Although I am not a member who spends a lot of time in the Photography board I am hoping someone might be able to help me out.

For christmas my mother-in-law bought us a lovely phrase cut out of 1/4 inch wood and its painted in black. The phrase says "When you wish upon a star!" and there is also a depiction of Tinkerbell and a star.

We have been trying to fufill an idea of what we want to do with this item since Christmas, but to do so we need a really nice, high resolution picture of the castle.

Our idea is to get a picture of the WDW castle and print it out to poster size (note the image can't have a copyright) and then we want to adhere the words on the image and then put them in a large picture frame. We have a the frame, glass, the backing and the phrase, now we just need a high resolutuon image. The image needs to around 3000 X 2000 if not larger and well focused/clean without a lot of noise in the image.

To add to this, we want to pull in some colors from our living room, which is a lot of dark woods with dark brown leather. The accents are in faux fur throws in a blonde/brown and burnt umber (brownish orange) pillows. So to complement it we are thinking that an image of the castle at dusk or sunset might be best. Another option is a photo that may have been modified slightly to appear to have some of these tones (without going into sephia).

If the picture has the "partners" Statue in it that would be even better along with as few people (or taken at an angle that avoids a lot of people) in the shot as possible.

Preferrably the image would be in landscape/wide too.

We know this is a fairly specific request, but I can only imagine in one day how many pictures are taken of the castle each day. If someone has one fo these types of pictures or is heading down to Disney soon and could snap a few off in/around these parameters that would be GREAT!

Feel free to contact me on here or if you want to talk about it more formally on the phone if you can do this, that is also an option.

Thank you!!

If this would work higher res is available. Needs a bit of post processing first though, a bit of straightening and foreground "lightening" of the "shadow" and getting the people out from behind Walt.

Definately going with the right idea in terms of what we are looking for in the picture although I think for our intent this one will not work because its more portrait and would be hard to pair down to landscape without losing a lot at the top or bottom.

But definately right idea...appreciate your post.

Hi - if nothing pops up on the boards, I will take the shot for you on Sunday. I just got to WDW tonight. I expect to have a wide angle lens with me.

Chuck

Not sure if this is the angle you are looking for or not, I thought the colors might work. If you would like to use it I could send you the full size file. The watermark is only there for posting online.

That's gorgeous.

I'm curious as to why the pic can't have the copyright on it, if someone is going to be nice enough to provide a picture that you need, why shouldn't they get credit, and be able to protect their image..

If I am turning the picture into a poster, a copyright would prevent me from doing so because no commercial printer will reprint a picture that is copyrighted without full written consent of the author.

I can assure you I have no mal-intent with this, and you will not all of a sudden see the poster in commercial venues, just in my house.

then why not ask for a release form..

I wasn't reallyconcerned about seeing the poster in commercial venues, because even without the copyright being onthe pic, they are all still copyrighted at the instant the pic is taken, so the original photographer would still be able to take legal action,

it's just that some of us like having our watermark on our prints wherever they may be hanging..

A release would be fine, but I am trying to avoid making this a bigger deal then it needs to be.

To be honest, then I probably wouldn't want the picture if there was a glaring watermark, sure a very small one in the corner is fine, but most are large and somewhat obtrusive to the picture. Here in lies the problem, what ever picture I use, I most likely am going to crop/adjust so a non-obtrusive watermark very well could be partially cut off.

I think in the end, I'm not looking for someone who does this for a living, I am asking from the perspective of someone doing something nice for someone else.

I'm sorry you feel this is making it a bigger deal than neccessary, I was just trying to be clear on a few things
people who shoot for a living are also capable of being nice, they are just more likely to want to protect the integrity of their creation,

I'm glad I asked these questions to clear a few things up. people should be fully aware of the intent to crop or alter their photo,
which without permission can be considered copyright infringement
just for the record removal of a watermark is a felony, and no reputable lab would print a photo with a partial watermark...
as for size of watermarks, most pros I know use 2 different sizes,, yes a large obtrusive watermark for internet posting, great way to discourage theft of an image,
and a smaller less obtrusive size for actual prints..
I personally use a very small.embossed watermark on my prints, it's hardly nooticeable, but does prevent copying..

