WARNING!!! for anyone who bought Dollar Tree Pot holders and oven Mittsupdated

For your information the pot holder was not the only gift. It was the pot holder, a spatula, a bag of Betty crocker cookie mix, a cookie cutter and a $10 Gift certificate to Target x 8 for the 8 teachers he has.

Maybe you should take the foot out of your mouth now or on second thought just leave it there and next time you should ask instead of assuming because we all know what assuming does.

Foot not in mouth...I stand by my comments. There have been enough news reports about unsafe products at the dollar store to keep me from shopping there. I would never give someone a gift that had the potential of being unsafe.

I'm a teacher. A card is plenty. The giftcard alone is more than generous but unnecessary.

In my view, it's fine to shop at Dollar Tree for yourself but never a place that I would buy a gift.

We can't all be fortunate enough to have many other options for gift giving. I sometimes like to give something other than a card and call it done and if the dollar store is my only option then so be it...I hope the receiver realizes that I would buy something more expensive if I could, but since I can't I hope they realize that it's the thought that counts and be appreciative of the effort and sacrifice even a gift from the dollar store can be.

In my opinion, if a dollar is all you have to spend then a nice card is plenty. If you want the card and a token gift, then go with a soda or a 3 pack of Lindor truffles. Skip the dollar store - as this thread points out- you could save yourself the embarrassment of an unsafe gift.

What a thoughtful gift. Eight teachers?! Wow, I thought I had it bad with four. I'm glad that you weren't hurt.

Thank you for sharing your opinion but why keep baiting? Are you just trying to make OP feel worse than she probably does. You've said your piece, now, please get some holiday spirit and drop this line of comments. Thank you.

WoW! I'm glad you're not my child's teacher...unless of course the class you teach is snobbery and superciliousness...then you would probably get teacher of the year. Have a Merry Christmas and enjoy all of those cards you get!

I am so glad you didn't get injured. A burn injury is one of the most painful. I think it is very thoughtful of you to let everyone on the Dis and your family, friends and DS teachers know of the danger in using the defective potholders. I too buy a lot of things from Dollar Tree because they sell the same things I can get at Walmart or Target, but at a better price. I don't see paying $3.00 for an item I can pay $1.00 for. Now, with all of that being said, the price of an item does not indicate safety. Just ask all the people who drive a Toyota or a Lexus. Both of which are being recalled because of faulty gas pedals, Pirelli tires which are expensive tires or the Dorel Juvenile Group recalling Safety 1st, Cosco, Eddie Bauer and Disney branded infant car seats/carriers. The list could go on and on and on, but for the sake of time I will leave it there. I would never be so elitist that I would feel anything but gratefulness for ANY gift I received regardless of the price or where it came from. Just saying.

Very well said! OP, thank you for the warning and as a former pre-school teacher I must say that ANY gift is appreciated and yours seems especially generous and something I would have loved to receive.

Amen!! There have been plenty of stories in the news to prove that items purchased at the $ store are unsafe.

.

Yet I still see people buying toothpaste and other products like that in the Dollar Tree....I don't understand how they get away selling that stuff- even though it is a brand name it is not the same as the brand name they sell in the US-they were selling things that were not intended to be marketed in the US! Sure things like wrapping paper from there are fine (though its tissue paper thin)...I would never purchase any personal hygiene products or cleaning supplies or food from there! I got a plate of cookies from a driend for Christmas last year on a nice tray that looked like it was for cookies that she got from the dollar tree--on the bottom it stated in big letters "Not for use with food"....I guess something on that plate would leak into the food--its scary what they are permitted to sell.

LOL do you have any proof, of your claims. I have never had any problem with the Dollar Tree items I have bought. I have always bought toothpaste toothbrush dish soap. Many many times I'm still here kicking. It has to be the same stuff. DO you really think Crest or Cologate is going to allow anothe brand to use that name for free?

My BIL was a manager at Dollar Tree and they are regulated just as other stores are b/c they are a chain (cannot speak for the smaller independent dollar stores), but as far as food or anything consumeable it all has to be up to code and in date(not expired). Many times I have witnessed the Frito Lay or Pepsi/Coke reps actually in the store stocking the shelves with their product. The other products in the store are often the same as other brands but because of packaging changes or odd-lots that manufacturers have left they sell them to Dollar Tree at a great price. Things should not be dangerous that they sell, and they should give you a refund on your money.

