Warning!Driving around the Contemporary with out of town plates?

In general a speeding ticket should not be issued for no less than 5 mph over the posted speed limit. Police are only trained to estimate speeds to be with in 5 mph of the actual speed. When a cop writes a speeding ticket he has to observe the vehicle traveling, he is supposed to then estimate the speed of the vehicle, then use the radar gun to confirm the actual speed of the vehicle and back up what he estimated. One or two mph over the limit is crazy to write. Any radar gun could be off by 1 or 2 mph. Here in NY the judge would throw it out. You have to go for at least 10 mph over or even 15.

good explanation, 10 is the golden ticket, as it were

most speed traps in tourist areas are widely known, AAA even marks them on their trip tixs. Speed traps typically involve a sudden, great drop in posted limit & are designed to pad the coffers vs efforts to save lives. I have no idea what the # of accidents are in the MK area of WDW, but at times the main road resembles the speedway.:sad2: It's good business to pull vehicles over for a friendly reminder of posted speed limit even if 'close' if only to remind those passing by to slow down!

shame on those big old bad policemen getting their jollies writing nuisance tickets:rolleyes:. If you get a chance, talk to somebody who works traffic duty in any capacity. Make sure to ask them what it's like to scrape somebody off the pavement who's been killed by a speeder...or knock on a door in the middle of the night to inform the family.

I was stopped for speeding by an Orange County sheriff at the MK/TTC parking lot just before entering the CM parking lot. Why was he there? Just got a warning though.

Not sure:confused3 maybe looking for speeders.

I agree, seen that a lot. Speed goes from 55 down to 30. And you better be doing 30 before you get to the sign that says 30mph. Once you pass it it's open season. You can't slow down after the sign.

I was doing 20 instead of 15. Is that really the best use of their time?

see post #41 above, if 100 vehicles pass you pulled over, that's hopefully 100 extra people who will think before they do speed in the area & will relate the story to another 100.

sorry, but if it saves even one life, what many think a dog & pony show is worth it imo

I do think there is a tendency for many to look down at their spedometer after they a) see the flashing lights & b) then, take their foot off the accelerator, which certainly lowers the number you see on the dash once you remember to look in all the commotion. Combined w/possibility of out-of-towners driving rental cars they're not familiar with or may not even be calibrated properly & excitement of getting to MK, it's likely to miscalculate rate of speed.

That is most likely their assignment for the day, write speeding tickets. For all we know he could be there on overtime just to write speeders. If I had to guess I would say most of the cops you see in Disney are on overtime, Disney footing the bill. But I could be wrong.

You are wrong. Orange County Sheriffs Dept. is contracted by WDW to provide traffic enforcement. The law officers are working on regular pay and assignment. Most officers give you 5 - 10 miles on the speed. You can state you were only driving 3 miles over and got a ticket, but I would tell you have your speedometer checked. There are enough drivers that go over the 15 mile speed limit that will keep the officers busy.

In most cases your speed is recorded before you see the officer. Which means the MK/TTC op probably was gunned going by the Contemporary.

Give me a break. The Sheriff's Deputies have a long reputation of nailing people for even 5 mph over in that area. If anyone wants to defend that as "saving lives" that is their perogative but its insane.

If your unhappy with their serivce let them know write them or call they will listen they always looking for ways to improve their service.

For thinking that giving tickets saves lives here what i have to say it my opion you don't have to agree with it.

Let say the police don't pull people over for speeding they can go as fast as they want fine. You go 50 in a 40 and crash your car at a higher speed and you get killed not talking about you. Now same thing with police giving tickets they pull you over and you don't crash and you are safe. I rather get pulled over so it saves lives. It might not prevent everyone from speeding but if it gets one person to slow down they did their job.

It sounds like your angry at them did they give you a ticket once or you have probelms with police. I guess i am insane for having an opion it is a free country and have state my opion if i want you dont have to agree or like it. I respect your opion you respect mine have a great night hope you go back to disney soon.

