Walt Disney To Expand Cellphone Service To Britain

LONDON (AP)--Walt Disney Co.'s (DIS) cellphone service, scheduled to launch inthe U.S. in June, will be extended to Britain this year, the company saidThursday.
The service, to be called Disney Mobile, will allow parents to controlspending, Internet access and text messaging on their children's phones.
Sandra van Vreedendaal, a spokeswoman for Walt Disney Internet Group, said thecompany is also considering launching phone services elsewhere in Europe and therest of the world.
Disney Mobile will be a so-called mobile virtual network operator, meaning itwill use the cellular networks of other companies. In the U.S., it is forming apartnership with Sprint Nextel Corp. (S); in Britain, with O2 PLC.
"Increasing numbers of parents are choosing to buy mobile phones for theirchildren as a way of keeping in touch and they are looking for a responsibleservice offering provided by a trusted brand," said Attila Gazdag, managingdirector, Walt Disney Internet Group Europe.
The company said handsets will have a sober design, with no Walt Disneycharacters as decoration. Disney ringtones and video clips would be includedwith the subscription package.
