Was pool hopping EVER allowed?

Yes, it was. Our first on site stay was in 1983and it was allowed...listed as a perk...for some years.

I have never seen an official reason why it was taken away but I think it was just that so many more rooms were added to WDW when they started to build the moderate and value resorts that it was necessary to limit pool hopping so that the more exotic and/or more convenient (to the parks) pools weren't over run by all the thousands of extra on site guests.

It would be nice if you could at least pool hop within your level... Sorta like the moderates can hop at other moderates and deluxes can do the same... I think values already have this perk..with the exception of POP.

That's correct. It went on for quite a few years. When we first stayed at the Carribbean Beach in 1989 - the first moderate hotel on property - we visited the Grand Floridian for lunch. I remember my younger sister used its pool. Back then you could also swim at the Contemporary, Polynesian, Ft Wilderness, and GF beaches too (this stopped in 1997 or 1998, I think).

Stormalong Bay changed the dynamic, I think. It was such a popular pool - day guests would leave Epcot to use it - that poolhopping was eventually prohibited. It did take a few years; someone would have to correct me. Let's say the mid '90s was the last time poolhopping was allowed.

Pool hopping is still allowed for DVC members staying on points. However, we can't pool hop to any of the YC/BC/BCV pools unless we are staying at the BCV. We can't pool hop to AKL pool unless we are staying there. We can pool hop to any other WDW pool, except during certain times of the year when it is prohibited. And, if a pool gets crowded, we also may be asked to leave in order to allow the guests of the resort to use the pool.

DVC members not staying points are not entitled to pool hop.

That's an unusual form of pool hopping, Deb.:teeth: Just kidding.

Also, those of us who are DVC members staying on points are supposed to call ahead to see if it's OK if I remember correctly. We don't pool hop anyway though.

I wonder if pool hopping for DVC members will be a thing of the past soon too as SSR will add so many more DVC rooms?

Sotoalf, I have an old Official Guide from '94. It says that the pools at Y&BC, PO and Dixie Landing were "open to guests of those hotels only."

Yes, pool hopping was once upon a time allowed as long as you were a WDW resort guest but as stated, that is now a thing of the long past. As Deb mentioned only DVC members staying on points are allowed the pool hopping privelige and certain restrictions apply.

They do allow pool hopping however between "Sister Resorts". These being:

POR-R and POFQ may use each other's pools

and

All Star Sports, All Star Music and All Star Movies may all use each other's pools;)

The lifeguards at the resorts can and do ask for your resort ID. If your resort ID does not have the code of the resort pool you are at then you will be booted out. I have seen this done at the Poly and it is quite embarrassing for the dirtballs that have crashed a pool that they do not belong in. Fortunately at the Poly they have been carding folks more and more to keep the offensive people out.

During busy times Storm-a-long Bay has life gurards posted at the entrances & you cannot even get in without your room card. One time my daughter left to go to the bathroom & didn't think of taking her room key. When she came to walk back in, they wouldn't let her. She had to walk over by where I was ...(from the other side of the railing) and call me to go over & explain what happened! So yes, they can tell & do check at times...

Scoootch

I was going to ask if we can pool hop over to POR when we stay at POFQ in October, but you have answered my question. Thanks

Pigby, that you can do. The two resorts are considered sister resorts so pool hopping is allowed.
