Some of you may have heard this quote before, but wanted to list it here!
“Every morning in Africa, an antelope wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion, or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest antelope, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or an antelope – when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.” – African Proverb

Good Morning Warriors And thanks for all the warm welcomes.

Jim - I hope the move went well at DW's business, and I hope the back is feeling better.

Bookwood & Carrie - Goodluck at the Flying Pig. I hope you are able to stay dry. The weather doesn't look promising for tomorrow.

Stan - Congratulation on the PR.

Kathy - Congratulation on the new adoptive granddaughter. Watching little ones can wear anyone out.

Thinks have been going pretty well training wise for me. I got a new toy in the mail Wednesday. I bought a Garmin 305. I think it is really going to help with my training. I wore it Wednesday for my 4 1/2 mile walk and then on Friday for my 8 mile long walk. I was able to average a 16:02 mile for my 8 mile walk which is real close to the pace I would like to maintain at the half. I even included a hill again this week. The only down side is I developed a couple of blisters. They both occurred on the edge of where I had placed my moleskin's. I may need to use a bigger piece so it is less likely to shift as I walk.

Life around the house has been hectic. Last Wednesday, mom went into the hospital with an infection and being worn down and last Saturday we transferred her to a nursing home to build her strength back up. She had a stroke about a year and half ago and suffers from moderate Alzheimer. So, I've been trying to get out to the nursing home when I can. She is improving and hopefully will be able to get home soon.

Happy Saturday Warriors!!!

I went for a 50 (ok, ok, actually 49.4) mile bike ride this morning. I was feeling very puffy & full of myself, when, as I was heading back into town, I noticed another cyclist about 1/2 mile ahead of me.

I saw he was not going as fast as I, so I tried to catch up to him. As I closed on him I noticed his bike was loaded down with cruising packs on his rear rack (so I had BETTER be going faster than him !!! ). I caught up with him after a few minutes and we began to talk a bit as the high speed traffic repeatedly tried to kill me.

So I asked where he was coming from. His answer? "San Diego"............... wha..........?? 2200 freakin' miles?? He said he was with his DW and a few others (but had decided to come into St Augustine a day early), had been pedaling for 2 months, and had (now get this..............) already put in about 62 miles so far today (& had about 10 to go......).

And did I mention this guy was about 15 years OLDER than I???? Really nice guy. I gave him directions & warned him about the area drivers that have NO respect for cyclists & left him for the rest of my ride.

I REALLY have a lot of work to do............................. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Finally went out for a walk. My DH and I did 3.22 miles. :cool1:
The last time I walked it was on April 4th for 8 miles. The spinning on the exerciser did help.

Hope everyone is doing well

Kathy

Good Sunday morning Warriors!
Hoping the morning has greete you with sunshine and happines!!:thumbsup2

Jim: Great story and thanks for sharing it. Kinda puts things in perspective right? Especially how our own worlds can have their own perspectives. Cool that this guy was traveling by bike, very neat - but remember he was cruising and relaxing (a bit) and seeing the sites. You had a different purpose in mind and most likely doing it for speed and miles. Hope you back is doing well.

Jeremy: I love my Garmin, I have a 405. My training became so much more consistant and better after I got one. I am sure you will find it to be a good training partner and friend. I love my "garmi". Blisters will happen and I am sure you starting to realize this to be true. The more miles and time you spend in your shoes, blister can "pop up" :lmao:. Yes, moleskin helps and have you tried lathering with body glide. Hopefully you are not wearing cotton socks as cotton typically = blisters and or chaffing. Sorry to hear about your Mother's health and I hope it gets better.

Kathy: I am sure it felt good to get out there again

FLYING PIG PEOPLE!!! - hoping you had a great race and tell us all about it! :cheer2:

AFM: got up and out the door pretty early around 7am. 6 miles for today. Summer has pretty much arrived and the humidity and heat are ramping up so that means trying to get out there before the sun gets too high in the sky.
Been purging myself of some bad things in my life but keeping up with my miles and days. Right now I am not really suffering from any bad aches or pains and for that I am truely greatful. I will start to ramp up miles soon as the Disneyland Half Marathon gets closer.

Have a good day everyon!

