what are the chances of walking up and getting a table for breakfast in oct on a saturday? I will make adr for the 4 of us if available but there may be others in our family who want to go ( they have been having a very hard time with the planning ahead thing )

Pretty good. We go for breakfast for our last day every trip (including October). Last year we left on a Sat and had a 8am reservation adn the place was half empty. I think you'll be ok. If you're worried, make the ADR to be safe and cancel if you decide not to use it.