You are whacko bud. The Sheriff Dept in Orange county is about the best around. They don't have a reputation like that. If you are one of those that fly into Disney at 70 miles an hour during the day I guess you would probably get caught. There are a lot of Disney employees that don't know what the speed limit is and think they will not get a ticket.

I drive 25k miles a year. My entire life: zero speeding tickets, zero accidents. (Knock on wood.) So no, they didn't give me a ticket, and I've certainly never gotten pulled over at WDW.

I just get irritated because I grew up with a traffic engineer for a dad, so I know what safety REALLY is about. And it isn't pulling people over for driving 5 over. That is about revenue. And that makes me mad because it diverts resources from actual traffic enforcement that could save lives.

Its rare for speed to kill, unless it is excessive. It is almost always aggressive driving, or distracted driving, or drunk driving. An average, attentive driver who is driving, say, 5-10 mph over the speed limit poses absolutely no risk. Yet that is the driver that gets targeted by speed traps like this.

Your right sorry took it the wrong way in Disney it lost or distracted driver who crash more then speeders. I think it be better for them to focus on other area but they still have to be present to keep people from speeding. I think it be better for them to do dwi check points or seal belt checks. With Disney paying them to be out there the tickets help pay for the rest of orange county so the cops in Disney are basically free for orange county so they can have them at each park all the time. They should improve the roads like out in bus lanessigns further back. Sorry again I just misunder stood your post a little.

What do you mean by "contracted"? If there is a contract between two parties that generally means one is paying the other for some type of service.

2 miles over the speed limit is consider speeding which you can get a ticket for glad you didn't get one. .
However law enforcement officers should not get into he said she said nitpicking but instead should back down.

(For you physics Ph.D.'s) Some radar guns can be calibrated for shooting at an angle in which case they will compute a speed higher than the speed they measured. Depending on the road and where the officer is standing, cars going under the speed limit can be clocked as speeding. This is one way where doubt is introduced regarding the "accuracy of radar".

This can also result in the officer's reciting a speed higher than you think you were going. Only an astute lawyer can argue that the readings from such a radar gun have to be downrated by some percentage and in court he will quickly tell the judge a smaller number that is what the gun probably measured, not what it actually computed or actually displayed.

I am not saying the officer should stand their and argue with you if they say you was 2 miles over. And you say you wasn't just take the ticket and go to court most likely the officer won't show up. Plus mos police don't pull you over for 2 miles I am just saying you can be they might use it for something else like in sone state they have hands free laws but they can't pull you over for just that but can pull you over for going 2 miles over and then give you the 100 dollar ticket for hands free and give you a warning for the speeding. I sorry fir the gramer and LNG sentence so you don't have to write about my grammar.

If you don't go over the speed limit you will not get a ticket. This is magic that works not just at Disney, but I've tried it at home and it works.

Technically of course ANY speed over the posted limit is speeding.

But I'm in complete agreement with those who are saying 5 mph over isn't really speeding in any sense of the word and giving tickets for that accomplishes very little.

I got my one and only speeding ticket WAY back in 1966--going 37 in a 30 mile zone. Was going down a hill and DRIFTING faster than the posted limit. Still irritates me to this very day----the officer knew that you actually had to brake to keep from doing more than 30 and he was just waiting at the bottom of the hill. And was 37 reckless and out of control? Certainly not.
Look-I'm getting mad all over again. It was 44 years ago--maybe I should let it drop:)

I'm going to get flamed for this, but please, let's pay a little attention to punctuation and spelling. It would make both of these above posts much easier to read, and therefore, get either of these poster's points across.

I wasn't going to flame you, but I was going to chide you until the OP replied to your post. I have a good friend with ALS who uses voice to text software. It adds periods all the time whenever he pauses. The spelling is great, however, so he puts up with it. He calls it "pause for dramatic effect. "

It doesn't look like that's what it was in this case, but I thought I'd make you aware of situations like that.
