Hi Everyone,

We are a family of 6. As 3 of my kids are adults we could do 2 rooms, but would rather not...I think.

We have never been to DC, but are considering taking a long weekend trip in May. Any suggestions are very welcome.

Specifically,

1)we are interested in accomodations for 6. Keep in mind we are used to staying Disney style. Usually Disney villas.

2) if we fly in what options do we have to get from airport to hotels.

3)I use a wheel chair, so any info on HA accessibilty would also be appreciated. (although I will also post on the disability boards here.)

4) I know the Smithsonian is free, but how expensive is eating? Also, how expensive is the Metro.

Thanks so much.

OH this is so my topic! Im a memeber of a family of 5.

OHMI shoreham is a nice hotel. We stayed there for a teachers convention and we had 5 in a room

The metro goes to most airports. If you dont have a ton of luggage its not so bad. We flew in to maryland and too the super shuttle. I believe it was around $25 round trip. We rather enjoyed this option because the driver played "tour guide" and was telling us about all the stuff we saw as we went past. He was also reccomending restraunts.

Eating can go from cheap to OMG! I know we loved the Hard Rock Cafe and got a big burger, fries, a drink and desert for around $10 each. Mc. Donalds is also prevlant in the area (I was STUNNED by the size of there supersized drinks). As far as the metro heres the website: http://www.wmata.com/
We liked the metro. It was very clean and easy to figure out. The staff was great about helping us along the way. I guess my biggest gripe about the metro was the delays. I do know that the metro is accessable. You would just need to check daily to make sure that the elevators are working. I know we found quite a few out of service.

A little know place to visit is the crime and punishment meseum. It was so cooL! All hands on activities and lots of wonderful photo oppurtuinties. It wasnt that expensive and I thought it was alot better than the spy meseum.

thanks for all the helpful info.

Family of Five here. Last year we stayed at the Residence Inn Capitol Hill. It was great! We had a two bedroom unit with a kitchen. They have an indoor pool and offer a great free breakfast for everyone. the best part is that it was in walking distance to all the Smithsonian Museums so we didn't have to use the metro much.

We did use it a few times and it is great to get around, but it was nice not having to use and pay for it each day to see the sights.

I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

I also know Embassy Suites will accomodate larger families.

Good luck to you!

Embassy Suites in Alexandria, VA. The hotel is right across the street from the metro station, you can take the metro right to the hotel if you fly into Regan Airport, metro stops are handicapped accessible either through ramps or elevators. Some of the elevators are sort of hard to find though.

Food is expensive, which is another reason why Embassy Suites is a good idea. You get a free, hot breakfast, with the refrigerators in the rooms you can have food in there. You can have lunch while out sightseeing and then have sandwiches, etc. in your room when you get back.

Old Town Alexandria is really nice, free Trolley to take you there from the King's Street Station (metro stop in Alexandria). Old Town is all "slopped" toward the river so I don't know if that will be an issue with your wheelchair or not though.

I would look for a Residence Inn (Marriott) or Embassy Suites that is very convenient to a Metro Station where you can get a two bedroom suite (which also has a sleep sofa in the living room. As one person mentioned the Embassy Suites in Alexandria; I would also suggest the Residence Inn at Pentagon City, which is one stop from DCA and very close to the station.

There is a place called Washington Suites Georgetown on 25th and Pennsylvania. We reserved there for April.. Bedroom has 2 Queen size beds, full kitchen and living room with big sofa bed. They are large. There is also a Trader Joe's across the street and it includes a free continental breakfast. It was recommended to me by a friend. Not to far from Metro and right on the Circulator route. I have 2 teenagers going with us and wanted to have some separation LOL!

If you want to save some $$$ there is a very decent hotel (not 5 star but decent) right across the Potomac, close to the Reagan airport, its called the Virginia Suites I believe, or possibly the Arlington Suites, they are suites and have a kitchen etc., very reasonably priced. Sorry I can't remember the name, but its one of those names (pretty sure its VS) it should pop up in an expedia search.
