Warriors Irish Eyes are a Smiling

Stan - Good luck on that 21-miler. IK envy your sense of accomplishment when you are done!

Amanda - SOmebody has ressurected teh History of WISH thread. A very good read. There are links in there to the first 2 years of WISH teram adn how many of us started out only dreaming of doing what we have now doen several times. I'm worried tha tyou are hurting. While shoes are a nice prize, if you are hurting, get them now. It may also be that you are voerdoing or something is catching up with you this week. Listen to your body, when things hurt, you need a break. Very hard thing to learn and not feel like you are being lazy, but proper rest can be just as important as proper training.

Been lazy the last 2 nights. :guilty: Know I can't be tonight at least, as it's swim clinic. Still, I am only runnign twice a week, missing 1 is not good. Must kick it in gear next week. Of course, swim clinic is twice this week as a make up, so I keep telling myself I am not missing too much. Still, I habit I need to kick quickly.

Carrie - Thanks for your concern! My shoes aren't the problem - my sore muscles are! My body isn't used to this much exercise. Only a few more weeks and I'm going to get my new shoes!!!

Amanda

Amanda, your comments sure do bring back some beginning training memories for me. I would drive to my training path, go out there and then literally crawl back up my steps to the house. I wondered if things would ever get better. Let me assure you that they will. Just be careful to not over train and if you hurt too much, take a step back.

Erika, yay for pain free! Hope that it continues.

Pam, good luck with your standing. Hope all goes well with the pie baking. Yum!

Stan, good luck on your soggy marathon training. I'll be doing your first 13.1 virtually with you. Be strong!

Carrie, not to worry about your comments/concerns for my over doing things. I do appreciate it.

Things have been quite busy for me this week and I really did not get in much training. Ugh. I am going out for another 13.1 "training" event Saturday and know that this one is going to probably be a faster crew than Annapolis. I have 4 hours to complete the event. I don't mind using all 4 if I need and will definitely listen to my old body. On the road tomorrow a.m.

Thank you! I was an athlete - back in the day - so I think I know how to read my body without injuring myself too much (I graduated HS with 9 varsity letters: gymnastics, soccer, and lacrosse). It does make me sad to realize how much I've let myself get out of shape!

I hope this weekend goes well for you! I still read "running for 4 hours" and think, "Wow! I could never do that!!!" Thanks for the inspiration!

Happy Friday Warriors!!!

A fun-filled few days (not) it has been. I got in 7.4 miles yesterday.

Today was my appt. with the new back Dr., & unfortunately the initial news is not good. With just 2 x-rays he was able to see that my lumbar spine is a mess. It's so bad even I could see it. I have one vertebra that is literally about 3/16 - 1/4" stepped forward of it's neighbors. I'm going to a physical therapist on Monday for a "core strength" evaluation, & will be getting a new MRI in the next few days. Then we'll proceed on from there. His prognosis is (most likely) a fusion or prosthetic discs. Ugh. Maybe I'll just become a Vicodin addict instead. That seems simpler at this point. (JK) (sort of).

The GOOD news is that the $100 orthotic inserts from the podiatrist seem to be helping a lot. My feet were relatively comfortable on my run yesterday. I'm going to do a 10+ mile (hopefully 11-12) LR on Sunday for the real test.

I'm headed for a 1/2 in Ohio in 2 weeks and (depending on what the Dr says) that may be it for a while. If the installation of the Bionic Back has to be done, it's gotta' be sooner, not later. I have a 1/2 M in Anaheim in September that I will crawl through if I have to.

Color me bummed out.:mad::mad::mad: And somewhat PO'ed too.

JimB ~ sorry to hear about your back- but glad the orthodics are working.

Local 5 K today looks bleak outside - but at least it's not wet or windy! Just temps in the 30's I believe.

Jim, Sorry I haven't been around for a few days and I am sooo sorry to hear about the Back News. Glad the orthotics are working out, I wear mine all the time. Hoping the back situation can be resolved and it makes you feel better. Oh, and NO to the Vicodin addict thing!;)

I had a great massage yesterday and the guy really got my IT bands a workout, when he started on my right one (the one that locked up at Miami ING Half) I jumped a bit, but bit the towel and let him go to work, I know I needed it big time.

