I thought I had shoveled enough, my shovel got down to where it couldn't scoop any more, so I assumed the hard stuff was the concrete under the snow. I found out the hard way I was wrong. Turns out the snow was just packed really hard and I got my car stuck at the end of my driveway! So I had to walk through the neighbor's yard to get to where I could shovel around my tires on one side. Walking through that snow was awful because it came almost up to my knees, so my whole lower pant legs were wet by the time I was done. I managed to get unstuck, but my shovel BROKE in the process! Not good because although today is supposed to be snow-free, we're supposed to get another 8 inches or more tomorrow until Monday morning. :headache:

OH, and after all that, I drove up to the office and my phone cord is not there either. The Energizer Bunny lawyer was there and he asked if I'd come to do some work. :rotfl2: I told him I would, but I have to go home and hide Tyler's presents, then do a better shoveling job, and I have to clean and finish putting up my Christmas lights in case my mom still comes tomorrow. Can't call her to ask until I find my phone cord to plug in! ;)

You only have ONE shovel? We have 4 of them, 2 for the front of the house, and 2 for the back.

A shovel for light and fluffy snow and a shovel for heavy wet snow.

The next time we see her she will have all her parts together and her stickers on :thumbsup2

Then to the TRACK!!!

VERY cool!

yes it's a very open kart, but he is fully protected with his helmet, neck brace, chest protector and suit, gloves and shoes. The idea is if he is hit or flips it is better to be tossed clear of the kart than roll with it.

It's funny that I'm not as scared now as I was when he started. Wil is a very safe driver. I worry about the other kids being reckless and hitting him, not him being dangerous.

And I always come back to the fact that you can fall from a horse and break your neck, so why not let him race :confused3

That is so true. Most sports have some risk or after effects. Gymnasts can end up with many injuries, and arthritis.

Back in the days when we had deep snow John made a long handled snow pusher which was basically a flat square of plywood attached to a handle!! I believe we could buy something similar, but John is thrifty!!!:lmao:

Yup, I have (had) one and Tyler had a kid-size one. I can't believe I can't find any in the stores. :headache:

Well, HI Kelly! Thanks for the youtube link for Carousel of Progress, I watched the whole video, very cool!

Sorry for the repeat everybody else, but about Tyler's school, throughout this whole process and lots of meetings at school, we learned there's a school in his school district that can accommodate him better. His current school just isn't staffed or trained for kids like him and they just stopped trying to put him in the regular classroom because it was just setting him up for bad days. So he'd bounce from the resource (special ed) teacher to the school social worker's office, to the OT room, to the principal's office, depending on whose schedule would allow time with him. They each gave up time with other kids that they're supposed to meet regularly with, so those kids parents were getting upset too (understandably), but they were trying to do the best they could to keep him from situations that are known trouble spots for him. He wasn't eating lunch with the other kids, but had lunch in the social worker's office and got to invite a buddy every day to join him for lunch and their own private recess after the rest of the school went in from the playground (he eventually bumped up to 2 lunch buddies every day).

The new school is only a mile down the road from his current school and he'll be in what they call a basic classroom. His current school is only set up for learning disabilities in the resource room, but the new one is for EI and sensory too. There's the resource teacher and TWO parapros, and the maximum number of kids at one time is 7 in that room. Although he's been away from academics for a couple months, they will first work on behavior management because that's what's getting in the way of his learning, the behaviors that result from his sensory issues. They will focus on strategies he can learn to use when he's feeling overloaded instead of running out of the school or hurting whoever's closest or totally disrupting the class. At the same time, he will still be assigned to a regular 1st grade class, and they will put him in their as much as he can handle, which may not be much at first. In the beginning they will set up a schedule where he can choose 2 activities or academic areas that he enjoys and will send him to class for those (with a parapro) so he'll have a better chance of being successful. As things improve with him, they'll push him into the regular class more and more, depending on how much he can handle, but if he just can't succeed there, this school is set up for him to stay all day in the special ed room and do his work there if that's what works for him. The former school was only set up for 2 1/2 hours in special ed maximum per day.

Last Wednesday the staff from the new school came to his former school for a new IEP and to meet Tyler and talk with him a bit. Then the next day, his former special ed teacher and school social worker took him to the new school to see his new classroom and new special ed classroom. I'll find out from him today when he comes home how the tour went and what he thinks about it.

