Well, I'm off to the store on the way to pick Tyler up for a couple things I forgot last night. Then we'll be cleaning when we get home. I told him I'd start before he comes home but can't get motivated to do that, so I'll just tell him I thought it would be more fun if I waited so we could do it together. ;)

Tyler's gonna be so excited when he gets home because he has THREE surprises waiting for him! One is a letter he got in the mail from Jan, another is an envelope he got in the mail from my friend we went to the zoo with last weekend and it has Spiderman comics in it, and the third is a pair of Halloween socks. Strange to get excited about socks, I know, but he's always had a thing for colorful socks. He doesn't like to wear plain socks and his favorites are his Halloween socks. He has 3 or 4 pairs that he's worn for 3 years and they're way too small and falling apart, so I'm hoping he'll let me throw out one old pair. Then later in the week we'll go back to where I found these and he can pick out a few more to replace the rest of the old ones.

OH! And he'll be excited to see the picture I posted of him with his favorite karate instructor. He's sad that she's leaving, and he hasn't see the picture yet. He always says, "She's so pretty!" She's very sweet, but runs class like a drill sergeant, which is exactly the way he needs it to be because she's the only one he responds to.

OK.....done babbling......for now, at least. Later folks!

I have another dilemma. In May I took steroids while on vacation so that I could be "normal" ...... the legs and my energy level. In June, my legs were a LOT worse......something about steroids not being very good for open wounds.

I'm going on vaca again. This time I think I should not take the steroids because I don't want my legs getting worse again. But I'm really going to have to pace myself on the trip. My energy level will be so low and I'll have very swollen feet and legs and I'll have to keep them out of the sun. I think it's best to deal with all of these issues because I can't take the risk.

Anybody else think this is a good idea?:confused3

Let me know and I'll help you.

Thanks Ian. I have had a bit of a browse here, and some good folk have given me some ideas on the US prices. I will chat with Carolyn and see what she prefers to do.

The Digging of the North-South West Eastwood Canal

Sukie and I left the house at about 9:30 this morning to go shopping.

It is pouring today, with flood warnings for areas near rivers (we are not near a river, but it was really pouring down).

There was water about 2 inches high outside our back door. It was coming in over the threshold.

It wasn't always like this. This started last spring.

The land under the El tracks gets very muddy when the weather is wet, so we decided to do something about it.

I had a truckload of sand/gravel mix delivered. We had hired Sukie's friend Corey (the infamous dog sitter) to spread it out.

He ended up doing nothing but whining, so Sukie told him to leave. Sukie then paid a guy wandering down the alley to spread it out.

He did a really good job considering that it was an enormous amount of labor. However, he left a "hump" towards the end next to the alley.

Now we have a convergence of issues.

To deal with the basement flooding, I had our downspout rerouted to not go into the catch-basin, but out along side our garage and to empty under the EL.

So --- what we started experiencing was that went there was a heavy rain, the water came off the roof, sloshed out under the El, hit the hump, then came back and collected behind the garage and along side the house.

The water was getting 2-inches or more deep.

Behind the house we were experiencing "Lake West Eastwood."

Sukie had the idea this morning, while we were standing in the garage, that we should dig a channel, from the the downspout, though the "West Eastwood Hump" and to the alley.

It was pouring down, and we were soaked, but there we were, him with a hoe, and me with a shovel, digging the West Eastwood Cut.

I took the spare dirt and gravel and started building an earthen dam outside our back gate, to prevent the water from rushing out of the downspout and then back towards the side of our house.

Many shovelfuls of gravel later, this was working. The dam was preventing the water from rushing back. However, Lake West Eastwood was filling rapidly.

At one point I considered whether we should build a resort on the edge of the lake and could we have water skiing.

Over an hour later, the channel was completed. Sukie with hoe in hand, and me with my shovel, made the last cut through the West Eastwood Hump.

Water started to flow out to the alley and towards the sewer.

Lake West Eastwood started to drain.

We were both completely soaked and our legs coated with mud. I had blisters on my hands from digging.

You have met us. Now picture us doing manual labor.

Sukie was an absolute mad man and kept shouting, "Dig deeper!"

I'm pleased to say that no human life was lost in the building of the West Eastwood Canal, and our marriage is still intact.

We finally left the house at 11:00 AM to do our shopping.

So much for my Saturday.

:lmao: :lmao: Your Saturday tales are so much fun!!! I wish you had 2 Saturdays each week!!!:rotfl:

Sure... one trip to Panama and you two think you can build a canal!!!!!!! :rotfl:

:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

I don't know what to say really Deb apart from you do really need to take care with your legs. What does your doctor say?

How was babysitting Marilyn? Hope it was fun for you.

You're right, I really do need to care for the legs more so than my discomfort during vacationing. The doctor says no steroids with the open wounds. I didn't listen to him in May.....but my wounds were then and are now closed, they just leak a liquid like water from the edema when they swell up. So I didn't think it would affect me. I was wrong.

I better listen to the doctor this time. Don't want these legs getting any worse. Issue resolved, thanks Marilyn!

Babysitting was fine thanks. The girls just watched The X Factor as they watch that every week. Very easy!!

I'm so glad to hear your wounds are closed now Deb.

You said this trip would be more low key, so perhaps you can just take the parks easy and go back to the hotel for a break and put your feet up!!

Jan seems to like Gatorade for her energy boost, but it probably has sugar in it!!

I'm so glad we made you laugh Marilyn... :goodvibes :goodvibes :goodvibes

How was your weekend???

I'm glad you all did too!!!:thumbsup2

Good weekend thank you. Quiet. Loads of washing today for some reason.:confused3 Plenty of hurricane watching too. Looks bad down there, but haven't heard much of fatalities/injuries etc as yet.

Glad your babysitting went so well.

Yes, the wounds are closed, but the legs are so badly scarred and bumpy.

Now that's a good idea. We'll probably get to the parks when they open and then run around until it's time to eat dinner then leave. I will definitely make John happy if I elevate the legs. I will have to do that.

I usually drink water, but I'll have to try the Gatorade if I can find sugarless. I can't afford those extra calories.

Even though I'm on vacation, I'm not going to overdue the eating. I'll watch my calories loosely and watch my portions. I will be out and about more, so that's a good thing. Of course, there will be champagne involved! C'est la vie!:cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Champagne is easy to drink with your feet elevated!!!:goodvibes

So me and John both talked to DD Sandi today in FL. She said that she has not even thought about us coming down because Joe has been sick. They found a non-malignant tumor on his colon that needs to be removed surgically along with part of his intestines. YUCK!

So we may not even see Sandi and Joe and the boys when we go down this time. I don't want to sound cruel, but both John and I don't care enough about Joe to visit him in a hospital during our vacation. If we see them at all it will only be Sandi and the boys for a quick visit. That's fine with us. We like them better anyway.

We'll see what happens when we get there and just leave it open for now.

We were going to see my favorite cousin in FL too while we are there. But I was talking to his father yesterday, my favorite uncle that was recently in ICU, and he told me that my cousin is throwing up after he eats at every meal. He's undergoing testing to find out what it is so that it can get fixed.

I care about my cousin and I would definitely go see him in the hospital while on vacation. So we'll have to see when we get there with visiting him too.
