Mother/Son Trip and we were planning on us being at Animal Kingdom just half of a day and really want to ride Avatar Flight of Passage, we never have before. Would we best to be at rope drop (they open at 9 a.m. on the day were were planning) and walk really fast to it? What time should we be at Animal Kingdom (we are staying onsite)?

Or should I switch my plans to go on AK early entry day on Saturday and try to switch all my fast passes around? Would we have a better chance to get on the ride if we go on the early entry day without a Fastpass?

Get to the park 50-60 min. early.
(Same answer for AM Extra Magic Hour day.)

Also, keep trying to book FPs.

So I should not switch to early entry day at AK? Do people have a better chance to not wait quite as long on early entry day at AK? Or just get there an hour earlier on regular entry day at Animal Kingdom and keep checking FastPass?

Watch for the park to change the schedule to open an hour earlier in the few weeks before you arrive. They will then add more fast passes, and if you are quick you can snag FoP. If that doesn’t happen, no worries. Just arrive 70 minutes before scheduled opening and you should be walking off the ride at about park opening time, because they are going to let you in early.

My meaning was to arrive 50-60 min. early on both a "regular hours" day and/or an AM EMH day.
Arrive EARLY.

And, keep trying to book FPs.

The wait is normally far less at the end of the day. They will post inflated wait times. Morning EMH does not change anything for FOP except the wait time will be 2hr+ when the park opens for regular guests. If you are not in the stampede at rope drop, you will wait at least 100 min.

First, :welcome: to DISboards!

You will hear two strategies for FoP, rope drop or end of the day. I am a morning person so I have done rope drop. The other alternative is to get in line a few minutes before park closing.

For rope drop I would suggest you be at the park at 7:30am for a regular 9am opening to be near the front of the line that will head to FoP. They will begin letting folks through the tapstiles sometime after 8am. The crowd will head towards Pandora and be held at a rope just past Tiffins. I did not rush my walk but was still fairly near the front of the crowd at the rope. At my visit in July they dropped the rope early, just after 8:30am, and the Cast Members slowly walked the crowd down the path into Pandora and onto FoP. I was back out in Pandora after riding FoP by 8:57am and headed right to Navi River. I walked right on Navi River and was back out in Pandora by 9:08am. I went on to do ITTBAB, Dinosaur, A FP for the Safari, and was third in line for an early lunch at Flametree BBQ opening at 11am. A productive morning at AK.

If you decide to take advantage of morning Extra Magic hours I would suggest planning to be at the park about 60 minutes early but I have not personally tested that timing.

Keep checking for a FP. They do become available. If the hours exchange, more FPs often are available in those new hours.
As mentioned, if you plan to RD, show up at least 45 minutes before the park opens. If you show up 15 minutes before, FoP most likely will already be 60-90 minutes wait by the time you get there.

We arrived at DAK at its EMH opening 8am. Still waited 90 mins in the hot sun with a switchback all the way to Africa. My dad went back the next day on a non EMH day but showed up 1 hr before the park opening. Before the open was official he was being led into the inside of the queue and had a short wait.

When people say get there 1 hr before the park opens get there 1 hr before the park opens. You're less likely to wait out in the heat for one and for another you won't be wasting valuable park time.

The other option if you don't want to wake up super early and aren't staying the whole day is the thought that FOP kinda gets a little better from 1-3 so 60 minutes instead of 90+. The stand by does have things to see do (from what I've read on other reviews)

I've done both rope drop and just before the park closes and much prefer just before the park closes - it is especially fun to walk out through an empty Pandora at night when you are done.

I'm going to piggyback this post. There are 7 in our group, but only 3 are going to ride FoP. We could not get FP, as expected, see nice it is so early in our trip. We will be at AK on Saturday, Nov. 24, after Thanksgiving. It is an EMH day with an 8am/9am opening. Last year, AK was apparently open until 10 pm, with an AM emh also, so my projected crowd calendar continued that projection for this year. We will not be switching days with everything else already planned out and secured so well.

If they do expand the hours, my guess is that it would extend later into the evening, and this would be our preferred FP time slot for FoP while doing Navi during EMH in the morning, then making our way around through Africa, Asia, etc, then back to Pandora after Rivers of Light. If not, then the party of three will plan to arrive about 90 minutes prior to opening for RD.

If they do extend the hours, obviously, I want to snag those fastpasses. So, is there a particular best time of day, day of week, day of month, etc to monitor the park hours? If/when the park hours do get extended, do the fastpasses for those new hours become available right away, or the next day, etc?

Thanks!!

1. Nope.
2. Pretty much.

Planning for rope drop... If we want to go on Na’vi can we also enter the area early or is it only for persons wanting FOP?

No, line up on the left of the walkway head left towards Navi River when you get into Pandora. 99% of the crowd will veer to the right towards FoP. What I don't know is how early they start running Navi River. If they drop the rope well before the official opening time I don't know if they start running Navi River right away. I have always done FoP first and it has been at or slightly after opening time by the time I got to Navi River.

It took a lot of work to get one for FOP but I was successful after I kept trying. I still don’t have one for Slinky Dog though. ☹️
