Warning about Disney Gift cards

Just a little warning about Disney gift cards. I just used mine to pay for a Pirates and Pals cruise. This allowed me to get $30 in free gas

Now the warning. When I was placing my request the rep told me to keep the old cards because if we canceled they would place the cash back on the cards. For those of us planning to pay for our trip this way it is something to consider. Would you want your money back or would you just roll it over to another vacation? Just thought everyone should know to keep the cards just in case

Pirates and Pals is a Wishes cruise with the added bonus of Capt. Hook and other pirates. When you get ashore you get a photo with Peter Pan. We're going to the Pirates League in the Afternoon to get in the Pirate spirit then take the cruise that night and avoid the crowds and see the water parade from a different vantage point

This is the case with alot of gift cards. Especially the MC/Visa cards. When you return an item, most stores will give you the option of either their card (in essence keeping the $$$ in their store) or refunding it to the original gift card.

Ticketmaster gift cards work this way too.

I make a general practice to purchase anything that there's a possibility that I"ll be returning with a credit card rather than a gift. Returns of any kind are just generally more restrictive with a gift card. I don't want to be left with a gift card that I have to use at a specific place - I'd rather just have the credit back on our credit card that we use for regular monthly expenses.

The same is true for a Disney rewards card. You return an item you bought and they put it back on the rewards card.

How do you get the free gas?

Some grocery stores run promotions that if you spend a certain amount, you get money off at local gas stations. For example, in Mass if you spend a certain amount at Price Chopper, you can get a certain amount off each gallon of gas at a partnering gas station. People buy gift cards at the grocery store to boost the gas discount. Last week my mom had .60 off a gallon. If you know you have a major home project, you can buy a home depot card and get gas money off also.

I notice you live in Alabama. I don't know if any stores do the gas promo there.

Here in Pa and nearby Ohio Giant Eagle supermarkets when you buy gift cards they give you 10 to 20cents per gallon (up to 30 gallons) back at certain gas stations for every $50 spent in GC's and 10 cents for every $50 in groceries and medications.If we bought enough GC's to stay at the Poly again and it was at the 20 cent promo we will get more than $700 back. I do have to bring gas cans every time I fill up but I saved $1200 last year. Without paying for our vacation this way .
