i have a website and have been using zenfolio for the past yr. as strictly a sales site(linked to my website, because i don't want to have to get ordered photos printed, shipped, paid for ect by myself) probably my biggest problem period is getting traffic to my site but that is another question for another time.
basically i made enough profit on my photos to pay for the pro site fee
but i've been reading a lot and it looks like that is more the norm, not really much volume in the way of online sales or "cold" type sales. one article said you are doing good to get one sale for every 3000 visits online. ( it was a photography article so guessing that might be different for other types of sales)most articles and forums i read talked about maybe a few a month or less( not sure what price point they were at but some were for sites that cost upwards of $300-600 per yr so guessing at least some of these were "photography heavy hitters" although some mentioned they sell for much less online, of the couple sites of the photographers i actually looked at, some were in the way under $50-100 per photo, some lots more, some didn't list prices which imo is never a good sign
) i'm not talking event type photography (ie weddings, baseball teams, senior pics), for that i am sure a site like smugmug or zen pays for itself.
i have been thinking of doing some actual local sales this yr ( ie there are a couple art festival stuff locally) but just wonder what others think or do who don't do senior/wedding type photo work( or do both)
i put some photos on imagekind.com where for free i can sell up to 24 photos( truthfully i think that is a pretty good sized portfolio and don't think i'd need much larger ) and am thinking of just linking that to my regular office live website. microsoft office live offers a shopping type site but again to me that sounds like a lot of work ie "headaches" and not sure i want to have to do all the ordering and stuff myself, well if there was a "lot" of it to do to begin with
i kind of wonder if i put more money into either advertising my site to get more traffic or doing more locally i wouldn't be spending my money more wisely
so what do you think. if you sell regular non event type photos how do you do it? what have you found works and doesn't? ( to me they are really different types of sales from something like events which is why i am asking about that in particular)