Tracy

No, I'm not wearing cotton socks. I was using Sports Wax with cheap Wal-Mart wicking socks. I'm now using DryMax Socks. They recommend not using any sort of body glide, power type thing with the socks. I may experiment with using both this week. I just don't have that many training day left to do much experimenting and none of them are long distances. Mom is continuing to improve, albeit slowly. Don't know if she'll get home this week or not.

Hi Warriors! Another weekend another half. Got the Columbus Distance Half done on Saturday. It was a warmer, rainy kind of event. Not bad, just playing in the puddles.

Jim, my wha a story. It is amazing that someone would take a trip like that.

Sorry for the drivers who just insist on playing chicken with the bicycles. Happens all around here and drivers insist that bikes belong on sidewalks even that it is against the law here to be on the sidewalk riding your bike.

Hope everyone is doing well with getting steps and moving around.

Tracy, with the heat season coming, I guess this would be your off time for training. Good luck finding cool time. Good for you purging the bad and moving forward with the good. Glad you can keep moving along for yourself.

Hi Warriors!!!!

I too was in the wet and humid Columbus Half. While it wasn't my best time due to conditions and not doing my normal training I had a really good time. I got to see Lily and chat for a few and that made my day!! Haven't run since Saturday, but did get in 3.5 miles of walking yesterday. Getting back after it today I hope.

Chris

Hi Warriors!

Lily and Chris: Congrats on another half!

Tracy: Stay cool out there - I never understand how people in hot climates train through the hot summer! Even in Seattle, I melt if I run after 9:00 in the summer, and it rarely gets above 75 here!

Jim: That is a great story!

As for me, I'm actually RUNNING again! I finally broke down and bought a maternity running skirt from runningskirts.com. In addition to being ADORABLE, it also has a supportive belly band that has completely eliminated my back and belly pain while running. I ran about 4 of my 6 miles on Saturday and I had no back pain at all, afterwards! It's such a great feeling. I've been wearing it for pretty much everything, now, including my short walks with the dogs, and it's made such a difference. Too bad they only make it in two colors, or else I would have a new running skirt collection... :rolleyes1

I have my 10 miler coming up on Saturday, so we'll see how that one goes...

Sarah - Love that the new skirt does so much for you! Awesome!

Lily & Stan - Great job in COlumbus! Soogy conditions do add more adventure to teh race. :upsidedow

Jeremy - Congrats on teh Garmin! it will be your new best friend! Is there somethign in your shoe rubbing? Can you see any worn spots on the insole? If so, I have a product I foudn that may help. Let em know. So sorry about your mom. It was hard enough for em to deal with a grandmaother with az. :-( I can't imagine.

Kathy - COngrats on getting out again! Can't wait to hear about your first visit with your new granddaughter!

Jim - When I reconnected with my old roommmate, she sent me a messgae to kept up. Told me about runnign a 5K. I skimmed after that, as my head was already writing a reply. Told her about my marathons and how she should try a half and such. WIsh I had read mor futher. She was a 4-time IM at the time. :rolleyes1 Ooops. Don't ya' love those puffed up moments? :p Can't imagine riding 2200 miles. :scared1: BTW - I think your 50-miler was awesome! You can be puffed up with me! ;)

Tracy - Glad you will have a race on your schedule! I dont' have another scheduled until the end of June and feel lost now. :guilty:

Got to see Pam and Barb at Flying Pig! Short visit, but great to see them! Also got some quality time with aladdinsgirl adn skfulkers fro those that may remember them. Wonderful! Pi was HILLY and WET. There was a flash to bang with less than 5 secods 15 min before the race. I was just sure it was going to be canceled. I was also sure it was because I bought a finisher's hat at the expo. :scared1: The announced that they were workign with the NWS asn police and fire, though, adn it was just "random strikes" :scared1: and the race would go on. Luckily, that was teh last of the lightning. It was not the last of teh rain, though.

Beautiful course. Really good support ont he course, even in the rain, great friends and my body did ok. I realized a few days before the race that, although I had been doing great witht eh swim and teh ride, I had not run sinc ea half 3 weeks before. :headache: I *almost* wish I had not done as well as I did for Pig so I would have learned a lesson. :upsidedow Need to do better now. Time to really focus on tri season coming. Yay!

