Watching those clips of Avatar tonight

I was planning to skip this one but several people whose opinions I respect have really praised it. I don't know why I wasn't interested exactly because I like movies of this type and blue people don't bother me. I'll see it in the next week or two.

Boy, I felt the same way....until I saw it! I can't describe how beautiful this movie is! I've seen it twice and would love to see it again.

Ditto. Dh and I were telling everyone that we weren't going to see it because it looked over hyped and just wasn't something we were interested in. Well, we gave in and saw it and LOVED it. I'm not sure that 3D was necessary though.

I had to drag my wife to it and she ended up loving the movie. The 3-D was amazing.

Plot? Recycled many a time. Also, Dances with Wolves keep springing to my mind.

However, easily one of the best movies I have seen in a long time. I enjoyed much better than Titanic by the same director.

Make me want to see that movie even less than I already did. Apparently DP, DD and I are one of the few on the planet who have not seen it.

I am with you! It looks horrible. Did you also hate the Lord of the Rings series and all the Star Wars? To me that was torture.

I guess I'm, in the minority. I went to see it with DH and hated it. It just didn't make any since to me. I ended up going to sleep halfway through it.

I haven't seen it and have no desire to see it. It just doesn't appeal to me at all. I'm not sure why.

Not really into seeing this one either. And I love animation, CGI, all that stuff. Just doesn't appeal to me. :confused3

I've not seen it either, and have absolutely no desire to. I'd rather do dishes.

My husbands and sons saw it and while my seven year old loved it, my sixteen year old and husband said the special effects were great, but the story was extremely predictable. Makes me a bit annoyed that it won best picture, then.

Wow DH wanted to take everyone to the movies today (DS 16, DS 13, DD 11 & Me) but the problem was we couldn't decide on a movie. DH and Ds16 wants to see Book of Eli. But I don't think the other two will want to see that, so then we talked about going to see Avitar. The moives cost a fortune for us to go, even the afternoon showings. So now after these reviews I'm really not sure if I should spend the 60 some dollars for us to go see Avitar. :confused3

Count me as another person with NO interest in seeing this movie. especially if it has political untertones. We go to the movies to be entertained & forget the bad stuff in the news, Don't want to pay to watch it.

I wasn't interested in seeing it but went with my family (MIL treated us and the kids) last night and really enjoyed it. Too bad our place didn't have it in 3-d, it would have ben even better (also without the 3 potty breaks and a soda run, LOL)

My DS had to drag me to it. He even had a fantastic week at school in order to earn the upgrade to 3D. See, I knew he could! :rotfl:

So I wasn't thrilled to have to see it but, boy, did I end up loving this movie. We're going again this afternoon (in 3D again).

Yes, Dances With Wolves would definitely describe the plot line to a T.

I said the same thing. DH took our 23 and 19 year old to see it and I stayed home. Then my 80 year old father really wanted to see it so I went. I really enjoyed it. Dad loved it.

Saw it, and while it was okay, it certainly wasn't the best film I have seen. Heck, it's not in the top 50. Avatar is basically Pocahontas/The Last Samurai/Dances with Wolves/A Man Called Horse/etc with an incredibly predictable plot line and some terrible dialogue. ("Unobtaium"? Really? What the heck?!?)

It was visually stunning, but I probably could have written the rest of the movie from the first fifteen or twenty minutes - I knew which named characters would live, which would die, who would fall in love, etc.

My DH saw it and loved it. He has been talking nonstop about seeing it again. It just looks so fake and stupid on tv, but I guess the effects are meant for the big screen. I will probably cave and go back with him to see it.

On a side note, the movie isn't nearly as successful as the media is hyping it out to be. Don't forget that the 3D surcharges are quite a sizeable portion of the box office take and this is really the first big budget "event" movie to be in 3D. It is still a VERY successful/popular movie, but it is staggering to think what the box office would have been on a movie like Titanic if there was 3d and todays ticket prices then!

PS: To the PP who mentioned Where the Wild things are I completely understand! That movie was AWFUL....seriously awful. It just amazed me that they could take such a beloved and wonderful children's book and make a movie not even remotely for children (my DS was so excited for the movie and then completely bored to tears at it, I felt so bad for him). I didn't think they needed to dumb it down, but they could have at least made it enjoyable for kids and adults and not make an existential art house flick. They need to take a lesson from Pixar!

Ditto! And I love sci-fi movies, and LOTR, etc. I was really disappointed.

Where the Wild Things Are. Easily one of the oddest, darkest, most depressing things I've had to sit through in a very long time. Generally I enjoy dark and odd! Give me a Tim Burton movie, a Dean Koontz or a, Neil Gaiman book and I'm in heaven, but WTWTA left me feeling like there was no hope, no joy, no nothing left in the world. Blech. Awful!

Avatar's story left me cold, but visually... so beautiful! I was truly creeped out by the native's look early on in previews, but within minutes of the movie beginning, they looked perfectly normal to me and from then on, thoroughly reveled in the beauty of their world. If I ever find myself seeing it again, I think I'll just put in ear plugs and enjoy the view. :p

for those of you who are scoffers, not one person i know who said they did not want to go and were DRAGGED to it were sorry they went. if you look through the thread you will see its that way here too. sometimes people miss good things because they "take a stand" and refuse to back off it. dont miss this the way it is supposed to be seen just because of that. it will not have the same affect on a TV and you will feel justified but you will be wrong. is it the greatest thing since sliced bread??? no. but this process will change the way you see movies forever.

Did anyone experience motion sickness when watching this movie? I have a little interest, but not if it is going to give me a headache and I have to close my eyes through 2/3 of it.

Movies with handheld cameras make me sick, with lots of quick jerking movements. I am thinking Avatar on the big screen is not for me.

This is why I plan to go. I try not to judge something by ads alone because I'm too often wrong. It looks like a "pretty" movie if nothing else.
