Any of you oldtimers remember a wave machine at the Polynesian resort? When I say remember, I mean did you actually ever see it? It was built back in the very early days of WDW. It was on and near an extension of land opposite the Poly beach area. There is supposedly still some remnants of the mechanism in the water by the Poly.

We went on a fireworks cruise in May and the guide/ driver said the machine is still there. And could be made fully operational in a short amount of time. I think he said 24 hours. The reason it was shut down was the cost of the replacement of the sand, It was costing millons. I had never known this existed until our cruise. the guide was great and told us all kinds of great information!

I remember it! I also remember seeing surfers riding the waves. This was my first trip to Disney and we stayed at the Poly. I didnt know it was still there or why it is no longer used. But since you said oldtimers...nope never heard of it;)

It was eroding the sand on the beach; as twinmomplus2 said, sand replacement costs were too high.

I've also read that it broke down a lot, and the imagineers spent a great deal of time and money fixing it. Thanks for the web site info and the pictures available there.
