That was the explaination given to me by the Directors of Entertainment for MGM Studios.
The performers were not fired, nor were they hired specifically to perform prior to Fantasmic. Their schedules were just changed so that they were performing elsewhere in the park at different times.
I too do not understand how the pre-show could have a negative effect on vending, but apparently it was enough to convince someone that the situation needed to be changed.
I was simply sharing what I know, and... since nothing was cut- only the where and when changed, it was not a cutback, which was the answer to the OP.
