If you dine at the Islands restaurant check the charges afterward. DS and I had dinner there on Wednesday night. The service was absolutely terrible. I was on the verge of complaining to the manager, but had a "this is Christmas" moment and decided to be forgiving. Then there was the tip to deal with. I tip well for good service and typically tip 20% if the service is just adequate. But our server was so bad, I decided that 15% was generous in this case. Checked my credit card statement last night and discover that our horrible server added a 25% tip to our bill! Maybe I've just been lucky, but in the thousands of times that I've charged meals in restaurants, I have never had that happen before, and I am totally disgusted.

If you the have original receipt and it shows that you did indeed leave a tip of 15% or whatever amount and now your charge card is showing 25% tip. My thoughts, that is petty theft at the very least.

Say your bill was $200 and you left a 15% tip that would equal $30.00. If this person altered it to state you left a 25% tip, now that tip turns into $50.

Call the hotel and have it changed. It should all be on record.

I do have the original receipt. Fortunately, it's only a few dollars, since there were just the two of us and DS had the $5.99 kid's buffet. But it's the principal of the thing, more than the amount of money. I will contact the hotel and let them know about it. I don't want this guy ripping off anybody else.

Was a minimum tip amout already included on the bill? I know some restaurants do this sort of thing...

Altering the tip, is basically stealing.

The Islands do not add Gratuity, its up to you what you tip.

Just to say, we have ate ther lots of times, and always had excellent service, hopefully it was just a 1 off, and they will sort you out after you contact them.

Since this a recent charge that has appeared on your online statement, I would check it again in a few days and see if it has changed. Apparently, some restaurants will put through an authorized charge, estimating the tip, and then it gets inputted again with the actual bill and it gets changed.

here's another thread about it....http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/443490

Hmmmm....that's interesting. I use credit cards at restaurants all the time and I've never seen that. I'll give the server the benefit of the doubt for now, and wait a few days before I contact the hotel. We had dinner at the same restaurant on Monday night and the service was good. It was just this one guy, and he was extremely poor.

ETA: damo, I think you hit the nail on the head. It just occurred to me that I charged the Continental breakfast at the Orchid yesterday morning on a different card. We just picked something up and paid at the register, so no server and no tip. Checked the website and the pending charge is the price I paid plus 25%. So I'm expecting both charges to be correct when they are finalized. When that happens my faith in humanity will be restored. And I'll owe the server an apology for thinking he was trying to cheat me. But he really needs to work on his table waiting skills so that he can actually earn the tips he receives.
