My DH have been talking about moving further south every year, especially in the winter. I ahet the cold, always have but he used to be okay with it. He has finally had it with the cold. There are problems wiht moving away someplace warmer though......

  • I have to/want to live within 2 hrs of the ocean, hate swimming in lakes and ponds
  • House has to be large enough to sleep 4 kids and us with at least 3 acres of land that has to be usable up to an acre and a half
  • We don't want too hot since I hate the heat
  • My DH would need a new job, which should be easier since he works in technology and already had links with a few different companies who have tried to lure him away from his current job
  • a small town would be nice, no big cities, great schools are a must also
  • very low crime rate also a must
  • within driving of a bigger city is a must (2-3 hrs is close enough)

Biggest problems is our DD's. Both are from our first marriages and my DD visits her father every other weekend and if we moved, that would not happen. (6 more yrs of this) His DD visits us every other weekend and that wouldn't happen either. (2 1/2 more yrs of this)

Selling our house may be a problem since it is so old but it is in a great location, good size, great town, and really good schools and neighbors.

We are not really picky, we know how to do home improvements but would like as few as possible. Nothing major, painting and things like that are easy fixes. has to be able to get DSL and we'll just move our Direct Tv service so no cable is an option.

I don't think any further south than South Caroline since we hope for not too cold nor too hot. A little snow is okay as long as you don't have weeks of below 0 weather and hopefully no weeks of above 100 either.

yes I know I'm picky but when you move your whole family from the only place they've know just cuz you want to, you can't afford not to be.

okay, now convince how we can do this and where we should move to. :hippie:

thanks !

IMHO, you ought to wait to make this move until all of the children from previous marriages are over 18. Doesn't seem fair to take the kids away from their dad, nor the dad away from his daughter. Just my opinion.

well it doesn't hurt to start narrowing down now. In 6 yrs my oldest DS will just be graduating 8th grade and the younger one will be in 6th grade. We won't be moving any time soon, as much as we would like to, because of the girls. We have 6 yrs to pick that perfect place.

We also have to finish some major improvements on our house before we can even put it on the market.

We love the RTP area of NC.

I agree. I wouldn't hear of taking a child away from a parent, nor leaving a child behind. Not fair to the kids OR the parents. Gut it out until the kids are grown, then high-tail it to North Carolina if you want.

Agree.

Job #1 - stay put until everyone who needs to spend time with a non-custodial parent is 18.

Job #2 - move to NC in 6 years!! It meets all your requirements, and it's a great place to live.

Edited to add: except for the heat. If you want to live that close to the beach (we don't call it the ocean!) you'll be hot in the summers. If you're willing to live closer to the western part of the state you'll drive farther to the beach in the summer but you'll be cooler in the summer.

Not for certain. I used to hate the summers in MA. Way too humid and hot. So our worry in moving to NC was that it would be extremely hot but that ended after the first summer. Now my wife and I joke that 90oF days (as opposed to 80oF) feel good. We adapted to the heat.

You can certainly adapt - or at least get to the point of tolerating - NC summer heat and humidity, but if you "hate being hot" like to OP does you won't ever be happy about it. It can be brutal in July and August. Of course most places in the United States in summer have their fair share of summer heat, so unless the OP wants a mountain climate she'll have some heat sometime.

Thanks for that! We recently visited the outskirts of Greensboro and loved it! This would be great with darling son having an interest in Architecture and Engineering.

That's very true. Our first summer in south FL was horrible. But after that it wasn't a problem at all. You really do adapt. You're right...90 degrees was nothing. And our first year we went swimming in the pool in February. After that, February seemed too cold for outdoor swimming. LOL! :teeth:
