I have a preteen this time on this cruise, before they were in the Lab so I never though about it, I don't want to turn him loose with a wave phone and possible have to pay the $250 to replace it, are their ship phones like in hotels around the ship, that he can call our wave phone to check in ?

Each child is different but my just turned 10yo daughter handled her wave phone with no problems. Of course, she knew if she lost it than she was done roaming the ship. Only been one one DCL cruise but I don't remember seeing any phones around.

I was worried about the same thing but our 10 year old also handled the phone situation quite well. He wore cargo shorts or his bathing suit that both have velcro pockets. He always put the phone in this "secure" pocket. We found that he called us to check up on us more than we called him!! :rotfl:

That is exactly the way it was with my 10 year old daughter. She was constantly checking up on me on her wave phone :) It was nice. She also handled the phone well, but had many warnings about losing it. I got her a pouch to carry the phone in that she wore around her neck.

The wave phone system really works well. I don't remember seeing ship phones throughout the ship so DCL is expecting passengers to use the wave phones.

I too, was nervous the first time my 11 year old took off with a wave phone. But like other posters, he contacted us way more than we contacted him. He liked the texting feature.

I agree about getting cargo shorts so that the pockets are big enough. Also, on Etsy there is a woman who makes wave phone holders that come with a clip.

I told my preteen that if he damaged or lost the phone, he was paying for it. But everything worked out and he managed to take good care of it.

Good luck!

My 11yr old has an iphone that she takes care of very well, so I'm hoping the same will prove true for the Wave. I will be cruising with my DS 15 and my DD who will be 12 by then. I plan to rent an additional Wave so all three of us have one :)
