I am just DYING to do 2 trips in 2010. I'd like to do a 7-8 day trip in late April or Early May and then another in mid August (maybe 6-7days).

My reasons are this would be the last year I would be able to go during the school months as I will hopefully be teaching in Sept 2010 and DD will be starting kindergarten in 2010. And our reasons for wanting to go in Aug. is because my aunt and uncle are going and they have 3 boys and we would like to do a family vacation.

We are 2 adults, 1 child....how can I make this work? What are the difference between APs and the No Expiration option? What would be best for me?

We also live in NJ so we would more than likely have to fly.

four major areas that will require some significant expenditures and are good for a little research; travel, lodging, food and tickets.

Tickets - if you're going for that amount of time an annual pass is your best option - at least for one of you. You could by a six day and seven day base ticket for about $20 less than an AP. Of course adding park hoppers to even one of those tickets makes the cost higher than the AP. I think that park hopping makes planning your touring so much easier that I wouldn't hesitate adding the few bucks per ticket.

You asked about the no expiration option. We do normally get this but we use our tickets over multiple years. I don't know if we will do it again though. Apparently people have actually been using the option as Disney has the raised the cost of this option faster than other options recently. We did add ten days of water park entries on this last set. This isn't a good option for you. A ten day pass with no expiration costs almost as much as an AP and the six day and seven tickets purchased separately.

Also APs come with some discounts http://allears.net/pl/discounts.htm

Sign up for mousesavers.com newsletter. They have a link in the newsletters that provides a small discount for Undercover Tourist tickets. We've used them the last two times and have had no issues. The savings from the link is not great but there is very little effort required.

Travel - Look early and monitor prices. There are websites out there that will monitor your flights for changes in cost. Some even have the fees for changing tickets built into their logic and won't alert you until the change is enough to offset the fee.

Lodging - there are places right outside the park that are cheaper to stay at. I prefer to stay at a Disney property for the convenience. Of course there are different levels of lodging. We have settled on a moderate - POFQ - as our normal resort. It seems to fit our needs and provides the best value to us.

When you go is very important. Next year resort rates drop (Value and Moderate) after 4/11 until early June and after 8/15. If you can work your dates around those you can save some money. The August rate change is larger than the April one. Also weekend nights cost more than weekday nights. There are sometimes AP discounts for room only or packages. The last couple of years the room ony discounts were announced in Feb for the April period and in June for the August period. http://www.mousesavers.com/roomrates2010.html

Food - other than lodging an area where you can have wide variety of expenditures. There are practical ways to keep food costs down. We usually snack in the morning - maybe some pastry from the resort food court - and have a couple of meals. TS breakfasts are cheaper than lunch or dinner. Timing your meal later in the breakfast or lunch service can help save money. There are many ways to save - or blow - money with dining at Disney.

Thank you so let me see if I understand what you are saying correctly about the APs
ok so let's say that I get us 7 day base tickets for our trip in May (does it matter if they are hoppers or not if I am just going to upgrade to APs?)...
Now, upon arrival I could upgrade those to APs correct?
And APs give me the park hopper option?
So how much of a difference would I have to pay per person upon arrival?

Did I get it right?

You wouldn't want to upgrade to an AP after you've already used MYW tickets! You wouldn't be saving ANY money!

Yes, you can hop with an AP... you can come and go as you please to any park all year long.

We had AP's for years. We would go in Jan. and July. Fo something like $500 a person, we would be set for tickets for the year.

We loved going to MK for popcorn and Wishes after dinner.

If we felt like having dinner in World Showcase, we would do that!

AP's are GREAT!!! :thumbsup2

some real numbers out there I looked up actual ticket prices. These are from Undercover Tourist (except the AP) but do not include the Mousesavers.com email discount. All are adult tickets.

Six Day Base 231.95
Seven Day Base 235.95

Total 467.90

Six Day Base with PH 285.95
Seven Day Base PH 291.95

Total 577.90

10 Day Non Expiring Base 461.95

Annual Pass 489.00

A couple of things are readily apparent. First, the 10 day non expiring is not a good deal since your days are spread over two trips. Second, the AP is absolutely a good idea if you plan to park hop.

For many discounted tickets, Disney will recognize the full value of the ticket after it has been used for at least one entry even if it w purchased at a discount price. If you try to upgrade before using the ticket they will calculate what you owe based on what you paid.

There is a sticky thread at the top of the Theme Parks section that was written by someone that works with ticket issues for Disney. It has multiple entries broken down by subject so you can read only the areas that pertain to your question. It is well worth a read.

I think the UT number I provided above for a six day base was only a $14 savings from list. You would need to order those tickets in advance, use them at least once and then go to a ticket booth at the parks and upgrade to the AP to save that $14. That's a call only you can make on how valuable your time is. And remember the upgrade has to happen within fourteen days of first usage.

Now something to consider is that you can buy an AP in advance but it doesn't start until it is first used. If you are staying onsite and a room only AP discount appears, The room savings could easily be greater than the ticket discount.

Listen to their advice...do the Annual Pass. Best deal for you on your tickets and yes, you may end up with a fabulous room only discount, too.

We love our annual passes. If you go the two times in 2010, you could also get in another trip before your year is up if you want to. There's something exciting about going that third time and getting in free. Then try to go during free dining and you just have to buy one day park pass, which you can upgrade to your next AP :rolleyes1. You can get great discounts on the resorts also. And if you drive, you get to park for free. There are other discounts with the AP also.

Hey there... when I know I'm going to do Disney more than twice in a year, I get the AP. For one thing, the room discounts are serious - when we went in February this year, we stayed @ POFQ for $84 a night.

Now, we are going back in Sept for F&WF @ Epcot, and did the free Dining Option (regular dining plan, not quick service - it was the first version offered). Yes, we are paying full price for the room, but two people in a room @ POP Sept 25-30 is $622, including taxes - that's $311 pp INCLUDING most of the food.

We've gotten good at watching airfare - using DING for Southwest, and regularly checking Airtran (these two have been the cheapest by far for us) - but I'm also signed up on many of the travel sites to make sure I'm maximizing my discounts.

For the Sept trip, I'm using credit I got on a DING rate from my Feb, making my airfare only $85 total pp. I have an AP, so that's a sunk cost... and we got Tables in Wonderland for the Feb trip, so anything that we end up doing OOP regarding dining will be 20% off.

OH - the room rate for Sept includes the one day tickets we had to get for free dining... totally worth it.
:)