Thank you for the warning!

(BTW a gift is just that, whether it is something that cost you nothing, or something that cost you thousands of dollars, it is the thought and caring that counts)

Geez people, why are you dumping on the OP? She wasn't asking your opinion, she wasn't asking you what, where or when she should buy for teachers or if she should buy things from a dollar store, she was trying to be nice and give a warning. If you didn't buy one and never intend to, simply close the thread.

popcorn::
really.. anything you buy in any store should meet US regs. I guess all the expensive toys that are contaminated are OK since they are at 'good' stores?
I learned a long time ago quality has nothing to do with price. You slap a designer tag on the same piece o' crap you can get at Walmart and charge 10 times for it.
I have found good quality at low prices and crappy quality at high prices..case in point, my DH is a vet tech and needs good solid work shoes (that don't leave marks)..so after years of buying Kmart/Walmart/Payless he used a gift card and got pricey Lugz and in about the same life wear time the sole completely cracked and split. You don't always get what you pay for.
I have bought oven mitts from Dollar Tree that are fine..I won't buy their towels becasue they don't absorb..it's a trial and error thing. Thanks to the OP for posting, and I hope you pursue this so they are recalled.

I have purchased many things at the Dollar Tree that have been wonderful!! I got some of the silicone spatulas to see if I would like them and really expected them to not last very long....I was wrong!! THese have been great to use when baking and scraping the bowl and I will be buying more.

OP...Thank you for the warning. I bought some oven mitts someplace(JCP I think) other than Dollar Tree a few years ago and they fell apart once I washed them one time. Just about everything I have purchased there has worked just fine. THANK YOU for the warning. I have not bought any of these bu now I know not to. My Dd is just beginning to learn to cook and she like to do things all be herself. I would feel horrible if she had these and burned herself.

Let us know if you hear back from the headquarters.

Just so everyone reading this thread knows, not speaking to the rude people who want to attack me for buying items at the dollar tree :sad2: and if they want to debate Dollar Store Purchasing start your own thread. This one is about a potholder warning.

The ADA seal is not required by law to be on toothpaste or any other dental product, it is a voluntary. The FDA approves toothpaste to be safe to use in the US market. So just because a product does not have a ADA seal does not necessarily make it a bad product it has either not been summitted to the ADA for approval or it has not completed the process. There are alot of good products on the market that are not ADA approved.

http://jada.ada.org/cgi/content/full/137/2/267

No toothpaste is safe to swallow. Fluoride is a poison in large quantities and is very unstable once added to toothpastes and rinses, what that means is, it starts to break down and loses it effectiveness so basically what the ADA does is test to make sure that the Fluoride is stable and will not lose it effectiveness in the product it puts it's seal on.

I am a dental hygienist by the way.

I do intend to take the potholders I have ( 3) back to Dollar Tree as well as call corporate to try and get them recalled. I will post Monday after I talk with DT Corporate as to what transpires.

Amen!! There have been plenty of stories in the news to prove that items purchased at the $ store are unsafe.

I honestly cannot imagine gving someone a "gift" from the $ store. If that's all you can spend then it's time to just write a nice card and call it done.

Glad you're Ok.

What a rude and nasty response.

ok, skimmed over the ot posts..

OP, please report this to cpsc. they are the ones that can issue a recall.

OP...thanks for the warning and I am glad you are okay!

I really cannot believe some of the posts in this thread....especially during the holiday season. If a store is selling a pot holder/oven mitt...regardless of the price...then it should do what a pot-holder is supposed to do...protect your hands from hot items. Then, putting the OP down for purchasing something from the Dollar Store and using it as part of a gift??? Really?? When the OP mentioned the mitt and giving some to teachers the first thing I thought was she made them some kind of gift package/basket with cooking items. I can't believe some of the things people are saying....and all because the OP is warning people not to use or buy pot holders/oven mitts from the Dollar Store. Really makes me sad.....

OP - thanks for the warning about the potholders, as I am sure many have been sold to unsuspecting consumers, not just as gifts. May I suggest you let your local television consumer reporter know of this problem, in addition to corporate offices.

The rest of this thread is just white noise. You don't need to defend yourself. Your post was a service to others.

Maddle
