I'm talking about doing a home remedy or the infomercial one, OR, did you have to go to the Dr.?

I have done the colon cleanse and parasite cleanse by Nature's Sunshine.

Both are very gentle and effective.

It is actually recommended that you do these cleanses twice a year.

I'm not that diligent, but have done them from time to time, depending on what ailes me.

Nature's Sunshine has a website. you can google it. I don't know if I'm allowed to post the website.

Hope that helps!

As a medical professional I have to admit I don't honestly see the point. All of these companies claim that they "clear your body of toxins" but in reality the transit time for mouth to anus is about 18 hours...maybe slightly longer for some, slightly shorter for others. There aren't these little hiding places where bad things live. They either get absorbed or get passed. Once absorbed a colonic won't touch them anyways. Thus you are basically ridding your body of at most about 8 hours of carcinogens you ingested. So...if you can drink water and eat healthy for about 18 hours you've done the same thing! Ideally this would continue. In my head the only reasons to do this are as a prep to colonoscopy where emptyness of the colon is needed and prescribed, or you have an anal fixation and get physical pleasure from it, or (and I'm still out on this) you suffer from chronic constipation and oral treatments aren't helpful. Be careful. Those things can cause massive fluid shifts which can drop blood pressure and even can cause perforation of the colon which could require surgery if they are not administered correctly. They can even kill people on dialysis. That said, if you're fairly healthy it probably won't hurt you and to each his own.

Alexeden mentioned the colonoscopy prep which is something I had to do. I can tell you it didn't cost a lot of money. A few bottles of - I can't remember what it's called - plus a few Dulcalax (sp). All over the counter at CVS and it only cost a few dollars.

I had a colonoscopy last June and the prep kit you can buy OTC. I think it is Fleet 4 for $8. (my dr prescribed me a different kit since it was my first time and I have bowel issues but I can use the Fleet now)
I felt so much better after the cleansing. I plan to do it once a year. I cant describe how I felt better but I did. So many ailments went away. It has been 9 months and they are still gone.

Our body does it's cleansing naturally, be very careful with any product. If you have any health conditions it is always best to talk to a health professional. All those years of school mean more than what a lay person can possibly recommend. It can be dangerous for some people to use fleet laxatives.

I have worked in a gastroenterology office for about eight years and we had a discussion about this around a year ago. My docs said there was no benefit from the "cleanse" at all unless your prepping for a procedure. Your body has the natural ability to do that all by itself and there are no "things" getting stuck along the way.

Your referring to GoLytely or NuLytely, they each are large jugs that you add water to. Each of these require an RX. The fleet phosphosoda is a 3 oz bottle that is OTC located by the laxatives.

Yes, I totally agree with the above. Fleet is definitely not indicated for several areas of the population and can cause severe or deadly complications.

As another medical professional, I agree 100%. I generally advise patients not to take anything, do anything or buy anything that they saw on an infommercial.

I used to be an OR nurse and I promise you -The surgeon did not open up bellys and see 10 year old steaks or gum or anything in there. Just poop. (if it was a trauma or something and they did not have a prep)
Really the body takes care of itself pretty well -especially if you eat healthy.

I did the prep before my colonoscopy and it was AWFUL! I hadn't eaten right for weeks and when I did the prep, I almost ended up in the ER, I had to call the Dr at 3:00 am, he adviced a glass of 7UP and 2 Tylenols and if no better within 45 min go to ER! Turns out I was just dehydrated, but I thought I was having a heart attack. The 7up helped and at 9:00 I went in for the procedure. Never so glad to get the IV and forget!
The prep I used was a fizzy type drink and it made me so sick, I couldn't look at sodas for 9 mos. I don't know why anyone would do that unless they had to.

and just needed to comment that they are one of the nastiest things in creation!! (IMHO, of course :) )
i had to use it before a hernia surgery. after waiting 8 hours, the doc said they needed to reschedule for the next day b/c of an emergency.
i told him there was no way i was ever coming back if i had to use that cr*p again :scared1: (informed him that i would prefer the surgery without anesthia to that stuff ~ TG he understood, & i didn't need to use it again).

hopefully, the stuff OP is talking about is not similar :scared:

drink some cherry juice, every thing will be alright. make sureit is 100% pure. Watch tv for 2 hours and wait!:goodvibes

My neighbor across the hall died from taking a colonic. She tried to talk me into doing it with her and I said "No Way!"----thank goodness!

Thanks for all the responses. This is very enlightening. I guess I don't NEED to do this as much as I thought. I'll start drinking water. I certainly didn't think they did everything the infomercial bragged it did. But I wanted real opinions first. Thanks again Disers.

The medical opinions here have been very helpful, as I've also been thinking about doing a colon cleanse. I don't have any colon issues, but I've read/heard that people have pounds worth of old material stuck along the lining of the large intestine, and they feel like a new person when the colonic washes it all out. Just a myth, I guess.:confused3

Your post made me crack up. I used to work with a guy who was convinced if you ate a bite of pork, it would stay in your stomach for SIX WEEKS! He was CEO - with stupid comments like that, I personally wouldn't have trusted him to find his you-know-what with a flashlight!
