WARNING to anybody driving to WDW!!!

has anyone actually GOTTEN a ticket? I wonder if they can give them, since Disney is private property.

We rarely drive there but think law enforcement presence is a good idea anywhere.

It kind of makes sense...all municipalities are HURTING for money and Florida has been hit by the economic slow-down in more ways than one (drop in property values so drop in property tax, no construction jobs so residents reducing spending or leaving, other areas hurting so tourism drops and so does the sales and resort taxes, no state income tax). Catching out-of-towners in speed traps brings in revenue but doesn't upset the locals too much (after a day or two they figure out where they are).

I have a car but I live on public transportation - finding parking in NYC is either a logistical nightmare or prohibitively expensive. But we are driving up from Miami so we'll be careful.

Not very logical way of thinking if you ask me (speaking on them not you). I for one know most states that have heavy tourism, at least the ones I have lived in, or not to big in ticketing people on vacation. They hardly hand out out of town people unless they are really breaking the speed limit. So your tourism is slow and you solve this by handed out speeding tickets in this economy. WOW I can see lines of families just looking forward to coming all the way back down the Florida to get a ticket. Statistically is has been shown that if you start handing out a lot of tickets it turns tourists off. How this changes during a recession I don't know but I still don't think it can help any. The point is your trying to pick up tourists not turn them away. Seriously on the interstate and most highways pulling someone for anything less than 10mph is a joke...people that go 85 and 90 in a 65 deserve the ticket not the people going 75....

Sounds like the 10mph rule does not count. I use that as my rule of thumb. Set my cruise control to 8 over. Most police will not bother you with that. Unless it's a camera, and yes I've gotten a speeding ticket from a camera. I was doing my normal 8 over near Washington D.C. A month or so later, the rental car agency sent me a bill of the speeding ticket.

See, my father taught me to drive in the early 90s and it was a 5 MPH over rule. He told me that if I ever got a ticket 5 miles or less over the posted limit, he would pay it, since cops ignore 5 miles and under. You know, he was true to his word, since a cop saw a kid (me) driving 3 miles over and pulled me over

Yes, I got caught in a trap about 3 years ago. I was doing, or so they say 62MPH in a 45. It was our first day & we were anxious. Came over a big hill & an officer is standing in the street waving everyone over. (Just before the entrance to WDW, speed limit goes from 65 to 45 in seconds) Well, 4 points & about $289 in fines & online traffic school later...my record was clear.:goodvibes

Lesson learned? Stay in the middle lane & have someone else read road signs. It is all a big loop & you can find the right exit eventually. :rotfl:

I'm glad they are cracking down on speeders, getting there a few minutes early because you're doing 20-25 miles over the speed limit is not worth the consequences of what could happen in a crash. I'm also confused as to why people are referring to it as a "speed trap" how can it be a trap if your doing something you shouldn't be doing. Watch the signs and you'll see that the speed is going to drop, Reduced Speed Ahead, as to the LEOs making money off of the ticket, that's not true very little of the fine goes to law enforcement, most goes to the court system.

Wonder if they ever pull over the Disney busses, some of those guys have lead feet!!

I have seen Disney buses pulled over. It doesn't happen often, but it happens. The first time I saw it happen, the bus was full of people.

If they wanted to make money, hang out at park closing time. They would be taking down buses like shooting ducks in a barrel.

I don't disagree with slowing everyone down, but like I've said, I keep to the 5-10 over. The slower the speed, the closer I am to the speed limit. In a 25, I might do 30. It just depends on whether it's a densily populated area or in the boonies...

Hey guys, I just wanted to warn anybody who's driving to Disney World soon to watch out for the Orange County Sheriffs.... Just wanted to warn you guys. Keep your eyes on your speed because the Orange County Sheriffs were out in FULL force!

Thank you for the heads up. I usually stash the radar detector once we get to WDW, and don't bother with it until we leave. Seems like I may need to rethink that for next trip. While I am not whipping around WDW (I tend to keep it within 10), I would not like getting tagged because of a sudden speed limit change.
Thanks again for the info.

