Anyone tried it? Tips or suggestions?

A co-worker & I decided to chip in for a spiral ham for next week's office potluck lunch. I've always used Honey-Baked Ham's recommendations and served spiral ham at room temperature, but they're looking at me like I have two heads (maybe it's a southern thing to have it heated?) :rotfl:

So we're going with Sam's Club spiral that has oven instructions & glaze and I was *hoping* it could be reheated 4 hours on low in my slow cooker during the morning. Searching the web shows spiral hams + slow cooker = dried out, but they generally refer to longer times. (I've successfully baked uncut hams, but really prefer using a spiral in this instance for convenience.)

Anyhow, just wondered if anyone had experience they could pass on...

Thanks!

I'd like to know this too. I can't remember where I saw this but one recipe said to put it in heavy duty foil sealed up then put that entire thing in the crockpot. That kinda makes sense as it would help keep the moisture in and still allow it to heat up. Perhaps cook it on low the whole time and turn it to warm if it seems well heated.

Yes and its really good and easy. A friend and I were just discussing this.

Mix some brown sugar and orange juice, pour it over the ham and cook on high for about an hour to get the heat up then click it to low. This is for precooked ham. Otherwise, just leave it on high longer. Guaranteed great ham! :thumbsup2 (Some people use cloves. YACK! Not me. Some also use pineapple:scared: . So that is per your own taste.)

I have done it before by just wrapping it really well in foil and heating it on low.

Hey, I'm originally from Michigan so mom taught me to use Vernor's Ginger Ale for baking hams (none of that cloves & pineapple stuff)! ;) And yeah, my cooker has a metal insert with settings for frying/roasting, yet can be used as a slow cooker with warm, low & high settings.

I keep thinking if I seal it up tight with foil & stuff, I should be OK.

Sigh. I can just see me doing a "trial-run" this weekend and DH, me & our two cats will be eating ham for a month...:lmao:

I've done it in an electric roaster before. I used a turkey bag, butotherwise made it just like I would have if I'd done it in the oven. A can of pineapple slices with the slices stuck all over held in place by toothpicks. Then I mixed brown sugar in with the juice from the can and poured it over the whole thing. Remember to make the bag tight around the ham and secure with toothpicks so it doesn't touch the sides.

I did this the one Christmas we lived close to family. We had to be at my mom's almost an hour away for part of the morning before having a late lunch at our house with DH's extended family. So we weren't home to baste or check on it. Worked out well.

I am not sure about spiral hams but shank portion hams are Wonderful fixed in the crockpot we just put the ham in there with one cup of water or a bit more. but be careful if it is anything like the shank portion it will end up being shredded like BBQ. But thats how we like ours and it is the best ham ever shredded and all.:lovestruc

I am glad to see this thread. I was wondering if I could put a ham in the crock pot for Christmas Eve. Church is at 4 PM and we are having my MIL over for dinner. I was hoping to heat it in the crock while we are gone. It would make my life easier!

LAst year I put a spiral ham in the crockpot with some water. I put it on low for 4 or 5 hours and turned out awesome! I didn't use foil or anything. Just threw in the ham. I don't remember mixing anything into it. I am not much of a cook so I was really suprised it all turned out. :upsidedow

wrap the ham well in heavy duty foil and heat on low for 10 minutes per pound do not lift the lid during warming
