Wart removal

Does anyone have any experience with this. My son (4years) has a wart on his finger. We had his ped look at it a few months ago and she said to leave it alone unless it got bigger. Well it got bigger so she told us to put Duofilm on it (it's an OTC medicine).

We used it a few times and it seemed to be getting smaller. Then I noticed that the skin around the wart was sort of peeling away. Like the medicine was eating away at it. And my son started saying that it was hurting--it never hurt before. So, I've stopped using this stuff. But, my DH says that we should still use it because he wants it gone. Is this what's supposed to happen when we use this type of medicine?

Yes, the Duofilm is an acid that gradually breaks down the wart. Problem is that you have to use it faithfully for WEEKS!! My son had his warts for awhile before we tried to treat them and the OTC wart medications never worked.

We ended up going to the dermatologist who "froze" them off. It kind of hurt my son when he did it, but it was quick and over with.

Ok, don't laugh but this REALLY works---duct tape, that grey heavy duty tape. Put some over the wart (enough to cover it and attach firmly to the surrounding skin) and leave it on there. Re-apply as necessary. A friend's DD had a terrible problem with warts and tried everything from Compound W to having the dr freeze them off, use acid on them, everything. The dr gave her this idea. He said some patients had heard about it and tried it and it worked. She did and her DD hasn't had a wart since.

I get warts on my hands every few months and I've had good luck with Compound W's "freezing" product.

Having the doctor freeze them in the office is effective, but expensive. One of my sons used duofilm and, as has been mentioned, it works VERY slowly.

Freezing them at home is a little painful, I'm sure your son won't enjoy the procedure, but it is efficient and inexpensive! I should also say that it's no more painful at home than in the doctor's office.

Hmm, OK well maybe I'll just wipe off any excess that gets on his skin. If that doesn't work, I'll try the duct-tape. And I did see the OTC freeze-off stuff, but I'm afraid to try that myself. If all else fails, we'll go to the derm.

My dermatologist recommended Duofilm AND duct tape (you let the Duofilm dry and then cover with duct tape), and it worked like a charm. It does take a while, but frankly the dermatologist's office methods weren't working so I didn't care how long it took as long as it worked.

Maybe I'll try that. I don't like the covers that come with the duofilm. They don't stay on very well and they leave a sticky, yucky residue. Does the duct tape do that?

ETA: Those using duofilm, how often were you putting it on? Once or twice a day?

Somebody on these boards once suggested covering the wart with clear nail polish, sanding away the dead skin with an emery board every night and then applying a fresh coat of nail polish. I tried it with the wart on the bottom of my daughter's foot. It took about two months, but it worked! We had tried the over the counter freeze it off stuff, which did nothing, and duct tape, which kept falling off.

Yes, you should be careful to apply the duo-film only onto the actual wart.

I didn't know this, and I put a bunch on, and then put a band-aid over it before it had dried.... Man, it looked like I had applied super-glue... Uggghhh!!!

Perhaps using the little discs instead????

I do not use the little adhesive covers. I use a normal band-aid.

I have been treating a plantars wart on the side of my DS arch on his foot with the Duofilm. And, it is helping, but has not completely finished the job yet.

And, for any parents out there who are worried about bandaides or duct-tape falling off. I know the BEST bandages... They stay on my DS until I peel them off. I am talking swimming, sandbox, whatever....

They make several types, it has to be the 'Comfort' strips.

They are an ultra-thin and soft and velvety, latex-free, bandage. The absorbant pad is a square completely surrounded by the adhesive bandage (not open at the sides) to form a complete seal.

I did it twice a day...after my shower in the morning, and before bed at night. I washed the area thoroughly before applying the duofilm, and sometimes I used a pumice to get rid of the dead skin on top. The duct tape didn't leave any residue that I noticed.

My 14 y.o. had one wart on his thumb, then all of a sudden there were three! We tried the OTC treatments, and they didn't work.

Since he already has a dermatologist treating him for acne, we had her take a look during one of his check ups.

She said the OTC stuff rarely works, she said it doesn't get cold enough (the freeze away type)

Before she sprayed the warts with the freezer thingy, she scraped the top of the warts with a razor looking thing to get off the dead skin cells. Then she sprayed like crazy!

The warts developed into huge ugly look blisters (she warned us that they would blister before hand) and it took at least a week and half for them to burst and then heal.

But now they are all gone!

She said it could take several treatments, but one was all he needed.

My now 6 year old son had nasty warts on his foot and hand and since I'd had mine burned off at about that age I didn't want to go that route. The duct tape works but it takes a LONG time! I did a search on the internet and found a wart remover that worked and worked very fast with no pain and in 2 years they haven't come back. It's called Amoils heal warts and it really did help. I used it on a plantar wart I had on my heal and it's gone as well.

I can not beleive I found this thread. We have been dealing with a palnters wart on my DS's foot for about a month now. It is very painful for him. We took him to the doctor and they froze it off. It came back twice as big in about a week. We have been using some prescription meds my mom gave us which is similar to Compound W. We have been using this now for a week and a half. In using this you can see just how huge this sucker is. You know these warts grow in and by the time you know you have them they are rather big. I have made an appointment to see a dermatolgist but the quickest they could see him is 12/7!! We figured the normaly family doctor did not know how to remove the wart properly. I am at a loss at what to do because it is on this big toe. He is very activity in sports and this is really causing him a lot of pain. To beat it all my insurance denied the claim because they said it was cosmetic and not necessary! I could not believe that one.

Jsme, hopefully one of these methods will your for your son. I can't believe the insurance won't pay for it. How is it cosmetic if it's on the bottom of his foot? On a finger, I can understand, but it's causing pain. That's just not right.

The dermatologists in our area won't even see you for a wart problem unless you have tried this first!!!!!!!

My dd had plantars warts a couple of years ago. We tried all of the OTC methods you have mentioned and they didn't work. We went to the dermatologist and he first put a stronger version of the compound W acid stuff and put a tight bandage on it. We had to leave it that way for three hours, no more no less. It was gross. He then saw her again 1 week later and found a small piece that was left and froze that one off. We haven't had a problem since.

All I know the family doctor thought he had froze it all off but the sucker came back and it is huge. It is about 1/5 the size of his big toe. We have been using the prescription medicine my mom had for about 2 weeks now and it is eating away at it. We bandage it after a treatment. I just hope that the thing will come off soon!! Or at the least the Dermatolgist can get it all off.
