so, Michelle and Jeremy - How did you guys do?? Give us some details!!!

The Space Shuttle Launch was amazing!! I have lived in South FL all my life and I can see the lift offs (puffs of smoke) from my house, but never saw one live and in person. I picked a park that is the closest you can get without buying a ticket for on property. Was about 14 miles straight across from the launch pad. Got there pretty early, or at least what I thought was early. The two brothers I sat next too had been there since 8am and I got there around 10:45am. The place just filled up more and more until the 2:20pm launch time. The one brother was getting updated on his phone so I knew what was going on. I had all my fingers/toes/legs and arms crossed that nothing would go wrong and there would not be any utterings of the word "scrub". With the tminus 9 minutes started on time - all seemed right and then it kept going unitl 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and lift off of the Space Shuttle Atlantis and its last official mission to the ISS. What and incredible experience!! Breathtaking!!

Went over to Disney which took about 2 1/2 hours and should have taken 1 hour. That is how packed it was!!
Spent the evening eating over at DTD and visiting with an old HS friend. Saturday I suprised my Mom for her birthday. My Dad and her are spending the weekend with the Mouse. Parked at Boardwalk and walked over to HS and SURPRISE!! Got some TSM in and headed over to EPCOT for a few things and then home. A nice mini vacation and a Disney World Fix. Life is good!

Had a good 5.25 miles today. Serious DL Half training will start in a few weeks.

Tracy - Good to hear the shuttle launch was exciting. The closest I've ever come to seeing a shuttle launch is from US. I was out by the lake and saw this big line of smoke. People then told me that was the shuttle.

Thanks for the encouragment everyone. I took Sarah's advice and wore my HRM. It was very useful at letting me know when to slow down a little.


Most everything went well this weekend (for the most part). Yesterday, got a little bit of a late start because the friend who was driving me had to work in the morning. He's self employed as a lock smith and right now, he can use any work he can get. We arrived in Cleveland about 4:30. I picked up my bib quickly and easily. And then went over to the expo. I picked up my goodie shirt and goodie bag. It had an OK supply of stuff. A nice tech shirt, 2 pieces of candy, several granola bars, sun screen, Gold bond powder and a few other things I can't remember. On the way out of the expo, I stopped back at registration and ran into Frank (firedancer). It was good to be able to talk to him and put a face with a name. Me and my friend decided to eat dinner at Olive Garden and then stopped at Half Price Books so he could grab some reading material before heading to another friends house to go to bed.

After a too short nights sleep,I got up at 5:00 to eat breakfast and get ready to go to the race. We arrived at the race about 6:30 which game me a good amount of time. The race started mostly on time at 7:00, and I crossed the start line at 7:07. The first mile went relative uneventfully was keeping a good pace 16:08 and felt good. My first minor mistake happened in first half of mile 2. I look down at my watch and see that I'm walking at a 14:00 pace (walking with a group I thought was going slower than that). Once I noticed it I slowed down closer to what I was planning. Course support was very good. I didn't need all of the water I was carrying with me. The crowd support was a bit spotty though. The best crowd support was in a new part of Cleveland (Tremont) for the marathon at mile 3-5 and they had several parties going on and great crowd support even for us back of the packers. At the 10K mat look at my watch and it was 1:38, My 10K time last fall was 1:37:07 with a sprint to the finish and today was all walking. Around mile 7 I stopped briefly with the thought of going to the restroom but they were all full so I kept going. I found an empty portapot at mile 9 and grabbed it. I probably lost about minute there. Miles 10.5 to about 12 are a long half way steep hill. At the top of the hill even though my feet were killing me, I decided to alternate between regular walking and fast walking (I signed up in the walking division and wanted to walk the entire way even if other people weren't). The fast walking actually felt pretty good in short burst because it used a slightly different set of muscles. When I rounded the final corner to the finish I walked as fast as I could to the finish. I finish with a clock time of about 3:34 and I stopped my Garmin at 3:27:55 and 13.21 miles. My goal was between 3:30 and 3:45 so I beat that by a little bit.

The biggest down side right now is that they don't have official results up for me yet (I was hoping to get those results before posting). I've email the race officials so hopefully in a couple of days I will get results. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice and encouragement. You really help me do my best.

Tracy - Glad you had such a great weekend. So jealous that you go to see th elaunch (and tha tyou can just drive to WDW for the weekend)!

Ran 8 miles Sunday and biked 15 yesterday. That gives me the evening of to get new shoes. :p

I finally finished the C25K program! :cool1: I'm still not running 5K in 30 minutes but I completed the program. Today I'm starting a 10K training program. I'm pretty excited to move forward!

Jeremy - Nice report & congratulations on your accomplishment!!

AFM - I ran about 3.2 miles on Saturday morning & biked about 25 yesterday.

I felt tired both days. Bleh. I was hoping to get a really loooooong ride in yesterday, but about 7-8 miles into it, I knew that was not going to happen. Maybe it's because I started out going into the winds. Anyways I slogged through 25.

At work today, back at it tomorrow.
 