PS - Tracy had a great idea to keep track of everyone's races fro teh month so we can virtually cheer fro our Warrior friends racing.

I will try to post soon after Tarcy starts the thread each month an dlist all teh races we have been told. So, if you could try to let us know each month,we will get you on the list. :goodvibes

Good Afternoon Warriors!!!

I dragged my slow lazy a** to the pool this morning & did a 1,000 meter sprint workout. Boy, I REALLY get gassed in the pool!! I worked so hard that I was actually sweating after a pool workout. Hopefully it will pay off in the long run.

I then did a 21 mile bike ride afterwards. I had to cut it short because, in a fit of terrible motor skills, I fumbled a water bottle & it slid down a storm drain. Half my fluids gone in a second.

Plus, it was windy. And HOT. And did I mention it was Windy & HOT!!??

Rain is due this afternoon. Maybe if it gets a bit cooler I may try a small run this evening.

FYI - No races this month. It's basically 5k & Tri season in Florida now. No long races until the fall. Too hot.

Happy Wednesday Warriors!

I've been down and out with yet ANOTHER bout of bronchitis. But at least I caught it early this time. I was able to continue working out to an extent instead of just sitting on the couch! Today is my last day on medication! :woohoo:

As for upcoming races, I am doing Bay to Breakers in SF on May 16 and a local 5k, No Excuses, in Sacramento on 5/31. That's it for May. And then the tri's start up in June. I can't wait!

Happy training!

Hi All
Just a mid week check in. I'm solidly in taper at this point. But, even though my miles have been decreasing, I'm trying to keep the intensity up. On Monday, I did intervals, combining 3 minutes of walking with 1 minute of slow running. Did 8 repititions with a 1/2 mile warm up and cool down. After Cleveland, I'm hoping to springboard that into a c25k. Right now, I planning on doing the conservative plan on http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/Programs/conservative_program.htm starting in month 3 2 days a week combined with the long run in the Marathoning for mortals Walk/Run plan with the goal on being able to run half an hour with at most 1 or 2 walk breaks and do a fall Half Marathon with a walk/run. Does that seem like too ambitious of a goal?

Today, I focused on a steady to improving negative splits for 3 miles of all walking (since I am signed up in the walking division in clevelan). Other than 1 1/2 mile of daydreaming I did very well the split times from my Garmin show
Lap Time Dist Pace
1 00:08:22 0.50 16:45
2 00:07:49 0.50 15:39
3 00:07:39 0.50 15:19
4 00:08:01 0.50 16:02
5 00:07:35 0.50 15:10
6 00:07:23 0.50 14:47
7 00:00:43 0.04 16:11

I have my Garmin set for half mile auto laps because that's what the markings on the trail I walk are so I'm used to looking at half mile times and I gives a decent proxy for current pace (which seems to bounce all over the place on the Garmin). The first half mile was a warmup.

Carrie, As far as my insoles go, when I tried Dr. Scholls Gel insoles I completely wore out the area right over the ball of my foot very quickly. I've since switch to the Dr. Scholls big and tall insoles and they seem to be performing well. I just need to be sure the arch support is directly over my arch and not too far forward or backward.

Good afternoon Warriors,

Hello from warm & sunny central IL. Just wanted to let y'all know I became a marathoner this past Saturday. I ran the Il marathon in Champaign, IL. Did it in just over 5 hours by my Garmin time. I'm still pretty pumped up about it & have the desire to do another one.

I guess I am doing another one (Goofy challenge) in 2011. I have done a couple of race reoprts on my blog, the Kentucky Derby mini marathon & my marathon last Saturday. If you would like to read them, you can find them at http://bloomingtonrunner.blogspot.com.

I hope everybody's injuries are healing and your training is going well. :cool1:

Howdy folks!!

A nice breezy Florida day today. It looked like it might rain, but it held off.

42 miles on the bike this morning. A nice comfy (somewhat slow) ride, but nobody really tried to kill me, so that's a plus!!

Good Thursday Warriors...

Jeremy, looks like you are doing a good job, I am a racewalker first and a jogger second and it seems like you are working your way into things. Take it easy. If you start experiencing aches/pains then slow it back down.
How is your Mom doing?

