Wasps

I have a couple of questions:

1. What possible purpose could there be for wasps, other than to annoy people?

2. Would the food chain be totally out of whack if I made it my life's work to make wasps go extinct?

3. After a wasp stings, does it die? I hope so, because that is the only comfort I have right now.

Except for the stinging part, I wonder the same thing about mosquitoes and ticks. :confused3

If you are going to make killing wasp's your life's mission, then please include all bees. Us allergic people would be appreciative.

I do sympathize, but bees are actually useful and necessary. Wasps serve no purpose.

when I spray the buggers with my hairspray .....and they fall on the floor......I put a big heavy shoe on the end of the broom handle and then walk that shoe across to the bug......that way there is no way that bugger can jump or fly again up my leg or nearby body parts.....scares me to pieces.....
we had carpenter wasps or bees last summer so will watch out for them again....they eat wood and they can hurt those in their way........hubby got them good .....
AND we want to go to Florida in five years for winters.........Hmm I will have to think this over........

From Wiki

Diet

Generally wasps are parasites as larvae, and feed only on nectar as adults. Though relatively uncommon, some wasps are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of fallen fruit, nectar, and carrion. Many wasps are predatory, preying on other insects. Certain social wasp species, such as yellowjackets, scavenge for dead insects to provide for their young. In turn the brood provides sweet secretions for the adults.

In parasitic species, the first meals are almost always provided by the animal that the adult wasp used as a host for its young. Adult male wasps sometimes visit flowers to obtain nectar to feed on in much the same manner as honey bees. Occasionally, some species, such as yellowjackets, invade honeybee nests and steal honey and/or brood

Thanks.

What's your point?

They do polinate flowers, and their young feed on other bugs. Both are useful.popcorn::

Well, it says "Adult male wasps sometimes visit flowers to obtain nectar to feed on in much the same manner as honey bees." It doesn't say they do any pollinating. They're useless.

That's my position. :goodvibes

this is getting good popcorn::

Should I tell her she is being narrow minded about a fellow creature that is just trying to protect its kids? :lmao: Isn't it doing the same thing she would do, minus the sting/venom part? :rotfl:

We could have a slap fight until the mods close the thread .

You might want to check youtube, just to be safe;)

I don't think they die after one sting. I felt a tickling under my arm and began to scratch it - STUNG! - the human instinct is to pull the arm to the body, which is what I did - STUNG AGAIN!

I don't remember if there was a third sting or not.

Wasps suck. I promise to kill all I can. Hope that helps you in your quest to rid the world of wasps. :)