I think the lower mileage and cutting out a day is helping me a lot. Kinda just a bit burned out and with the soreness and injuries and toe pain, I just needed to do it. Trying to get out on my bike more, hmmm, maybe I may try a Du at some point this summer....hmmmm... I will have to think about that.
Put in a nice 3 miler at the beach this morning - Beautiful sunrise and weather!! Photos are posted on FB.

Hope everyone is doing well also, Sarah, take care of that new little WISHer!!

Kathy, FYI, there is a 10k coming up at Spanish River Park in Boca. I believe its called the gumbo limbo green turtle gallop. It is on Active. Me and another WISHer (Tricia) are going to do it!

Racey Tracy

Tracy: Glad to hear that your massage (owie!) and time off have been helping! It's tough to keep going on with race after race without any breaks in between!

Jim: I'm thinking healing thoughts for your back! Chronic pain really sucks, particularly when the only thing that can be done is surgery. :scared1:

Lily: Hope your half went well today!

Stan: Hope you had a great 21 mile run, today! Remember, your long runs are worse than the event, itself!

As for me, I'm still slowly getting in the miles on weekdays, and then doing my long runs on Saturday with Joints in Motion. Today's run was one of my favorite routes in the city (because it feels like you're no longer in the city) but it was only 4.5 miles, because the real action was going on in the water! A massive gray whale decided to park itself out about 10-20 ft off of the beach to forage in the sand for food. It was just after dawn when we got there, and there was already a crowd gathered to watch the whale roll and blow as it nonchalantly fed. :woohoo: The gray whales stop in this area to feed on their way up to Alaska for the summer, but I have never seen one this close to the shore. Other people said they saw at least one or two other whales farther out, but this one sure was brave!

Here are the couple pictures I got; they're not very good, but it's hard to get a good picture of a giant whale coming out of the water. One of the guys in our group got a fantastic video of the whale blowing and breaching. :thumbsup2

So, this morning's run turned into more whale watching than anything else, but it's another reason to get up early and put the running shoes on! You never know what you're going to see!

Sarah - Great
Pictures!! There is a migration route for Right Whales just off the coast here. 3 weeks ago I was there & saw at least a dozen whales anywhere from 400 yards to about a mile offshore. They are really magnificent creatures.

As for me - I got in about 11 miles yesterday. The feet did ok, the back - not so much. But I figured that if my back is officially a train wreck, what's the point of babying it?

Jim the point of babying it is to keep you from being in too much pain. I'm so sorry you're going through all of this. Still hoping for some nicer alternative to show it's head...... like

the whale! Sarah how exciting seeing whales on a run. I get excited when I see rabbits so you totally win.

I cheered my DFiance at the Liverpool half marathon yesterday (which he stormed around!) and managed to contain the medal envy within me, but it spurred me on to head to the gym for some speed runs at 12 km/h for 400m with rests in between. Need to do that outside really. I have new inspiration though as we both got a place in the Royal Parks Half in london in october. You run through the 3 main parks of London and I've been so eager to do this race, but it sells out fast. In fact today it was only 2 hours before all the places had gone! Whoop whoop. Now an injury free run up would be perfect :wizard:

Hey Warriors!

Jim, so sorry to hear of the prognosis. Don't despair. You can still be active. Just may have to be a bit more artful about it. Good luck with all this. Coast to Coast may be a bit slower, but it can happen!

Tracy, glad to hear you are getting some other activity going. I am always intrigued about tri/du...that's it intrigued. You go ahead!

Amanda, well with your background, you definitely have what you need to get it done. You've just got to dig in and find that part, dust it off and have fun!

OK, I'm sorry. I'm having a brain moment. Bookwood, (name?) how'd the 5k go?

Sarah, fantastic opportunity. I think I would be there crying if I saw the whales. For me it is a dream to see that and turtles in their environment. Thanks for sharing your pictures.

Kate, congratulations on getting into the half there. I'd always thought it would be a fun thing to do...go across the pond and do a half somewhere there. Amazing though that that one sells out so quickly. Is it fast pace requirement?

The half I did in Waukesha, WI was fun! I like the smaller events as this. We were able to stay indoors until the start time so I didn't freeze in a corral. It was held on a bike/hike paved trail. The half was quite flat and the weather was cooperative. I enjoy the treks in the cooler weather. I managed in just a hair over 3 hours, and for me it is a fast time. I was almost last so most folks were long gone by the time I arrived. Many of the fullers passed me too. The participants were friendly and the event offered bling for the first time. I was able to have a nice warm shower in the facility before we made our journey home.

