After seeing the posts how much everyone loves it I'm hoping to try it on our next trip. Can anyone tell me if it is the same at the Poly & the Rainforest Cafe at the AK? Where do you like to get your Tonga Toast fix?

You can get the Tonga Toast at Kona's restaurant at the Poly OR... Captain Cooks (which is also at the Poly) for HALF THE PRICE! LOL! It's GREAT!

The description of it at Rainforest does not sound like the Poly's version at all-they refer to it as "Baked cinnamon French toast with warm maple syrup surrounded by fresh strawberries and bananas and topped with walnuts."

At the Kona Cafe at the Polynesian Resort it's served with strawberry compote - no walnuts/no bananas surrounding it. The bananas are inside the toast, and I could swear it's fried, not baked, but might be wrong on that:confused3...and at the counter service there it's the same as upstairs, but no strawberry compote.

For what it's worth, we thought it was sickeningly sweet - literally. There were 3 of us -- could not finish one slice among the 3 of us, just too sweet. And that was without syrup, too.

Thanks for the replies :lovestruc Sounds like POLY is the place for Tonga Toast AND that it would be a good idea to share an order of it since it's so sweet

It is definitely NOT the same at Rainforest Cafe. We made that mistake on our first trip and went to RFC for breakfast. The Tonga Toast we got there was awful, soggy and tasting of custard. Completely different to the yumminess that is Tonga Toast at the Poly. I have got pictures of both on Photobucket but cannot access at work - I will post them later for comparison though.

Yes, it's fried. And it's amazing. IMO the strawberry compte somehow cuts the sweetness a bit and adds a refreshing taste. You'd think it would be sweeter somehow if you added that...

Definitely go straight to the source! Kona all the way!

That was our initial impression as well. Just too sweet, although we had smothered it with syrup. The next time we tried it we knew what to expect and somehow enjoyed it more.

In '08 we stayed at the Poly and on our last day we had breakfast at Kona Cafe and MAN it was awesome! My mom had the pineapple macadamia pancakes (deeeelicious) and I had the tonga toast (see below) and while it was definitely a lot of food, it was SO GOOD and well worth the try! They also have delicious mimosas. :worship: As far as I know, it is definitely not the same as Rainforest Cafe's.

Come on you guys from Nebraska, me and DW can each finish a Tonga Toast at Captain Cooks comes with bacon and 2 drinks for a CS. We usually go at least 2 times a week for this and sitting outside at Capt'n Cooks is like a tropical paridise. Now this is probably 2000 calories but so what it's vacation.

OMGosh, my mouth is watering looking at this picture - thxs for posting :goodvibes

Ah, yes, but we're from NEBRASKA...we eat STEAK with our bacon, sausage & ham for breakfast:rotfl::lmao::rotfl::lmao::rotfl:

Don't know what it was about that tonga toast, cuz ordinarily we love the sweets...love those Disney desserts! This just wasn't the right combo for us somehow. Saw someone saying they thought their brain just rejected the cooked, warm banana in the middle. Maybe that was our problem too:confused3
You can have ours from now on:banana:

If we're with a bunch, we get a few to share around the table. If just DH and I, we get one Tonga Toast, and 1 fruit plate and we share. Oh yes, I love the pressed coffee, had that for the first time in January! I also liked the toast (Don't remember it's name) they had in Boatwrights, and am sorry they don't serve breakfast any more.

Ooh, this thread made me want to try Tonga Toast so I just made an ADR for Oct. 18 for breakfast at Kona Cafe so we can try it. Can't wait! Now we'll be at the Poly the night before for O'Hana and then at Kona Cafe for breakfast. :cool1:

Thanks so much.

When we go with friends in Oct. I'd like to try it, BUT since we stay at Boardwalk, I'd like to go to the park first. Does anyone know how late they serve it, or if it's on a sort of brunch menu?

YUMO! At the top of my list of things to try!

I tried Tonga Toast a number of years back after the hype and I just thought it was very sweet and eww, very greasy...but it's been a while and the pictures make it look soooo good - maybe I had a one off bad one last time.

We have a breakfast booked at Kona again next trip, maybe I'll give it another go :)
