Wanyama Safari at AKL

I loved the safari. Loved it. It was my friend and I, and a couple, and it was a load of fun eating at Jiko (wondering if the previous poster will want to propose as part of a group dinner with the other guests? Because they don't seat you alone, you eat with the rest of the group.)

Should mention that kids must be at least 8 years old to do the Wanyama Safari, they don't take younger kids.

...wondering if the previous poster and his newly-minted fiancee will want to have a group dinner with everyone else right after getting engaged...

Well, at this moment, technically the dinner would come first, then the proposal, then the dessert. But I know what you mean. I am still playing around with ideas. Right now I know that I want to do it on the first night, somewhere on the AKL grounds. Just not 100% sure when or where.

I think after dinner you should go out to the outlook on over the Savannah, you could find a nice secluded spot and ask her there.

I changed it since you said you wanted to propose with dessert. But you'll still have the group with you and you all will be at the same table. Not sure how you or she would feel about that moment being carried out with a bunch of strangers at the table. Of course it will depend on how many guests besides the two of you are on the safari. I'd say after dinner take her to the outlook, or to the room in the lobby that has the balcony overlooking the savannah, or to Victoria Falls for a glass of champagne, and do it there.

This is a good thought. I wonder if I can work something out with IPO to set something up out there. I think I aught to ask. It would be somewhat disappointing to have them as a perk since we are staying CL and them not be able to help with the only request I have had with them. I am sure they have done it before.

The more I have thought about it over the past few months, the less I have liked the idea of doing it while on the safari for that reason of it being at a table with people we don't know. I was looking for some sort of thought to maybe, I don't know, re-inspire the safari idea, but now I think it is all but dead. I was also thinking of having our room decorated while we were on the tour and have them set up the ring in the glass slipper out on our balcony.

Ugh, so many ideas and not as much time as I used to have.

Thank you both for your input. I really do appreciate it. :worship::goodvibes

I like that idea! We did the safari in May of this year, and it was a fabulous event. It was myself, my DH and DD9. While my DH was a little hesitant to spend that much money, it became the highlight of his trip. He has developed a love for South African wine, and had a great time at the dinner (and I thought he would hate it, he keeps he doesn't want to do a cruise because he doesn't want to eat with strangers!)

That all being said, I would NOT consider it a romantic event. Having the room decorated while you are gone would be nice, or possibly have them set a small area at the Arusha Rock (it is a beautiful lookout) and take her out there after dinner. Maybe they could set something like that up for you. Good luck, and I hope she says yes! :goodvibes

yep - i'd agree that the safari is fun but not very romantic (and i know a lot of women who hate the idea of public proposals.)

do it later IMO...

Yeah, I've been convinced. I already have an e-mail out to IPO to see what sort of ideas they have. I was also thinking about seting up one of the photo packages around AKL and then proposing while we have our pictures taken. So many options.

Thank you all for your input and I am really sorry that the thread got so off track. :goodvibes

DH and I are surprising our 8 and 10 year-olds with a trip to Disney World at Christmas. Actually, the 8 year-old (boy) will turn 8 during our trip. He loves animals and I'm sure would love the Wanyama safari. I have made already made reservations for his 8th birthday for the Wanyama safari. (Wanted to do something special, and initially thought this sounded perfect.) I obviously can't talk to him about it since the whole trip is a surprise. But, he is a pretty picky eater. While the food and wine sounds awesome to DH and I (and I'm not worried about the 10 year-old daughter - she'll try anything), I'm nervous about our son's possible response to where he's going to eat for his birthday dinner. Am I worrying too much about this or should I cancel the reservation and take them on the Wanyama safari when they are both older? Any and all comments from those of you who've taken kids on this would be greatly appreciated! :confused3

We just did this safari. It was great. I highly recommend it. I have no kids but there were 3 kids at the safari with us 8, 10, and 12. The 12 year old pretty much ate all the adult food. They did (upon request) bring out salads for the kids and the mac and cheese by itself from the filet dish. I think they even had a filet piece without sauce. I highly recommend you keep the reservation and go. Just ask at dinner and the chef was very accommodating. He also gave the kids a different dessert that they liked better. Go you will all LOVE it.

When our children get older, we'll stay at AKL to try this safari -- hopefully they will still have it.

I'm sure they can bring out something more kid friendly. Maybe call ahead and ask? I think they brought out chicken fingers for one of the younger children when we did the Safari (back in 09).

I'm glad I found this thread. I've been trying to decide which tour to surprise my boyfriend with for Christmas this year and after booking a stay at AKV, I think I've found it!
