Walmart double charging!

I became a Nielson Homescan member at the beginning of this year. What that entails is me scanning in all of my purchases after I get home with a small hand held barcode scanner. What I've discovered is that well over 50% of the time I get home from Super Walmart they have charged me twice and even one time three times for the same item! I save my receipt and take it back with me the next time I shop, and they have always refunded my money, but I just can't imagine how many other people this is happening to who aren't noticing! And how long I was giving them extra money before I started Homescan! They must be making zillions on double charges alone! Watch your receipts carefully!

I check my receipt at all the grocery stores. It happens everywhere. One thing I like are the self checks, they take me a little longer, but I know what I scan. I also know if the bread gets crushed, it is MY fault, not the baggers. :)

I do like the self check out myself, but our new Walmart (opened just a few months ago) doesn't have any! :confused3 They have about 25 checkout lanes and about 4 cashiers :lmao: but no self checkout. Strange for a new store, but maybe they'll convert some?

I only shop at a couple of other grocery stores, but I have never had any double charges other than at Walmart :confused3 I am sure everyone makes mistakes, but when it happens sooooo often I begin to wonder...? And not just at the one store, we have 3 within about 10 miles and it has happened at all of them!

That is very good to know. I try to check all my receipts as I slowly stroll out of the store (and past customer service, how convenient!) but especially Walmart receipts because we live 90 minutes away, and it would be really inconvenient to have to return just for a few cents or even dollars. However, I am sure that I have probably overpaid a few times and not even known...... Oh well....

I check my receipt no matter where I go - not sure if this is really unique to Wal-Mart. I also make sure I'm in a position to watch them as they scan all my items and I try to keep a rough estimate of what I'm spending so I'll know if my total is off. Sometimes watching them scan everything isn't feasible (if I'm by myself or something) though.

I understand your experiences have been at Wal-Mart, but I've been gipped by several stores when I haven't paid attention. More often it is from a mis-marked item than being charged multiple times for something (in fact, that has NEVER happened to me).

Caveat emptor indeed!

That's the main reason I don't like to shop with the kids! I can watch the register much more easily when it's just me. Depending on how much stuff I have, I'll even choose a que that has a little bit of a line over an empty one so I can load up the belt before they start ringing. It does pay to watch! There have been times that I've seen mistakes after I got home and thought it was too late and didn't pursue it. Nice to know they'll reimburse you the next time you visit.

Can you tell us about Nielson Homescan? Sounds interesting! :)

That sounds interesting to me too. Please tell.

tngramma..Love the pic of your dog, my son just bought a new little chi-pin and it looks just like your little one.

We have a newer WM without self-checkouts. I was told there is too much theft via the self-checks. (people don't scan/pay for everything in their buggy).

I feel your pain. What's up with that? 27 checkouts and only 4 people working. Sheesh.

I did homescan for about a year. What a pain in the rear, and the "perks" weren't worth my time and trouble. I hope you're happier with it than I was. Some of the stores I used were not in their database, so I had to enter prices for a lot of things.

Our new WalMart is the same way! I don't get it. Maybe all those lanes are there for Black Friday or something? LOL. They're sure not there for normally crowded days, I know that. I was really disappointed that they put in no self checkout lanes.

As for double or overcharging, I've had the most trouble at Kmart. :headache:

I ALWAYS ask the cashiers to please wait until I get all of my stuff out of the cart onto the belt for this very reason. This way I can concentrate on the screen as they scan and not try to do that while I'm unloading my cart.

Yeah, I seem to have more trouble with this at our Super Walmart than anywhere else - not just double charging but other mistakes. The funniest was the time that my 2 oranges, at something like .39 each got rang up as 2 cantalopes at something like $3 each. I had both kids with me, was getting a big order and just didn't realize until I got home and looked at the receipt. When I took it back, the woman at the service desk got a good laugh too. :)

I also notice that I get charged a higher price than what is listed on the shelf at Walmart. It happens all the time and I have stopped shopping there for that reason. You get sick of telling the cashier of things being the wrong price and then they have to do the price check. The line behind grows really long.

I like our grocery store, the printed receipts puts your groceries in categories. I don't walk out of the store if I see a double. Plus my kids tell me all the time I should be on the Price is Right. For some reason I can rememer the price of any product. I wish I would of had that kind of recall memory in highschool.

I'm a pretty avid Super Wal-Mart shopper and have been lucky I guess to never have had any of the problems people mention. Now, ask me if they ever don't give me all of my bags or if I miss a grabbing a bag because the cashier has it facing her and YES -- that has happened to me more times than I can count. It's such a pain to get home and realize a few items are missing -- check my receipt to see that yes I was charged and then have to go back to the store to plead my case. Sometimes they look at me like I'm trying to get free food or something!

The last visit to the Wal Mart on 192 by Disney, 6 of the 13 items we bought scanned at the wrong price, plus they had 1 service desk person and a line with at least 20 people in it. We just ate the loss and walked out.

I have seen an increase of scanning not matching the shelf tags as prices are going up quicker than they can change the signs. I have had recent problems at both Kroger and Meijer.

They use to have signs at the walmart here saying if they charged you wrong they would give you 3.00 or if the item was under 3.00 they give it too you for free.

Do they still do this? I noticed our signs were taken down recently. It was like pulling teeth to get them to do it anyway. They always acted like they didn't know what you were talking about and would read the sign after it was pointed out and act VERY suprised.

Walmart has many issues, those that have been stated above, are but a few of them. I am always learning something new, about that company, and as it relates directly to the corporation, it is never good.
The area that I live in Ca. has Comcast t.v. cable, and on demand currently is airing a documentary regarding said company. It was produced in 2005, but the information is eye opening all the same, for when I believe that I have heard and have seen it all, as it applies to that companies procedures and policies, both written and hidden,I learn something new.
I have learned through several reports on t.v. regarding wm, and through other media avenues as well. I do not solely rely upon television of course, for information. Please look for that documentary on demand, or the like on your cable station, these various documentaries may very well be available as well on dvd, or vhs, in stores and in local libraries.
I do not shop at wm, I shop at Target. If wm was the only store in the world where one could buy milk and clothes, I would buy a cow, and learn to sew! and I ain't whistlin no dixie with those sentiments either!
I am never a fan of any company, that has tremendous grievances that are valid, held against it.
Before anyone decides to tell me to go to hell, keep in mind that I am not telling anyone, not to shop there, but rather, some of the reasons, why I never will,no matter how tempting those Halloween sales may be, either!
The Walton family is the richest family in the world, but how are their hard working, loyal workers doing in this country and in China? I know the answers! how about you?
