Was this teacher out of line...?

My sister is a principal. Should she not have expelled the third grader who took a switch blade out at the bus stop and was pretending to stab other children with it? :confused3

However, the people that are saying that the bus stop is not within the school's limits of authority, would you expect the school to get involved if it wasn't just words exchanged? What if one of the kids had punched the other?

If a crime is involved off of school property it is a matter for the police and that is who I would take it up with. If I am waiting for the bus to work and someone punches me I don't expect my employer to handle it and that is how I look at for any bus, regardless of its destination. A punch is battery whether thrown by a 7 year old or a 37 year old.

ok sorry i didn't read all of the response to this but...

i was just a few years ago a bus riding student. our bus driver and principal at the beginning of the school year would make it very clear that anytime you were on a bus you were basically on school property, the driver acted as a temporary teacher and any misbehaving would be treated as though it happened in the school. we however never did have a clear explaination of the bus stops. i suppose though if there was an incident the principal would have been the one to handle it.

the teacher really had no right to step in like that (which btw that was a WEIRD punishment; usually it's some form of a lecture :confused3) but what's worse is the mom called the school (right?)

What on Bob's green earth did she think that was going to help? sorry, i had an issue with over "protective" mothers that thought their precious angel from above could do no wrong.

ok student rant over :goodvibes

I am mostly in agreement with you. I do not know the school district policy in regards to who handles the bus stop infractions. I would think it should be the Principal or Dean of Students but in this town perhaps it is handed off to the teachers. I agree that the discipline was over the top

Also, if this Mom is already calling the school over name calling, especially in an incident that was started by her child, this kid is not going to have an easy path once Mom is not able to step in to "defend" her child. Employers are going to have headaches with this one!
