Warning new scam

My Aunt got a call from someone a couple of weeks ago

they said " Grandma Jane?? I am in real trouble" since some of her Grand kids prank her sometimes she said "well tell me what the problem is and I will help" they said " I was at a concert in Montreal and I got busted with Pot, I made a bad mistake but I am in a horrible jail PLEASE HELP!"

She said "Who is this again?"

Then they said "Its me Grandma" Then she said something like "who do you think youre calling?" and they said ' Is this Grandma Jane from XXXX?" well they mispronounced her town name!!


The really funny thing is if you knew this side of the family you would know that they dont travel EVER so the chances of one of them doing something bad is laughable in itself the chance of them doing it so far away?? Wouldnt happen

What would the scam be? I'd just think it was kids prank calling

Thats exactly what it was there was a story on the news a couple of days after her call where a woman sent this "grandchild" $10,000 to bail them out.

Unfortunately, my friend's grandmother was scammed just like this. She sent $5000 by wire immediately, but then got an additional call that more $$ was needed. I think by the time all was said and done, she was out like $12,000

Interesting but I know a lot of people wouldn't know it, I know at least at the county jail, you have to actually go to the jail and use CASH for the bail.

Someone can't just wire the money over to the jail and/or person.

I wouldnt have known that either, thanks for the information!

I googled her name after this cam up and all the 411 pages say "first name last name age 75" or whatever. SO they are an easy target why do they need to put the ages on there?

I wouldn't have known either other than many years ago we had a situation in the family where bail was needed and it was a substantial amount....we were when we found out it had to be cash only. Luckily, it wasn't us putting up the bail but I knew enough about it to know some of the details -- I couldn't believe they *really* wanted to have THAT much cash but that was how it was done. I don't know all the details but I do remember the "cash only" thing pretty much had us all going "HUH?"

It was just something that stuck with me because it boggled my mind -- basically if say someone had a $1 million bail (it wasn't that high but just using that as an example!), they had to pay it in cash...I couldn't comprehend that -- I wouldn't want to bail the person out because I would be freaked out to carry that much in cash at one time.

It could be different elsewhere but I'm going on the assumption that is how it is in most places.