Lily - COngrats on Waukesha! The small races feels so cozy adn nice. It's hard because they tend to not have as many nback of the packers, though. Glad you had fun!

Tracy - :grouphug: I think a du (ir maybe a tri ;) ) sounds great for you!!! I really think my legs love the lack of pounding in the summer. Plus, biking and swimming is much cooler for the hot summer months. (Yeah, they feel hot ot me even if they would be cool for you) Hope you can find a good place to train with no more hurts! :grouphug:

Jim - :grouphug::grouphug::grouphug: I hate hearing you so down. You are right, get teh surgery over ASAP (without rushing so you know tyou are taking the right path) and get the healing started. I do hope all goes smoothly and you are back and pain free soon!

Kate - COngrats on teh race together! SOunds awesome!

Sarah - Great pic! And to think I was excited to see a loon and 2 bluebirds. lol.

Pam - Hope teh race was fun, even if it was chilly!

Amanda - DOn't be too hard on yourself. I see you have 3 kids. I'm thinking age adn tchild bearing have taken a bit of a toll. I know it's hard (I'll never see another sub 6 mile or sub 21 5k myself), but you just have to look at your progress from this re-start adn not look back to days of old. :grouphug:

Well, we worked our tails off in core Friday. Saturday we woke up adn could not move, so we postponed the 8-miler until Sunday. Then, we proceded to work on some very physical home projects. (What were we thinking???) Sunday, we talked of postponing to Monday after 200 feet. Sad, I know. Got to 1.5 miles and we both decided we'd live. Now, things hurt the whole time adn I got a huge blister from teh orthodics. Grr.... However, teh things that had hurt every run since Princes did not. My core even felt strong. :-O Woo hoo! Funny, all those stonkers made a slightly worse than average run feel like a PR! I'll take any improvement right now. :-p With teh exception of the blister, I think I'm finally gettign used to the new orthodics.

For teh newer team members: As I was posting, I was thinking about how some of us have known each other for 2 years (or more) and to new people, we are all new. I hope you never, ever, feel excluded. WHile we may know other's histories better, we love rejoicing in the new victories of others. That helps spark us when we get burned out. Also, WISH is a place where you get out what you put into it. Not saying that anyone isn't sharing enough. Just that the more you share and interact with us here (or any other threads), the more you will get back. :goodvibes

I love reading what everyone is doing and how amazing everyone is! I don't have everyone's names or backgrounds straight but I'll probably figure it out eventually. :thumbsup2
I did my 1st 25 min run today. It went pretty well. The kids are off of school this week for spring break so I had my 6 year old and my 4 year old home with me (thankfully the little guy still has daycare because he's a hurricane!). The treadmill is in the playroom so I had them there to entertain me! My poor 6 year old even ran upstairs to refill my water bottle for me!
I need to start looking for 5Ks and 10Ks to "practice" before the big half-marathon...

Amanda

Just finished a short 2 mile walk but was able to maintain a 17 pace. Takes time, but it is getting better each week. I know by the time the half marathons come I will be ready.

Kathy

Amanda - LOVE that your 6YO was refililng your water! Too cute!

Kathy - Way to go!!! Yup, it rtakes time, but kep at it and you will get there. Love tha tyou are seeing improvement!

HELLO MY WARRIORS! Boy have I missed you! After a nasty bout of bronchitis and then a lovely hospital stay, I am back! Started running a little last week and finally made my way back to the gym this week.

Hope everyone has been doing good!

I am so glad to be back!:cheer2:

Happy Wednesday Warriors!!!

Michelle - Glad to hear you are over your bronchitis. But the problem is that ya' gave it to me!! :lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

More of just a late winter cold I think. I was running a fever @ work yesterday night, & my partner was up all night with migraine induced nausea/vomiting. Yes, we were quite the pair............ "good evening sir, my name's Jim & this is my partner Maxine. Don't mind the runny noses, coughing & puking. Trust us, we know what we are doing....................:confused3"

So I decided to take the day off from training today. When my DW gets home, we may drag the dogs out for a bridge walk. I'm planning to try a few miles tomorrow if I have stopped coughing up a lung by then.

The Dr. wants me to do 3 weeks of physical therapy & then go back for a revisit. Been this route before, it's not gonna' make any difference, but I guess I have to do it to get farther along in any definitive course of treatment. Bleh.

So. That's it from warm (FINALLY!!!!!) Florida.

You guys all rock!
