Warning! Be Careful!!

A while ago, there was a show on Dateline, 20/20, one of those shows, that said that almost all the major banks offering credit cards have stuck little "extras" in the fine print. One of those is that even if your payment is one day late, they can increase your rate substantially. :confused3 In addition, if you carry more than one card, your other card companies may also have the right to increase your interest rate because of a late payment on another account, even if your account with them has never had a late payment.

Because of the low interest rates and the 0% interest deals many of these copmanies use as a come on, the banks need to make up the income elsewhere.

A few other things the show pointed out:
1. In addition to increasing the interest rate, they will tack on a substantial late fee.
2. Credit card companies will now routinely approve charges which push a balance over the credit limit (where before they would deny the charge or increase the limit) in order to charge an additional "over the limit" fee.
3. One late payment, of even one day, can nullify any promotional interest rate and increase it to the maximum.
4. If a credit card bank determines that you are using too much credit, they have the right to increase your interest rate as well, because you are then considered a higher risk.

I know it's lousy, but it's the way it is.

We just pay off our balances in full each month, online, about a week ahead of the due date. It's not a bad idea to set up automatic payments of at least your minimum amount due, just in case something happens, you forget, time gets away, etc. At least that way, the bare minimum was paid and you won't be penalized for being late.

The best thing about doing it online is you can print out the confirmation which shows exactly when you made the payment. When you mail a payment, you have no proof that it was sent on time. And, it shows up as paid the next morning.

I hope this info is helpful.

I have run into problems with Chase in the past and cancelled my card with them. Now I only use my Disney Visa, but a friend with the same card (who has more outstanding credit) had a better interest rate than me. They gave me some grief when I called and said lower it, but they did it in the end. I have an automatic payment set up for this account and then pay extra in between as I see fit to keep it paid off (or at least pay it off every other month on high usage months). The auto payments keeps me from ever being "late".

Bank One securing the Disney partnership was a big shot in the arm for B1. Of course most of B1's credit card department is handled by what is left of their merger with First USA, who have never been known for being good to deal with. Any lender can make no other adjustments, access other fees, than what is outlined in the account terms disclosure (or as admended). Know the rules and follow them or expect to pay the price.

These things are not exclusive to any bank mentioned herein, take a look at some of the threads on this board http://creditboards.com/forums/

4. If a credit card bank determines that you are using too much credit, they have the right to increase your interest rate as well, because you are then considered a higher risk.

The above just happen to me. I have a Chase account and a Bank One, no new cards recently. Huntington Card (had for over a year) became Chase, now Bank One (over 5 years) will be Chase. Now they reviewed my credit report and says i am using to much of the creidt i was given by them. So interest on my Bank One went from 17% to 25% and min payment went from 2% to 2 1/2%. I have had balances on the Bank One for over a year at 3% interest.

I have never been late on any of my accounts.

I think this will happen more as Chase takes over various cards. So i decided to close my Huntington(Chase) account, and do like their name and Chase their customers away.

Jim.

I believe Discover Card has recently had a class action lawsuit filed/or may be settled already about posting payments 'late' even though the customer had sent them in soon enough to avoid this.

There is another class action lawsuit going about the outrageous 'fees and penalties' credit card companies are charging that are putting folks over their credit limit and then they really get nailed.

There is currently an investigation going on with these 'check cashing/payday loan companies and how they are raping the consumer.

I could go on and on and on about how insurance companies nowadays also check one's credit prior to issuing you your premiums-bad credit/high balances-you're a risk! Give me a break!

I learned my lesson-am currently debt free and plan on staying that way. I have an acct with a credit union and my credit card through them and couldn't be happier. Never have any issues. When I had credit cards with the companies mentioned in this post, had gone through the same troubles.

We have had a different issue with our Disney Bank One card. It has happened twice, once on a Disney Cruise and just this past week while we were at BCV. Disney called our home (luckily DD was home) and an automated voice said that they wanted to check some charges to our Disney visa. In the mean time, they were putting a hold on our account! Luckily DD called us right away (8AM) and we called Bank one to straighten it out. Yes we made the charges at a Disney facility and we understand it is for our protection, but what if DD wasn't home to relay the message to us. Our charging privilages would have been put on hold resulting in embarrasment. They have to do things in a better way. Next time I'm thinking of calling them before vacation and telling them we will be at WDW so don't put a hold on our card when we start to charge.

We had a similar issue but not at Disney. We used our Bank One Card at another theme park and made quite a few purchases in one day. The following day we tried to use the card only to find out they had put a hold on our card. And yes, we were in a very embarrassing situation trying to make a purchase and being told that our card was denied. When I called Bank One to ask about it they also told me that it was for our protection. Meanwhile, I feel they made us look like fools. You're right, there has to be a better way! :sad2:

I'm all for cardholder protection, but B1 doesn't communicate. I'm quite impressed that you rec'd that phone call, because twice in the past when we've had this "excess usage" problem we weren't notified. I've called B1 to advise of travel and unusual usage before traveling, didn't matter they blocked anyway.

those days are long gone, I'm afraid... and I've gone totally on line to pay - and even schedule the payments because i am SO DISORGANIZED that I missed payments more than once.

I use my amex almost exclusively now and am very happy. Capital One is a great card company to work with - they are not nearly as cut throat as the others.

Most credit card companies will freeze your accounts if you are using them some where out of the norm. We usually call ours, anytime we will be traveling, especially out of the country.

I stopped using my Bank One because unless I paid well ahead of time the payments were showing up one day or two days late if I paid by check.

These days I only use Sears MC because if I'm getting relatively close to the due date I can just walk into any Sears store and pay whatever I'm going to pay...these days I pay the balance.

I still have the Bank One and I'm considering finding out if I can switch it over to Disney but I highly dislike the notion of any form of automated payment that smacks of direct debit...mainly because if they are debiting you directly they can accidentally overdraw you. There just seem to be too many issues with it on these boards to bother with it.

Actually BankOne has one of the better online payment processes that I have used. You specify the amount that you want to pay and the date you want the payment to arrive. I schedule the payment as soon as my statement posts online weeks in advance of the due date. It is simple and there is no chance of long payment process times making you late.

I recently converted my Bank 1 visa to a Disney Visa. I've had the Bank 1 visa forever (it's the first account I got in my name, and I refuse to get rid of it, in case, God forbid, anything happened do DH, I would have some credit established in MY name). Customer service at Bank 1 was really helpful, and my new card reflects that I've been an account holder since, well, it's the correct year! I now carry two Disney Visas in my purse, one is DH & my joint account, the other is my new personnal account.

We have the day 1 Disney Visa and have never had any problems! We pay it off each month though! :Pinkbounc I've earned enough that we are thinking of another trip in the fall that will be almost paid in full! :Pinkbounc

I pay Disney Visa, in full every month, (my one and only credit card) the day BEFORE it is due, just to make sure!!!

In December of 2004 we had over $400 to spend on our WDW trip!

8 weeks from now I will probably have about $150. And will begive to start saving for our October trip!

I LOVE paying my bills online, for free (with my bank). Saves lots of money on stamps and having checks made.

The key to the whole system is to pay on time.
