My nephew is going to college at the University of Kentucky. So we were thinking of going down to visit him in October/November for a weekend. I checked Southwest but Lexington doesn't come up. Any other budget airline we could use? I did a random search on Travelocity and they are quoting me $260 roundtrip from different airlines. I'm hoping for cheaper if possible since this would be a short trip (funds are limited since we just got back from Disney ourselves). TIA!!

Sorry, but Lexington just isn't a good airport for finding budget fares. SWA only goes to Louisville within the state of Kentucky. You could see if there's a cheap flight to there on SWA, but I doubt it's much cheaper than the price you listed above. Louisville is about 90 minutes drive from Lexington.

Allegiant Air is a small budget airline that operates in Lexington, but I think it only goes to/from Florida locations out of Lexington.

A $260 quote roundtrip from PVD to Lexington really isn't too bad, considering all the factors that make LEX a fairly expensive little airport to use. I'd probably take that if it's still available to you.

And by the way: GO CATS!

Whenever I am going somewhere new, I go to Kayak.com first. They will give you all your flight options so you can see if anyone goes direct or not. I always book directly with the airline, but kayak can tell you which airlines fly the route or have reasonable connections.

I agree with the above, you will not get good airfare to/from Lexington unless you are Florida bound. The $260 actually is surprisingly cheap.

I would look at flying into Louisville or Cincinnati and driving on into Lexington. It would be much cheaper and both are just over an hour away.

Just stay away from the Sept 25-Oct 10 range. Rooms are outrageous and good luck finding a rental car under $600 a week.

$260 is super cheap for Lexington-Providence. I would take it, it won't get cheaper. The average one-way fare on this sector is $204.53; so you should typically expect to spend about $370-$420 to fly this route.

I agree that $260 is a great fare for flying in or out of Lexington. Lexington is a really small airport and the only cheap fares you will get are flying to/from Florida and that has just happened recently. Also like pp said DO NOT come for a visit during the World Equestrian Games or you will pay 10 times what it would normally cost to visit Lexington. Keeneland's fall meet is Oct 8-30 which is alot of fun.

Your nephew made an excellent school choice btw!!

Thanks everyone!!! He leaves on Wednesday and I'm sad to see him go. I still can't believe he's off to college already. I met him and his brother when they were 11 (they are my husband's nephews) and time has flown by. Thanks for the info on when not to go. We may have to wait until spring to visit instead of this fall. I know he'll be home for Thanksgiving which isn't too far away.

$260 is a great fare to Lexington. Consider yourself lucky it's that cheap.