Sorry I wasn't clear that I wasn't necessarily looking for someone who is doing this as a living. I figured that the photography forum was for anyone who may want to post pictures they have taken and share with their fellow disboard members and would be the best place to post this. I wasn't necessarily looking for a professional picture, just a picture that fit within the requirements of what I was looking for.

Again, I was pretty clear on the watermark for a reason, so again if your picture or someone elses doesn't fit the request so be it, its not a big deal. Again, I highly doubt someone who is doing this as a favor for someone else (as I have previously mentioned I am looking for) would seek out and/or care that their picture was edited or cropped to fit the specific needs I was looking for. I personally wouldn't care if someone took some of my pictures and edited/cropped them for a personal use and I think most people blow the whole copyright bit out of proportion.

I think what should be learned from this is make sure you specifically identify that something may be edited and not just reference that there may be chance and that it would seem there are those on this forum who do make a living off their photographs and may feel threatened (a little harsh of a word, but I cannot think of a better term) with this type of request.

I appreciate everyone else who has so generously provided some pictures to work with.

it was fairly clear you aren't looking to buy a photo, which I think would be against dis rules, and certainly against disney's rules..

I don't think people blow the copyright issue out of proportion, any professional, or any amateur that does photography for the art of it, would want to protect their creations, and that is why the law exists, I give thousands of pictures away each year..I often shoot model portfolios to help models build their portfolios, and I give them copies of the pics for free, I also give them the right to make prints for their portfolio or to post them online to promote themselves, what I don't do and most others who shoot model portfolios don't do is give them the right to crop/alter/edit or manipulate the photo in any way, because then it simply is not an accurate interpretation of the photo the photographer created...

so although you personally wouldn't care if your photos were altered, it's not neccessarily a good or accurate practice to assume others would feel the same way.

I personally do not feel threatened by this sort of request, I give away far more pictures than I ever sell, And I would never attempt to sell any disney photos, but I have seen too many cases in real life and online, where people get caught up in the excitement of someone wanting one of their pictures, and then after they've given it, realizing they would have liked photo credit or fair compensation, so I try to point these these issues out to people..

Thanks for the ThreadJack...and life lesson, next time, maybe it would be better to give your history and legal lesson in its own thread...

MICKEY88 - I tend to agree with you here. I've never sold a photo in my life and quite honestly, don't plan to. But, if my photo was hanging in someone's house, I think I would want a small watermark in the lower corner. A friend of ours is a wonderful artist. He graciously gave us an original piece of his artwork. Of course, he signed his piece. I view a photo as a piece of art that should give credit to the artist. Now, it doesn't need to be a distracting neon splash across the middle, but a tasteful small watermark in the corner is appropriate. I do think you need to be careful with cropping also. It can alter the perspective and intent of the original image. I learned this the hard way. I took some portraits of my nieces and gave them to my SIL on CD. I was horrified when I saw the prints she had made. She really messed up the photos by adding some tacky frames, goofy crops, etc. Now, I post them on my Smugmug site and she can order them at cost. I don't make a dime, but at least I know they will be printed as I had intended. This is purely a hobby for me, and I enjoy giving away my photos. But, as the creator of the image, I do expect some respect for my work.

I simply asked questions, you expanded the topic, especially when you made it personal by talking about people being threatened, and the passive agressive comment about thanking the everyone else...who shared pics....if I give the legal lesson in another thread people would miss the point in a thread like yours,

so basically you are saying that if someone is trying to do something I disagree with , and I wish to point out the downside to other people... I don't have the same right to post on here as you do...:confused3

But keep in mind, a small watermark on a picture that is 3000 X 2000 would be much larger once blown up to a poster size...it would no longer be such a small watermark.

As for the cropping, I completely disagree. Although from your artistic perspective, maybe the image was best seen in your eyes that way, but from anothers, they may see something completely different.

The one picture someone posted on here already for everyone else to see is almost perfect, but for what I am doing I need to crop it down and adjust it to fit in the frame, and to fill in some "empty" space. Although the picture is beautiful, my artistic eye/need/desire requires a change to it.

This is why more than one camera exists in the world - so we can each take our own the way we want to see them. :thumbsup2 But cropping/altering someone else's work is no better than chopping up a Beethoven symphony and rearranging parts of it to fit a TV commercial - it is a gross injustice to Beethoven and not a true representation of his talent or intent. That's all.
