Was Disney Food always such a sodium-fest?

Just there and didn't notice any restaurants that had overly salted food. Know that some people are more aware of 'salt' in food than others. I read that salt is added to give more flavor - just like in processed foods you buy in the grocery - soups, boxed dinners, etc.
Salt is a great flavor enhanced when used correctly. Not too much and not too little.

The only place Ive eaten at WDW and thought food was too salty was at the Yachtsman on 3 different tries.

Once upon a time I would have said No but 14 months ago I gave up the salt shaker completely even for cooking, Now I can taste the saltiness of the food.

The only food item I have regularly had a problem with is the roast turkey at the Port Orleans Riverside food court. It has the potential to be so good, but the turkey tastes like pure salt, and I do not avoid salt at home.

I almost never eat processed food. I make my own chicken stock with zero salt. I do the same thing with dried beans that I cook. As we often share food with a couple of neighbors who truly must have salt free food for serious health issues I usually do not cook with salt at all.

But the only thing that I’ve found to be too salty at WDW is the popcorn - and then only sometimes. And I really cannot eat overly salted food at all.

But my dh and I probably tend to eat simpler foods like salads most of the time.

We also found food at WDW to be rather salty, sometimes extremely so.

At home, the only things we use salt for are baking if it is part of the recipe since sometimes the chemistry requires it. Any other recipe that calls for it and we omit it. We do not add it to anything [the last time my salt shaker was used was over a year ago when we made warm salt water to gargle for a sore throat] - the salt and pepper shakers don't even get taken out of the cabinet.

I haven't really found the food at WDW to be any more salty than eating out. Certainly not salty to the point where food is inedible or all you can taste is salt.

Well good, I need more salt in my diet. I run and clearly don't get enough from my regular food intake. Sorry you felt it was too salty though, OP.

I am one of those people who salt food before even trying it. (i know, I know) the only thing i find waaaaay too salty is the popcorn, I can barely stomach it. I will say after a couple of days at DW, I insist on salads and anything green.

I live a keto lifestyle and because of this, I need to supplement with extra salt. I have not found anything at Disney to be overly salty (except like the PP - the popcorn!). I agree that your sensitivity to the taste is linked to how much you eat it on a regular basis. Please be aware that recent studies have found that there is no correlation between higher salt intake levels and a negative health outcomes UNLESS you have hypertension or some other medical condition affected by sodium. Less salt is not always healthier - it depends on your individual circumstances.

I've never had a problem.

And we don't salt food at our house. And we don't eat processed foods. (Most of them have gluten, which is a big no no for me.)

I would say something. Maybe something happened to the meal.

Lol, I certainly don’t need health advice. I don’t add salt to my food at home and the American diet is waaay too high in sodium in general. I don’t go out of my way to avoid sodium for any medical reason. I just try to eat a whole food diet because it makes me feel good and look good. The food here makes me feel bloated and gross.

Please don't feel I am trying to give you, in particular, health advice. I know you said nothing of the sort. I just felt a few posters implied lower sodium was healthier and wanted to clarify for anyone who might still be reading what recent studies have said. That's all! :-)

I did mention it to the servers but there wasn’t a special problem with the food, I don’t think.

I’m glad you mentioned it. I’m surprised they didn’t yet to help if you wanted to finish your meals but the taste was too bad to do so.

Unless you could compare the same dish (as my aunt and cousin could) it’s hard to tell if it’s you or the dish, though.

I haven't noticed any changes, but I salt ramen (the packaged kind that is basically already all salt) so I'm probably not the best judge.

Yes, exactly. Perhaps those that eat extremely healthy and RARELY eat out at home are more sensitive to salt than the rest who do eat out occasionally? I personally haven't had an issue (during my trip last month) with any of the dishes being too salty. Not a single issue. I ate at restaurants such as: The Wave, Artist Point, Cali Grill, Tiffins. I've also eaten a the LTT and Garden Grill last trip and didnt have problems. Maybe because i do eat out at home on occasion? But I think its definitely a personal issue though. Some are more sensitive to it and are constantly complaining when eating out. And some, like myself, aren't.

Here's something else to consider though....I work in the nutrition dept in a hospital. As you know, hospital food is always pretty bland, and NEVER loaded with sodium....not at our hospital in Toronto anyway. But there's always a handful of patients who complain to us about the food being too salty. Makes me laugh. Anyway, after some digging we found out that its most likely the medication they're on that messes with their tastes buds a bit. Before the meds, they had no issues....after taking the meds, they suddenly found everything salty. My mom went through this too.

Just something to think about.

Only once have I ever had a meal that was saltier than the meals at WDW, and it just so happened to be in FL as well (Boca Raton). For the life of me, I can't explain why the chefs feel they need to add so much salt, or why anyone would ever think that tastes good! One buffet probably exceeds your daily recommended salt intake.

We live in an area where good restaurants are hard to find. Not only is the food bland here, but the hottest thing is Italian dressing. Salt and spice are to taste. Depending on what you are accustomed to in your hometown, it could go either way.

I love watching people fight about this stuff. It's personal taste. Salt and fat makes things taste good to the typical american palate so restaurants are going to use them to make their stuff taste good. I eat a moderately healthy diet, mostly protein and veggies with a fruit and a yogurt a day and only occasional starchy carbs and I don't overly salt things (as in I only rarely use it at the table) but I do salt things to taste as I cook them and generally follow what the recipe says (although certain people use too much and I cut back). I don't find WDW food to be overly salty but I do find it a bit saltier than what I cook at home (like most restaurant food) but it tastes good to me. I do find myself craving salad and fresh veggies there but that is probably because they are a bit harder to find than at home, when I include them with every meal. I think i am probably also craving the water content of those things too.
