I bought these and made gifts for all DS's teachers and a couple for myself.

Well last night I was baking cookies and went to get the cookie sheet out of the oven and the oven mitt just melted!!!!! I did not get burned because the mitt is so thick but the pot holders are not so thick!

Please do not use these!!!

I am calling Dollar Tree Corporate this AM I am sure they will not be there but if not I will call first thing Monday morning.

I sent a email to the teachers that I had their email addys and ask them to forward to the other teachers and asked them just to throw them away. I am so worried someone will get burned.

 Thanks for posting this. I buy lots of stuff at the Dollar Tree. Nice of you to pass this on.

I bought some pot holders last valentines day, they were oh so cute, but boy did my hand get burned through them.
I won't buy pot holders there again, no matter how cute they are :)

Not good that they melted, but better than catching on fire and flames shooting out of your hand. I think stuff like that to be considered fire retardent it is supposed to melt.

I have never had a oven mitt melt before when taking a cookie sheet out of the oven.

I have had one melt when I accidentally placed it on the eye and it was still hot.

Did you call the store you bought them from? That would be my first step and then the corporate office.

They weren't wet were they?

These were Dollar Store oven mitts for goodness sake....I'm glad your hand is ok but I'm sorry, but you get what you pay for.

I would never expect oven mitts from there to be any good.

I have bought lots of oven mitts from there over the years and all were good.

They carry the same stuff as Walmart, Target sometimes exactly the same.

Thank you for the concern.

I would never expect anything I bought at the Dollar Tree to be any good- thats why they sell it for !.00!

Well oven mitts aren't typically for "decoration" so if they sell them, even for a buck, they should serve their purpose. They should NOT melt when used nor should they allow your hand to get burned! Hopefully they pull those off their shelves. Thanks for the heads up!

You are welcome.

I see, so if something is a dollar then it is not supposed to work or be worth buying. Ok I will remember that when I buy my sunbeam compact fluorescents there and you buy yours where ever for 8x the price.

You know this thread was not made to start a debate about whether things at the dollar store are worth purchasing or any good. I started it to inform other DISers who may have purchased these potholders and oven mitts to be careful.

While I will agree with you that some things at dollar stores are just cheap junk others are exactly the same product you buy at other stores for hugh mark ups.

That is SCARY.... I hope you'll get in touch w/the Dollar Tree where you bought them as well as their corporate office. There's no way they should have melted like that! Thank goodness it wasn't one of your children helping you bake and using the pot holder!

I've purchased many great things at Dollar Tree but I'll know now NOT to buy their oven mits!

Thanks for posting this!!!

They actually sell many brand name items there that would cost you double or triple the price (or more) in a regular store.

Amen!! There have been plenty of stories in the news to prove that items purchased at the $ store are unsafe.

I honestly cannot imagine gving someone a "gift" from the $ store. If that's all you can spend then it's time to just write a nice card and call it done.

Glad you're Ok.

We can't all be fortunate enough to have many other options for gift giving. I sometimes like to give something other than a card and call it done and if the dollar store is my only option then so be it...I hope the receiver realizes that I would buy something more expensive if I could, but since I can't I hope they realize that it's the thought that counts and be appreciative of the effort and sacrifice even a gift from the dollar store can be.

For your information the pot holder was not the only gift. It was the pot holder, a spatula, a bag of Betty crocker cookie mix, a cookie cutter and a $10 Gift certificate to Target x 8 for the 8 teachers he has.

Maybe you should take the foot out of your mouth now or on second thought just leave it there and next time you should ask instead of assuming because we all know what assuming does.

It is the product that is inferior!!! No oven mitt be it $10.00 or $1.00 should melt!! That is the concern here!!