Lily, Nope summer = training for Disneyland this year, otherwise it would have a 5k a month at least. So, out in the Florida Sun I go. Of course I am trying to play it smart. :)

Chris, BUDDY!! Hoping you are "getting back in it" as you have a Half Marathon at Disneyland coming up!:rotfl:

Sarah, Glad the skirt is making it comfortable to get out there and run! Fabulous! Yep, its warm here in South FLA with a high today of 92. But like anyway, if you play it smart and prepare it can be done and only makes you stronger!!!

Carrie, Congrats on the PIG!:thumbsup2 also thanks for doing the Warrior race tracking!

Jim, Great Pool workout and I always find it interesting when you sweat from a pool workout.

Stan, CONGRATULATIONS on becoming a marathoner!! :cool1::cheer2::woohoo:

AFM - Things are moving along nicely. Today, as some of you know, is my regular miles day. Today was 4 miles and in between the lightening alarms going off, I got er done! We got new scrub at work and I am loving wearing a size smaller, nothing like the little things in life!!

Stan, congratulations on your becoming a marathoner! Great job! I cannot believe you did KY too! Sorry I missed you. I was waaaaayyyy behind you. Great pace you had for that one.

Sarah, glad you've found the running skirts to help you. I would have never thought that the skirt would give that much support.

Jeremy, you're doing Cleveland's event? Really. Darn, I'll miss you there, I would have cheered, if we were were in town. Where do you do your training that has markers for half miles? I train on the Towpath with mile markers. Seems like you've got a good plan worked out for yourself. Hope you can figure out the blister thing.

Carrie, good job getting the Pig done! Hope your tri training goes well.

Jim, good going on the pool w/o and biking. What a machine.

Michelle, sorry about being sick. Glad you seemed to have caught it before it got out of control.

Tracy, yay for the smaller size! We have less high heat time here and while I do get out in it, I certainly do not enjoy training in it. I don't envy your high heat training for DL.

It's been a bit of an emotional time for us here. DH has been diagnosed with prostate cancer. He's had the last test and all info is being sent to Cleve Clinic where he'll be consulting with a doc there as far as procedure. That's the bad news. Good news seems that it looks like it is contained in the gland so prognosis is good. Another bump in the road. I walk/run to relieve stress. Some moments I think there is not enough miles these days.

Leaving in the a.m. for a drive to Indianapolis mini 500 half on Saturday. There are other WISH Team members going to be there and we will have a mini meet. Happy training Warriors!

Hi Warriors!!!

I'm back at it and have done a 5 mile and 3 mile run. Also getting in some walking 2-3 miles a day. Been eating better the last week and a half and it's really showing in how I feel when I run. Not to mention the warmer weather.

Everybody signed up for their Disney races? Disneyland is at 70% and Disney World in January is now at 50%. Better get moving......

Jim - Good to hear your enjoying your bike riding.

Tracy - Mom is doing well, yesterday dad went to the doctor and he said the next time he saw mom he would release her from the nursing home (barring any unforeseen problem).

I'm looking at that conservative c25k to hopefully avoid overdoing it. They plan is less structured than Coolrunning c25k but the basic idea is each week you do do 3 30min workout and as you progress replace 2 minutes of walking with 2 minutes of running each week with a near repeat week every 4th week. But it leaves it up to you to decide how long each walk and run cycle need to by. I plan on keeping my half mile warmup walk and half mile cooldown walk so all total it will be between 45min. and 1 hour 2 days a week.

Lily - I live in knox county and do the vast majority of my training on the Kokosing Gap Trail It is a very nice 14 mile long paved rail/trail. I live about a mile from the Mount Vernon end of the trail but drive to different parts of the trail to get some variety into may workout. They have markers every 1/2 mile (more or less, there are a couple that the garmin says are .03 - .04 of a mile off. )

Chris - Good luck getting back started.

Tomorrow is my last long (only 5 mile) training before Cleveland I haven't decided what pace I want to go at. I'm planning on playing that by ear but leaning toward a slow pace. My feet are doing better and the reduced milage is allowing the blisters to finish healing.

ETA: went out this morning and did my 5 mile training walk. I ended up doing it at a fairly slow pace. I averaged a 16:45 mile. My feet held up well. So now, I just need to decide of final race strategy. Right now, my biggest fear is starting too fast and fading too much at the end.
