Saturday night I was at a wedding at a banquet place where there were 3 weddings going on at the same time.
I was in the ladies room and in wanders this 3 year old girl. There's no one in the ladies except her & I, so it wasn't like she was "following Mommy". She goes into a stall, shuts the door, I hear some splashing, the toilet flushes, out she comes to wash her hands. I, of course, now have to wait with her and watch because I am convinced that some maniac will steal this adorable child who no one seems to be watching, other than me. She isn't tall enough to reach the faucet so I turn it on for her. She isn't tall enough to reach the soap, so I get her some soap, she isn't tall enough to reach the towels so I get her some towels. I ask her where her Mommy or Daddy is and she shrugs her shoulders. So off we go out the bathroom door, and she starts to wander toward one of the rooms where another wedding (not the one I was attending) is taking place. Now she's holding my hand (which by the way she grabbed. I didn't grab her hand because I know how freaked parents get about strangers touching their kids). We walk to the dorrway of the room and I see a woman jump up and come running over and she says to me "What are you doing with my child?". So I said "I found her in the ladies room". So the woman says "She was going to the bathroom. She is potty trained". I said, "I understand that but she needed some help in there, couldn't reach the faucet, soap, hand towels, the bathroom was right near the front door of the building, I was worried she'd go out into the parking lot so I walked with her to make sure we found someone". Meanwhile, I am thinking to myself "Because this 3 YEAR OLD is potty trained, you actually think she is old enough to go to the bathroom in a large, strange building full of strangers, by herself".

So then this woman says to me "Well, I'm not sure why you had to bother my daughter". I looked her square in the eye and said "I figured it was better for me to bother her than for some pedophile to get your kid. For the record, three is not old enough to go to the bathroom by yourself. Watch your kid lady, or you'll probably lose her someday. What you should be saying is thank you". She was left open-mouthed and I turned and went back to the wedding that I was attending.
And once again, it made me think in amazement "I couldn't have kids, yet she could".