The staff at the new school attend training regularly on sensory issues, and went through a session where they have to maneuver through a room blindfolded with somebody brushing them with feathers or tapping them or making loud noises behind or next to them to startle them. The purpose was to show them how most of these kids feel in an environment that is normal to us. For some kids with sensory issues, the hum of the overhead lights irritates them, when most of us can't hear it. His new special ed teacher is certified in learning disabilities, and emotional impairment, AND all autism spectrum disorders, so she's dealt with just about every type of disorder and has experience and training. I almost cried with relief when I heard that.

He'll start January 5 when he goes back from Christmas break.

wowowowowowowowowow, this is such great news. Thanks for replaying the story. I kept going back through pages, but wasn't finding it. I can't believe you ended up only 1 mile from the other school. That couldn't be better. this sounds like a smaller version of exactly what I was describing to you. The smaller the better for Tyler.

Jackie: I finished Midnight Sun, can't wait for the final version. It should be about 20000 pages. I'm #1 placement for Breaking Dawn and obssessively checking to see when my turn comes up at the library. It's driving me crazy.

Nan: loved your pictures of the go carts. It is so darn cute it makes me want to jump on the back.

All of Tyler's presents are in the trunk of my car (Marilyn, is that "boot" for you?). I have 3 under the tree for him from ME. I can't wait until Christmas and am so tempted to let him open them earlier! :goodvibes From me, he's getting the camo Timex with the helicopter second hand, a Pirates of the Caribbean lunch bag for school with his name stitched on (Disney Outlet online), and one of those Hamilton figurines (I think they're called Hamilton, can't remember) of Mickey & Pluto as firefighters, spraying a fire hose from the hydrant. Very cute! And that's it until he gets Santa's gifts. I CAN'T WAIT! I wish Santa could come early!

I also tore apart my bedroom looking for my phone cord. I'm starting to panic because I don't know if I'm supposed to pick Tyler up or if they'll still be at Tyler's aunt's for the Christmas gathering and his dad would drop him off here. I'm going to have to go use a neighbor's phone.

I'm off to go find a phone to use, and eat my lunch. :goodvibes

Kelly, I'm glad too! I never knew this existed in one of the schools. I've since learned that because of budget cuts, there's only one elementary school in his school district that has a program like this, we just happened to get luck that it's so close. From everything they told me, I really think this will be what he needs to succeed. His dad asked if there are days when nothing seems to work for Tyler and he's too aggressive, are they going to start calling us to come remove him multiple times a week? They said no and that they're trained specifically to handle issues like his. I'm nervous, and I suspect Tyler is too, but from the things he says, I also can see that he seems relieved, knowing he'll be going someplace where he'll fit in. :thumbsup2 His former school teachers said that they could see a huge decrease in his anxiety when they stopped trying to send him to the regular classroom and Tyler got to where he would tell them, there are just too many kids in there, it's just too noisy. So he's starting to recognize situations that are tricky for him. That's a good breakthrough too! :goodvibes

Merry Christmas to you too Connie. Enjoy your stay at Fort Wilderness, and please take some pictures of yours and others' Christmas decorations.

We must have been very spendthrift! We had a big plastic one (like a snow pusher) for light snow, and heavy metal ones for wet snow. And
REALLY heavy-duty ones for when the snow plow pushed all the snow into the driveway right after I had cleared it out! Then Chuck got a snow blower, but it didn't work half the time; also I neededto get the driveway cleared before he was around. I didn't like the snow blower. We had a very long, very wide driveway.

Yes, you can buy plastic ones. John always said his was so much better though.:rotfl2:

You have such sensible spelling over there. We spell plow 'plough' so....the snow plough came along the road. Ploughing!!! Silly!!!

Lots of other things too. Don't know why we have some strange spellings.
.
Left from Anglo, Saxon or German words that used to pronounce all the letters I guess. :confused3:

Americans have shortened a lot of things. I think we are champion abbreviators. :sad2: Not sure I think it is always good though. We also are notorious for using the wrong form of THERE-THEIR-THEY'RE and ITS-IT'S etc.
.

Why in the world are all my neighbors gone?! I guess I'm headed out to find a payphone. :headache: What a pain this is.

Connie, have a wonderful time at Fort Wilderness! Looking forward to hearing all about it when you return. :goodvibes