Amanda :cheer2::banana::cool1::yay: they are your personal cheerleaders! Massive congratulations on graduating the programme! That proves your commitment and drive so onwards to the 10k we go. Just make sure you stop and praise yourself for all of that hard work! Thrilled to have you here!

Jim as i've been reading all about positive self talk- tell me one good thing about your ride!?!?! Ha ha how annoying am i going to get :)

Carrie what new shoes? Runners? well deserved either way after those workouts.

Jeremy you also deserve a cheer :cool1::banana::cheer2: you beat your time and hopefully had an amazing time achieving it. Hmm support can be very spotty on long courses- that's where i find music comes in handy!

Me i've been a little pre-occupied with my new arrival!!!! Ok it's not a baby so don't get all excited, we have a 9 week old mini lop house bunny! She's called poppy and I LOVE HER! Oh my goodness I am going to be a horrendous parent, so protective!
Have done some runs tho, went out with DBF who runs stupidly slowly in training (11min/mile) compared to races (8min/mile half marathon)! How does he do that!?!?! Then speed work this morning outside. Wasn't able to run at sprint as long as i'd hoped, but pleased even attempted this.

Kate - I don't know about the grade I'll givev you fro a parent.....making an announcement like that with no picture???? :eek: :rotfl:The fact that my running shoes were for pronation adn so were my orthotics finally did me in Saturday. So, I really did need new runnign shoes. At least that's what I'm sayin'. ;) What's aweful? I don't know what style they aer, jsut Saucony's made for people with orthotics. Bad, me!

Jim - Sorry your ride was not so great. You will ahve better one! Good for you for getting 25 miles in in those conditions!

Amanda - Way to go for finishing C25K!!! That's awesome! Good luck on teh 10K program!

How cool is it that I can be relaying a story to my old roommate by e-mails, she calls her dh adn when I arrive at the running store, the other employees are waiting for em and already know styles of shoes I should try??? Got to love having a friend's dh work at the store. I felt so special. :goodvibes

Plus, the woman who waited on my asked if I was trianing for something. Well...as a matter of fact I am. A Half IM! (Boy did I feel nauseous after saying that out loud! :scared1: )
 
Kate - Hmmmmm. Good things about my ride................. 1. It was much better coming home with the wind at my back. 2. The heat is not as bad ridin' as it is runnin' !! :goodvibes:goodvibes


I ran a VERY warm 3.9 this morning. SLOWLY adding miles in the heat. It's gotten really hot, really quickly here.

OR I could not be so flippin' lazy and get out of the house a few hours earlier than I do.

Jim- Here's to hoping it was just a bad weekend and thing will go better soon.

Kate - congratulations on the new arrival. I wish my race times were that much faster than my training times as well.

Well, I took Monday and Tuesday off from formal workouts, but on Monday I walked around Wal-Mart and Tuesday I was teaching and had to walk between buildings. Today was my first official day back working out. I did a little over 2 miles, with 4 1 min. jogging sections in the middle. I'm doing a 5K on Friday and wanted to know if I could walk/run it. Running slow didn't feel too bad, I guess because it uses a different set of muscles.

I got my first "post Pig" run in on tuesday- 2.5 miles and am hoping to get some more distance in today. I'm not sure I will as I have to be at the HS track to time for sectionals around 5:15 and school is 20-25 minutes out of town and after I run I'd have to shower. I'm still hoping to be able to get a run in.

I've been plugging along. Only one week to go with the new runner group. Their 5k is on 5/31/10! I can't wait. It should be a lot of fun!

The other new development is that the other day while at the track with us, DD5 (almost 6) was in the mood to run. She completed 10 laps (2.5 miles)!! I was so shocked. So after talking to her about it, she is going to do her first 5k with me at DL!! She is so excited!

Michelle - I sound like you could have a little runner on your hands. Just keep plugging along, May 31 will be here before you know it.

AFM, I ran in the Radiou 5k yesterday. As you remember, I just did my first half marathon last Sunday so I had no idea how it would go. I normally wouldn't have dreamed of competing this close together but this is the one race that is becoming an annual traditions. Radiou is a hard rock Christian radio station in Columbus Ohio with repeaters around the country. This is the 4th annual 5K and the 3rd I've done. The first time it did the 5K I finished in 57 minutes. I was untrained and did it solely to support the station. 2 years later, missing the 2nd annual race, I finished in 47:01 and I was just getting started in training for my 10K. This year, I was hoping to do better than last year but with only 5 days of recovery I wasn't sure.

We arrived very early for the race because last year there was a problem with shirt sizes and a friend didn't get a shirt that fit. He's a Large and when we registers all they had left was XXL (my size) and Small. This year, there was no problem getting shirts and we had over an hour to relax, warm up, meet the DJ's. etc. My race strategy was to approximate a run 1min, walk 3 min. interval. I had done this approximately 2 miles during training. Even though the course was fairly flat, I planned to very the Walk/Run times a little bit to take advantage of running down hill and walking up hill.

