with the question. It is laid out by park so I took a piece of paper numbered it and then went and checked my answers at the end. I've been through the book 3 times and I am still learning! Lou put A LOT of work into the book and it is fabulous! He also has a great site.... www.disneyworldtrivia.com
