I just received the following email from ebay

eBay request: Please follow the Member Verification Procedure (Second Notice)

Dear eBay Member,

Due to recent account takeovers and unauthorized listings, eBay is introducing a new account verification method. From time to time, randomly selected accounts (seller and/or buyer) are subjected to an advanced verification process based on our merchant accounts/bank relations and customers credit card. eBay may also request in an email message scanned/faxed copies of one or more photo ID's. Your account confirmation may go wrong if your credit card/bank account is expired, or if you have changed your credit card number, billing address etc. without letting us know about the change.
Subject of this verification process are also the accounts that have unpaid dues to eBay.
Your account is not suspended, but if in 48 hours after you receive this message your account is not confirmed we reserve the right to suspend your eBay registration. If you received this notice and you are not the authorized account holder, please be aware that it is in violation of eBay policy to represent oneself as another eBay user. Such action may also be in violation of local, national, and/or international law. eBay is committed to assist law enforcement with any inquires related to attempts to misappropriate personal information with the intent to commit fraud or theft. Information will be provided at the request of law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
Note: If this is the second time you receive this notice, it might be because you have made a mistake when you entered your details or that the account was not updated at all.

If you receive anything like this, PLEASE DO NOT GIVE THE INFORMATION THEY ASK FOR!!!!! It is a spoof email!!!!

Unfortunately I gave my bank card details, including my card pin number, before I realised it wasn't genuine. Can't believe I was so stupid, but I was!!!! I did contact my bank straight away and have cancelled my card.

Let this just be a warning to everyone else!!!!

Oh Laura SIL did this last year :guilty:
Best advice is to check your messages in Ebay. Any geniune email will also be listed there.

You also get emails saying that you have won an auction and the buyer has logged a dispute. When you click the link to say that you did not buy this, guess what. You get a screen requiring ebay log and password details. This is so they can hack your account :furious:

Laura :grouphug:

I was nearly caught out like this myself before, but thanks to people like you who put warnings on threads like this, I had remembered from somebody else who had put a warning always to check the messages in the "My Messages" page on my ebay account and checked there first. As it wasnt there I passed the email onto Ebay who confirmed that it was a spoof, I now regularly get about 2 or 3 a week spoof emails from either Ebay or Paypal, I send them straight to Ebay/Paypal and then delete them, they always come back and confirm they are spoof.

Thank you for the warning, and I am so glad you realised very quickly and cancelled your card, I have to say they are very genuine looking emails and I am sure have fooled many people.

Just posting on Laura's behalf, she just wants to tell you all that she has cancelled her ebay and Paypal accounts as well. 'No more Ebay!' she said!!

That's a shame. Although with the amount of scammers I can understand :goodvibes

Laura, I was caught out twice! Firstly with a spoof email regarding my paypal account. Then a few months later I was trying to set up an ebay account for my parents and I was caught out again! Please don't let it put you off - at least you caught on it was a spoof before they got anywhere! I also had to cancel my cards and my parents!

I was setting up an ebay account for them using their credit card when I got an email asking me to verify the account and asked for the pin number - silly me try to type it in - should have known better! Parents were ok about it just had to get mum to call straight away and explain to the bank what happened. They cancelled the card asap! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the reminder - some of these e-mails look so genuine

Sorry that this happened to you, the email's do look real.

It worth noting that eBay/pay pal never send emails that are addressed to "Dear customer" "Dear eBay/pay pal user etc". They always include your name.

Got the joke now though LOL :thumbsup2

Thanx for the reminder Laura ~ Without the Dis I would have not known to check my messages first to see if it was a genuine ebay message.

Unfortunately I didn't know before hand to check 'my messages' first, but I do now!!!!!! I still can't believe I was so stupid to type in my pin number. I had won an item from ebay, and wanted to get it paid for. Then I got this email saying my account could be suspended if I didn't do what they said in the email within 48 hours, and as it was about 4 days since I received it, I so so concerned about getting it sorted, and getting my item paid for, that I went ahead and typed my pin. If it hadn't been for that, then I hope I would have had the sense not to type it.

Laura I wouldn't feel bad. The scammers have got very clever and emails look quite real. Most of ebay is full of buyers and sellers who behave better :goodvibes

Laura, these e mails look so authentic they could fool anyone! Try not to let it put you off using ebay again.

The scammers are getting better and better at making E-mails look genuine, quite scary really! I find the best thing to do if in doubt is to login to my eBay or Paypal account (whatever the E-mail was supposedly concerning) and if I need to take any sort of action it'll say so there.

I quite agree! Also I have noticed since changing email accounts that some ISPs are better than others at filtering out the spam / phishing etc emails. Tiscali was awful, Blueyonder not a lot better but gmail seems to catch 99% of them.