So, we get the start line, the gun sounds and we're off. I decided to start with a running interval, and I'm feeling good for about 30 seconds, I look down at my watch and I'm going fast (for me) closing in on a 10:00 mile, too fast by the end of my first minute I needed my walk break. So, I slow down to a brisk walk. I waited a little bit longer than 3 min before going into my next running interval. This one was about a 12:30 pace about where I wanted to be but since I still hadn't completely recovered from going out to quick, I needed this second walk break. Right about his time, I met up with the lead group coming back. As I closed in on mile 1, it was time to try the 3rd running interval. I ran as far as the mile mark and finished with a 1 mile split of 13:13 but I knew a fixed walk/run interval was done. I decided to run when I could and walk fast the rest of the way.

Over the next 2 miles I only did 4 runs each of which shorter than minute. I reached the turnaround my time was 21:18. I reached mile 2 in 27:37 for a 13:49 mile. Mile 3 I slowed down even further walking the entire 1/2 mile from 2 1/2 to 3. For the final .1 mile I decided to start running again at .05 mile I kicked it up to as much of a sprint as I could muster a 6:26 pace. I cross the finish line with a time of 43:39 a full 3 minutes and 22 second faster than last year and I'm more tired then I was after my half marathon. I also have a better idea of what my maximum heart rate is. Using the various calculators I had calculated anywhere between 175bpm to 185bpm. During my final sprint to the finish my heart rate was between 188 and 190. According to what I've ready online that should be about 5 beats below my maximum heart rate but I'm going to use the 190 for training.

I am thrilled with my results but I can't help but wonder, if I could finish faster on fresher legs or if I hadn't started out too fast. But, that will just need to wait for next race which probably won't be until late summer or early fall.
 
Tracy - Glad you were able to see the shuttle

Normally we can see the trail from our backyard, but I was in Texas having a great time with my 2 Grandsons ( 9 & 11). My son and his wife are both stationed in El Paso so I do try and get out to see my grandsons plus May is their birthday month for both of them.

Jeremy - Great job on the back to backs.

AFM - Just got home from going camping at a state park close by. We had a great time even though the temp. was in the low 90's. My DH and I did a 6.91 mile walk on the Legacy Trail and then today we did a 10 mile bike ride before packing up and going home. :cool1: It was great after the walk because we showered and then my DH fixed breakfast. We think it will work great for the marathon in Jan. We plan on taking the motorhome over to Epcot and relaxing before hand and then back to the rig afterwards. No buses this time.
Has anyone every parked over at Epcot for the marathon and was there any issues. :confused3
We are staying at Fort Wilderness again but we would un-hook just to make it more comfortable. This we will do for the 5K, 1/2 and then my husband will be also doing the full and then I can relax after seeing him off.:cheer2:

Michelle: Yep, seems like you may have a little runner in the midst. Cool.

Jeremy: Sounds like you did well, considering you just did a Half Marathon just a short time before this event. Could have maybe gone faster, but could have been a combo of just doing a Half and maybe starting out with a pace your body may not have been able to handle. These things can be a situations of trial and error and you just have to see how your body can take it.

Kathy: Not sure what your question is. Do you mean walking from the parking lot to the start or walking from Fort Wilderness to someplace. I don't see an issue with driving over there, but maybe take the buses for the 5K? It is not that big (means participation wise) and buses don't really seem to be that much of an ordeal that day. The buses that are usually packed are the value hotels like the All-Stars and Pop.

AFM: DId a nice sweaty 6 miles this morning. Some elbow bombs and a sweat rag was required but no Pinky pistols yet. I am so ready for the LOST final episode!!! However I am going to miss the beginning, but I am going to TiVo it. First two hours are a recap kind of a thing. I made plans with an old High School guy friend that I reconnected with via facebook. (Isn't FB a trip?) Going to finally see "Oceans" by Disney.

I went 3.33 miles today! I'm so proud. That's the furthest I've ever gone. I'm doing this 10K training which is lots of intervals. Today was run 3 min, walk 1 min repeat 10 times. With 5 min warm-up and 5 min cool-down it was 50 min. I'm not fast but I'm going further than I thought possible!!!

Thanks Tracy for the reply.

I meant just parking at Epcot. We did use the bus system last year for the
5K. Everyone at the Fort last year was so confused at where to pick up the bus for the 5k and then when the internal buses would be running. It was finally determined that we did have to pick up the bus for the 5K at the lodge . Very confusing.

Kathy Can't help with your question sorry. We went into Epcot after the 5k as neither mum or i were too much of a mess and we popped our race shirts on. No problem at all with the buses after the marathon either- the walk to the bus seemed almost as long as the run, but i'm certain it wasn't :) great workouts too :) I love the idea of being able to chill out whilst DH runs tho ha ha

me ran a very beetroot hot 6.14miles saturday morning, we hit 26oC which is weirdly hot for this time of year. Nearly.... died..... but ran at my speed again of 8:50/mile. Then walked my mum for another 2 maybe 3. Spent today visiting elderly relatives, just a quick walk to get milk which clearly doesnt count. only a few weeks til i do leadership in running fitness course so i can lead my own beginner run club!!!!

I have to get back on track! Only one run since the Pig! I need to get some regular runs in so on that note- I will run after school today- even though it's supposed to be in the upper 80's here- I'll head indoors and get it done!
