Walmart dynamic pricing is coming. I called it. Seen a video on You Tube about it. Corporate greed at its finest.

They are going to replace the price tags on the shelves with digital pricing. It will take some time, but it's coming in the next few years. They will be able to change the pricing whenever they like. Most other stores will be doing the same.

Walmart confirms they are doing to digital price tags on the shelfs just like Department stores like Kohls use.
They add however, there will be no dynamic pricing.

If this is true, the trick, of course, is not to present it as “dynamic pricing” but as “special deals” or “flash sales” that can be instantly offered to customers via the digital price tags.

don't they already do this to an extent? the prepared foods in the deli area/coolers closest to the door at the ones around us charge a lower price for the breakfast foods once it hits around 10 a.m., prepared sandwiches and wraps are dropped in price around 1 p.m. but are back up to full price around 4 when the dinner crowd/those buying for lunch for the next day roll in.

OK. I think it will take a few years to happen. I surely hope it doesn't, but this company is now charging customers in some markets to use the self check outs.

Well, they have a time limit in common, but not on a hourly basis, right? They were talking about once a certain item was half way bought up, they could go in and raise the price immediately on what was left on the shelf. Think cranberry sauce at Thanksgiving maybe?

many states have 'price gouging' laws on the books for the purposes of disasters and emergencies and some DID prosecute offenders during the pandemic. there are a couple of states that are exploring regulating dynamic pricing but there appear to be no state laws anywhere that spell it out as illegal. where it CAN become illegal is if it involves price fixing, collusion, discrimination, or deceptive practices. so if the grocery stores in a given area get together and agree to all jack up the prices of certain items at certain times of the day/days of the week it would then be illegal.

And that's why it would be nearly impossible to implement. And there is a little thing called competition that will keep such nonsense in check.
