waterproof cast?

I got my cast today but the cast guy talked me out of the waterproof cast ...he said it wasn't good for everyday washing /showering
He said it was more for pools and that it wasn't good to get soap etc in it.I have a feeling I'm going to regret it but whatever... So, I have a very bright pink regular cast to deal with for the next 4 weeks. It will come off 4 days before we head to WDW! Thanks for all the info!

You can still get a plastic cover for your cast to at least shower. I broke my ankle last year and bought the plastic cover that is a pain to wrestle on then shrink wraps around the cast so you can shower. I called it the "leg condom" and never got a drop of water near it while in the shower juggling on one leg.

I bought mine from my ortho but I understand that cast covers are also sold at any drug store like CVS or Walgreens.

I do hope DD can get her cast tomorrow, but her hand and fingers are still VERY swollen.
Her appt. is in the afternoon, so we'll see. She is missing a lot of work and has no insurance, so this is really a bad thing for her.

i broke my ankle last may and when i was finally able to get a cast (3 weeks later), i got a waterproof one. it covered my foot and calf. i went to the beach with it. great for the pool. when i got out, i would just tip it to get the water out, and then set my foot or leg on a towel until it dried out.

when i went to the beach, i had to put a cover on it (rite aid... sort of a pain, it would fill with air so i'd be in the water w/ a huge balloon, my own raft! but kept the sand out!)

also made bathing SO. MUCH. easier. for 3 long weeks, i had splints on it and getting a bath was a production. it was still difficult b/c it was my foot/ankle so i had to stand on one leg, but i was grateful i could shower rather than being stuck with baths. i didn't have any problems with soap/shampoo running down in it, my ortho never said anything about that being a problem.

my ins. also didn't cover the waterproof, i had to pay $60, and it was worth every penny. also, it didn't stink or have all that dead skin on it when the cast finally came off. my son had a reg. cast on his wrist for about 5 weeks and ohhh myyyy the stink! he had it done at the hosp and we weren't given the option of having a waterproof one.

If you can't get a waterproof cast you can get waterproof cast covers. The two we have tried for my children are from Xerosox and DryPro. You can google either of these names and order online or call around to Health Care Supply places near you. I did the sizing on the site and then picked it up at my local Pharmacy.
It is a blue rubbery latex arm or leg shaped sleeve that you stretch over the cast and the skin above the cast and then you pump the air out of it with a little squeeze ball type pump that attaches to it. This creates a vacuum and water cannot enter.
My son had 2 broken arms during the summer and we have a pool that he spent hours in Diving, swimming to the bottom and rough housing and never any water on his cast.

DD broke her arm last July and we requested the waterproof cast. At first they weren't sure she would quality, but it ended up being fine. But I did have to ask, they didn't offer it.

She was told to NOT use it in a lake. We are in MI and lakes are everywhere Not just for the sand, but because of all the other possible things that are in a lake. Germs, small microbes. Yes, we could have rinsed it off after, but felt it better to be safe rather than sorry.