"The speed drastically drops from 55 to 35 right there in a short distance."

See, I think that that is the important message.

If they aren't giving the usual amount of time between "it's changing" and "it has changed", that's the word to get out. And if it's much less than normal...well that's just plain old sneaky.

Queenie82, I'm glad hubby hired a driver yesterday instead of hiring a car!

Hey guys, I just wanted to warn anybody who's driving to Disney World soon to watch out for the Orange County Sheriffs. We went to WDW for my birthday this past weekend and we drove down from NC on Friday. We came into WDW from Daniel Webster Parkway and came on Western Way behind the Coronado Springs. Not far after the Disney sign on Western Way, the road curves by the Coronado Springs and there were two Sheriffs there with radar guns. The speed drastically drops from 55 to 35 right there in a short distance. I got pulled over and was certain I was getting a ticket. The Sheriff took about ten minutes and then returned and said "I don't want to ruin your birthday so here's a warning." She gave me a yellow sheet of paper that was NOT a ticket (miracle) and then told me to keep it down. During the two days we were there, we saw Sheriffs hiding all over the place using radar and pulling people over. The worst ever was on that straight away heading towards the Contemporary (this is after you've come through the Magic Kingdom gates mind you). Right where the road curves, the speed is 30 and there were two Sheriffs there pulling people over. Guests traveling on the monorail could see it. It was so close to the Contemporary it was silly. Just wanted to warn you guys. Keep your eyes on your speed because the Orange County Sheriffs were out in FULL force!
Thanks for the heads up, I'm going to be staying at the Coronado Springs.

I'm more afraid of the Louisiana State Troopers though :scared:

I had a conversation with a bus driver back in June, she was showing us all the places that the sheriff cars hide looking for speeders. Since WDW is in an unincorporated portion of the county (Reedy Creek Development District) they fall under the Sheriff Departments jurisdiction.

The driver told me that the buses can get tickets, but they don't get pulled over, I'm not sure how that works though...

A couple of comments:

Many years ago, a state Senator from Central Fla was ticketed in Windermere for exceeding their 30mph townwide limit. Windermere had an absolute zero tolerance policy for speeding. He subsequently got passed in the state legislature a rule that no tickets may be issued unless a driver exceeds the limit by 5mph or more. So far as I know, that rule is still in effect, statewide.

So that's your official state allowance for speeding. Of course, you may still be pulled over for a warning, thus losing more time than the speeding saves. (BTW, Windermere immediately circumvented this rule by lowering their limits to 25mph)

The Sentinel has occasionally published stories about WDW hiring extra off duty OCSD deputies for traffic enforcement. So many of the cars you see on property are there at Disney's request and expense. I have no problem with the company doing this to tackle a problem that clearly endangers people.

Water parks: a few pedofiles (sp?) got nabbed for touching kids/women in the water parks over the summer.:scared1: People were really upset that WDW would allow them into the parks, so security has been beefed up supposedly. My questions is how can you tell one of these people from the rest of us? They don't walk around with a "P" branded in their chest or anything. :sad2:

It's really easy to be going a little too fast on property- there aren't many intersections or driveways and the roads tend to be wide and straight, so we start thinking "interstate" and the speeds come up to match. That's even before taking into account the excitement factor- "hey, we're almost there" can make you dip a little more with the right foot.

Exactly! How can they tell from someone speeding to those sick people! :confused3 What if they don't drive? That is just nonsense.

Another place to add a warning to:

If you use Exit 62 off I-4 (it's the 417 N/Celebration/Disney World exit) be VERY careful--as soon as you exit, the speed limit is 35...then 40...then 45...then 50. All within a couple of miles' distance between the interstate and the "main gate". And it is enforced (I saw the sheriff pulling people over on Sunday, and have witnessed it on several other occasions).

I just shake my head and laugh secretly at the people who tailgate me there while I putt along at the speed limit. Sorry if I make any CMs late for work. :goodvibes I have had 2 warnings already in Tampa so I don't think I'll get away with another one in Orlando!
