Trying to decide if I should invest in a waterproof camera. On our March cruise we will go parasailing for the first time...I'd love to capture it on video/picture. My good camera is a Nikon D40 which I won't take on this excursion....We have a couple of other digital cameras that I could take....certainly wouldn't want them to get wet...but, I don't have the investment in them like I do with my Nikon.....I have been admiring a waterproof camera..and noticed today it's on sale at Best Buy...ending tonight....I've thought I've wanted one...to capture the parasailing.....the Aquaduck...etc...this will be my 9th DCL cruise...will I be OK without the waterproof...or should I make the investment and go for it? :confused3:confused3

For Parasailing, you could get away with a non waterproof one if you wanted. Since you don't get really wet at all. Especially since you have ones that you could take. Just put it in a ziplock bag and then when its your turn to go up, take it out and hold on to it. We didn't get wet at all except our toes.

Though, if you want a waterproof camera then for a cruise is the time to get it. We have one and love it also. We have taken it snorkeling, just swiming in the ocean and waterparks. There are so many places it comes in handy. We even used it for our dolphin swim.

So if the price is right, and its the specs you want go for it.

I have been looking into getting one, too. It seems that many are happy with their Canon PowerShot D10. Hope more people share their opinions!

we bought one and i love it - we've taken pics of dd swimming, the slides at the resorts which is soooooo much fun to rewatch and relive.

plus we have a pool at home and use it during the summer here.

buy it - you won't regret it.

I recently got a kodak playsport(video and still) and I LOVE IT:love:. We took it to Castaway in october and got some very good shots with it! It takes HD video and 5 MP stills. Ive gotten a ton of use out of it from CC to water rides to our pool plus dryland video. Its small and compact also:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

My dd has this Fuji http://www.fujifilm.com/products/digital_cameras/z/finepix_z33wp/ and it works great for her. She is a swimmer/coach and uses it in the pool all the time to review technique. We will be using it for the dolphin swim and on cc this summer (wow-I finally get to say "this summer") and I'm sure it will be great.

Since you already have a couple of digital cameras you can save some $ and get a fuji disposable 35 mm. Those work well too.

we bought two of the waterproof disposables, one to give to some folks on the boat the other for us up in the air. so glad that we did! the pics we got of us going up and the ones from up above turned out great. and we did get wet because we asked to be dipped in the water. ;-)

What waterproof camera do you have?

Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP 10MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom (Green)

Also bought an accessory package that included silcone case and a strap that makes it so it floats!

I have had it for almost a year and half and still works great. It does great outside pictures in general. Which makes it nice at watery places where you don't want to deal with two cameras. Indoor not so much.

I recently purchased the Kodak Playsport water proof hand held video camera and LOVE LOVE LOVE it! We took it snorkling in Grand Cayman and Cozumel, took still pics while parasailing and all kinds of activities on Castaway Cay. The bonus is that I got it for $75 at staples with sales and coupons!

I can't say enough about how awesome it worked. Here's video and a still photo we took. I apologize in advance for the fact that I can't keep my hand still while I'm video taping!

just bought fujifilm xp10, is their next gen in water proof camera. it is water/shock/freeze/dust proof. bought it specifically for the up coming cruise, but also so my dd(4) can play around with it, that is where the shock proof comes in handy. the older fujifilm is only water proof.

Love hearing all the good things about the waterproof cameras! I did notice some video ones too..when I was shopping today...Hummm...so many choices.......I love to record EVERY minute so it is extra hard to narrow all my wants and needs down.

Great video quality.....and I know from experience it is hard to film underwater...I think you did a great job! The still pic looks great too...Thanks for sharing...I'm going to check out the Playsport!

I have a Canon Rebel & a Canon Powershot that I also wouldn't take Parasailing. We have a Vivitar ViviCam that does a really good job for snorkeling etc. The one we have is the 6200 & that has been replaced with a newer model since we got ours (the 8400). It has a rubber housing which makes it VERY DROP PROOF and it came with a long neck strap which you can tighten up - easier than having it tethered to your wrist and more secure. It will also do videos and is waterproof to 10 meters (30 feet). I LOVE having digital underwater pics now - sooo much better than those disposable film jobs. (We took it on the jet skis, parasailing and snorkeling!) :thumbsup2 http://www.bing.com/shopping/vivitar-vivicam-8400-point-shoot-digital-camera/p/AB26A38CFF6912BFC4CF?q=vivitar+vivicam+underwater+camera&FORM=ENCA0

Then last summer DH got me a Kodak Playsport for my birthday so we could video DS's swim meets. It's OK - I am not IN LOVE WITH IT like some of the other posters. I mean for what it is and the price it's alright. And it is small enough to fit into your pocket which is what I wanted. I took the neck strap off the Vivitar Camera & put on it too. But it does not zoom enough for me tho in a lot of instances. Also, the first one we got stopped working after 1 day :scared1: so we took it back to Best Buy & exchanged it. OH and I felt like the battery life was REALLY SHORT so we bought a spare. Then 2 months later we were on vacation & went on a water skiing / tubing adventure & I got it out to video DS and it was burning up hot & wouldn't turn on!! AGAIN!! I was TICKED. I took the battery out & let it cool off then tried the other battery & it got all overheated again so no videos of DS. :headache: By the time we got home it was just past the Best Buy 45 day return window so I had to contact Kodak & ended up sending it in. They couldn't fix it and replaced it with a refurbished one. I haven't really used it much since tho. I tried at a recent swim meet but it just didn't have enough zoom on it for me to bother. I would buy a "real" video camera next time if I had enough money - but of course then it wouldn't be waterproof!! This thing was a fraction of the price tho. I am just not convinced about the reliability yet. :confused3

I have that same underwater camera....I bought it at Wal Mart 2 summers ago before a trip to The British Virgin Islands.....we had fun testing it at the local pool.........one of the first times in the sea......somehow the lock opened...and the camera was flooded! :( Wal Mart did exchange it for us...and I still use it from time to time and it does OK pictures UNDERWATER...but, out it's not good....I learned that underwater and waterproof don't mean the samething. I'm wanting one that I can take down a waterslide etc...and take video or pic..and not have the image look like a funhouse mirror...

I got this and I totally LOVE IT. This is the exact bundle I purchased, only $10 less than I paid for it. http://www.amazon.com/Kodak-PlaySpo...MGKK/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1293939932&sr=8-3

the only thing I HATE about this is the software that is pre-loaded onto the camera, and installs every time you plug it directly into the computer. I pull the SD card and put it right into the computer to get around this issue....

Thank you everyone for your suggestions and input! I spent the evening checking in on the posts and reading any type of reviews of waterproof cameras online that I could find...WOW...so confusing....pros and cons..many good and bad reviews on the same product......I decided to go ahead and purchase....Olympus 6020....I am crossing my fingers that I will be pleased with the quality of pictures and video.....this is the camera I saw in BB today and was told my the sales associate it was probably the best fit for what I was looking for...I regret that the camera was not hooked to power so I couldn't take a picture and "Play" with it...But, soon enough I guess....I'll be watching the mail and anticipating my new camera's arrival.....

Now off to bed to dream about The "Dream"!

I have the Olympus Stylus Waterproof, shock proof, freeze proof and wouldn't part with it!! It's taken better pics than my expensive digital SLR. I bought mine at Sams and we loved it so much we went and got a better version for my hubby at Wolf Camera. I've had it 4 years and its' been drug around on pavement by a 2 yr old, taken scuba diving, and every time folks comment on the great pics, and how they LOVE the rapid fire shots so you don't miss that face when someone is excited. And it videos too! WELL worth it!!!
