Target helps the local community--each store location....you don't know what companies are doing. Local stores are wiped out at the moment--and how do we know that they didn't set up an employee disaster relief program internally? Not everyone announces their intentions.

And TA Daaaaa!

Target has announced a $1.5 million donation to the American Red Cross, with $500,000 going for immediate relief efforts for Hurricane Katrina, and an additional $1 million for ongoing disaster relief and preparedness.

In addition to cash contributions, Target is offering much-needed real estate in Louisiana to the Red Cross to establish a central command center supporting the most heavily impacted areas of the storm. Target is also looking into real estate availability in Alabama and Mississippi.

Target is coordinating large-scale distribution of essential products requested by the Red Cross, including such items as water, ice, energy bars and bug spray. Stores in the affected areas have been given additional funds to provide in-kind product donations and grants to local nonprofit organizations. Our teams also will provide volunteer support.

Nice to see Target has stepped up. I just spoke to stories I've heard in the past about their organization not willing to help charities. I'm glad they have!

Good for WalMart. I've driven by a few of their huge distribution centers traveling around the country & you'd have to think they could do so much so quickly. How about a convoy of WalMart trucks filled with water & food rolling up to the Convention Center & the Superdome!

And in Targets's defense - they do a lot for local schools. I was PTO treasurer for a couple of years & saw semi-annual checks for hundreds of dollars.

Thank God for WalMart! They are one of the most charitable companies out there.

Following President Bush’s announcement today that former Presidents Bush and Clinton will lead a nationwide fundraising effort to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, Wal-Mart President and CEO Lee Scott contacted President Clinton and the White House and committed $15 million from Wal-Mart to jump-start the effort. As part of this commitment, Wal-Mart will establish mini-Wal-Mart stores in areas impacted by the hurricane. Items such as clothing, diapers, baby wipes, food, formula, toothbrushes, bedding and water will be given out free of charge to those with a demonstrated need.

I don't always like some of the things Walmart does, but they DO do a lot of good.

Also remember, Target doesn't make NEAR as much money as Wal-Mart.

It's not that they don't help charities--they help at "home".
